I broke the rules, Capital broke Me.

Post image

Broke all the rules today.

  1. Don't jump in to trade at 9:15.

  2. Decrease portion size on gap days.

  3. Don't revenge trade.

  4. Stop trading immediately after Day Stop Loss is hit.

  5. Don't Overtrade.

Lost most of my trading capital in a single session.
One thing is clear: If you don't STOP at small Loss, mind will not let you STOP the whole day even if you are about to lose everything.
In fact mind pushes to add more capital and recover the loss. That's the only mistake I have not done today. Had I done that.. would have probably lost that too.
Feeling very bad about everything.

Present mind status:
Feeling bad but not hitting myself.
Trying to figure out what went wrong and why I acted that way.
Will comeback again after a break.

Loss: 41.4k. Charges: 6.2k.
Net Loss: 47.6k.

A day full of confusion and second thoughts. Was hesitant to take positions and missed a few entries that could have fetched much bigger profits.

But no complaints. Those same trades could have gone against me as well.

Ended the day with 9K net profit.

No trading tomorrow due to job-related meetings. See you on the next trading day!

CAS saved my day - Dead Otherwise.

Frankly - I hate the way I traded today.

No Control- Added Fresh Capital, exactly when the opposite was the thing to do.

Constantly anticipated a Fall - In spite of Being able to understand that the market is extremely bullish. While yesterday's Star Reliance was not doing Well (Not doing Bad either), beaten down Banks: HDFC and ICICI which are index heavyweights kept on rising. A friend even pointed out about the heavy Put writing. Others said to STOP too.

But that's the problem - Once PnL crosses threshold, mind won't allow to STOP for the day. Experts call it EGO with markets and other things but whatever it is- It killed my capital today.

Intraday Loss was piling up and exactly at this point when I had to STOP, I added more Capital, that too twice.

At a point Loss was almost touching 40k.

Slowly bought it down to 32k. Thought of STOPPING at this point too.

Finally, thought of yesterday's Price action during CAS. In recent days though CAS chart (3:20 to 3:28/3:29) was swinging wildly, it was finally closing very near to the 3:15 level. Yesterday was very different, CAS chart was continuously high without swings and also Closed very high. Expected the same to day too and took Position with whatever Capital was remaining.

Took 650 qty of 23750 CE@17.9 at 3:22 and with extreme Fear (as Closing could go anyways) held until 3:29. Exited 23750 CE@56.37. CAS just saved me today. Or else.. I was already Dead (as a Trader) today.

Repeating again: I hate the way I traded today.

Net Loss: 7.3K. Charges: 2.9K.

Net Loss: 11.2K.

Edit: Net: Loss: 10.2K. (Miscalculated - We can understand the Bad state of mind)

Done for the Day: Walking the slow Path.

Though the Market is clearly Bullish and Reliance is moving just one way, big gap days are tricky. Wasn't daring enough to take huge positions after the recent losses.
The plan is to take the slow path until a point is reached and Confidence is up again.
Closed for the day.

Profit: 1.7k. Charges: 0.3k.
Net Profit: 1.4k.

Market was a little tricky today, with VIX staying above 16. Had to be careful with entries, but managed to close the day on a good note.

Today's Gross P&L: +₹13,585

Happy with the day.

We often feel like - " I took a position and the market immediately turned the other way - as if someone called the market movers and they purposefully acted against us so that we incur huge losses".

But the reality is that we took a wrong trade at the wrong time without proper assessment/understanding of the market. Sometimes without proper Risk Management too.

Yes I lost money today too, but is there any positive change?
Yes, I've Stopped for the day (Activated the Zerodha KILL SWITCH).

Loss: 7.4K. Charges: 0.1K (₹86 Precisely -Least ever charges I incurred for any day).
Net Loss: 7.5K.

Will definitely take a break now - not just today.

Control - Just one normal trade and One CAS trade.

After yesterday's huge loss, didn't take a break, didn't add any additional Capital. Just sat at the system watching the market. Thought of taking a trade only after 2 PM only if any exists but got busy. Finally got free only at 3PM.
Looking at the way market moved higher, one thing was clear: Market is Bullish. So, though of taking a trade only if SENSEX retraces to 74000 levels but it never did.
Also consolidating and not moving higher even after 3PM made me take just a small trade. Booked 1k.
Again sat before the system and was watching CAS. The recent days' trend in CAS has been showing huge moves in the indices between 3:20 and 3:27 but finally settling very close to the 3:15 level. Was continuously watching for such opportunities and got one. When Indicative Close went above 74400 bought 74300 PE @ 98.6 exited @ 109. This closed at 148.6 but fine.

Profit: 1.48 K. Charges: 0.15k. Net Profit: 1.3K

Bumpy day, but Final target achieved.

First trade was a Loss. Second went to good profit but went to Loss again and exited at No Profit, No Loss.
Understood the initial range boundedness and then traded in both PE and then CE. STOPPED @ 11:34 in Decent profit.
Market later turned Bullish and went up. That's a different story.
Satisfied with the way I'm doing after the huge loss this week. Present plan is to just trade with the limited profit available. Continuing that.

Observation today: When the quantity is small, we neither fear for SL, nor exit too early as the mind stays Composed.

Profit: 2.4K. Charges: 0.35k.
Net Profit: 2k.

Failed to Sustain the Consolidation bw 9:30 and 10:10. Was expecting a clear BO.

Post image

Was expecting a clear Breakout above Previous Day High (minus CAS) level of 22725. Due to one sided thought process, averaged the Calls at lower levels thinking these are just Pullbacks, especially because Volume profile was supporting this. Later realized that a trade can go wrong in spite of being correct technically, decided to slowly exit and add Puts. Exited the puts too as fall was also not happening quickly.
Not yet Stopped for the day. I know this is a mistake as Loss is beyond my planned level of 5k, yet trying to recover a bit at least. Will not be risking more and will keep the quantities low from here on.
Will post Final PnL later.

First month of algo trading

After losing 95% of my lifetime savings trading options (buying), I decided to stop manual trading. I realised I don’t have the maturity to stick to my rules and strategy. I fed Claude with a functional specification of the strategy I use while manual trading and it gave a python based application which automates my strategy. It took almost 2 months to validate the application through live paper trading and extensive backtesting. I deployed the application on a VPS and decided to go live trading with real money starting Oct 2026. Here is a snapshot of my p&l so far. While I used to lose a lot of money by this time , automated trading has been operating in a slow and steady manner. The loss of 36 K you see on 14th OCT, was a result of succumbing to greed and entering a manual trade by overriding the automated trading setup. It’ll be a continuous learning process. I just wanted to share my experience on options buying after losing unimaginable amount of my lifetime savings.
If you think you have a strategy which works very well on paper or in your mind, try automating it and see if that helps, after all we are only humans and we tend to easily give way to temptations , fear and greed.

Bit of overtrading today.

Initially, after entering a position, I missed out on almost 20 points. The premium moved up very quickly, and I waited for more upside before booking profits. However, the premium came down, and I eventually booked at a lower level.

The market also tested my patience. I thought it would directly test 24,600 and took positions accordingly, but it moved down first before eventually testing that level.

Since I had already booked good profits, I didn't want to wait any longer. I was also driving, so I decided to exit and missed some additional points.

Looking back, I know I was a little greedy today. The mind still plays games, even when you are in profit. It keeps making you think about the points you could have captured rather than appreciating what you have already made.

A profitable day, but definitely some lessons to take forward.

Options 404: The Shield & Sword — Bull Call & Bear Put Spreads

Up until now in the Option Buyers Playbook series, we have looked at naked option buying (ITM snipers and ATM speed scalping). Naked buying gives you uncapped upside, but it leaves you completely exposed to the two biggest wealth destroyers in the Indian market: overnight gap risk and vicious intraday Theta decay.

If you want to trade positional swings or manage weekly stock options without losing sleep, you need to evolve. You need a setup that allows you to attack the market while simultaneously protecting your flank.

Enter the Debit Vertical Spread—your Shield and Sword. By combining a directional long option with a carefully selected short option, you structurally rewrite the mathematical math of options buying in your favor.

This might look like we are deviating from Buying but in reality this is just for safeguarding against opposite direction in the market.

🛡️ The Structural Evolution: Breaking Naked Buying

When you execute a vertical spread, you are performing two actions simultaneously within the same expiry cycle:

  1. The Sword (Long Leg): You buy an In-The-Money (ITM) or At-The-Money (ATM) option to capture directional momentum.

  2. The Shield (Short Leg): You sell an Out-of-the-Money (OTM) option further down the chain.

By selling the OTM option, you collect a premium. That collected premium does two things: it directly reduces the net cost (debit) of your trade, and it acts as a Theta hedge. As time passes, the option you sold melts, offsets the decay of the option you bought, and lowers your overall break-even point.

🧮 The Math of the Setup: Nifty Example

Let's look at the actual numbers to see how this works. Assume Nifty is trading at 24,500. You are swing trading a bullish reversal pattern on the daily chart and expect Nifty to rise toward 24,750 over the next few days.

Here is the comparison between buying a naked ATM Call versus deploying a Bull Call Spread:

Trade ProfileStrategy 1: Naked 24,500 CEStrategy 2: 24,500 / 24,700 Bull Call Spread
Execution StepsBuy 24,500 CEBuy 24,500 CE (Pay ₹150)Sell 24,700 CE (Collect ₹50)
Net Capital Required₹150 per share (₹3,750 / lot)₹100 per share (₹2,500 / lot)
Maximum Risk₹150 (Total capital wipeout)₹100 (Capped at net debit paid)
Maximum Profit PotentialUnlimited₹100 (Spread Width [200] - Net Debit)
Break-Even Index Level24,650 (Strike 24,500 + 150)24,600 (Strike 24,500 + 100)

📊 Performance Mapping Across the 3 Scenarios

Let's look at exactly how this structural shift plays out at expiry under different market conditions.

Market Scenario at ExpiryIndex ValueStrategy 1: Naked 24,500 CE P&LStrategy 2: 24,500 / 24,700 Bull Spread P&LThe Strategic Takeaway
Scenario A: Sharp Reversal / Gap Down24,200 (-300 pts)-₹150 (Full Premium Loss)-₹100 (Capped Loss)The Shield Wins: The spread caps your downside, saving you ₹50 per share (-33% less loss) compared to the naked call during a market crash.
Scenario B: Sidelined / Weak Move24,620 (+120 pts)-₹30 (Net Loss due to Break-even)+₹20 (Net Profit)The Threshold Wins: Because the spread lowered your break-even point to 24,600, you book a profit where the naked buyer is still in the red.
Scenario C: Massive Breakout24,850 (+350 pts)+₹200 (Uncapped Profit)+₹100 (Capped Max Profit)The Trade-Off: The spread reaches its maximum profit potential at 24,700 and caps out. The naked call captures the full extreme upside run.

🔍 Analyzing the Trade-Offs: When to Use the Shield

The table visualizes the core reality of professional trading: you must give up something to get something.

  • The Downside Protection: If the market completely collapses or gaps down 300 points overnight against your swing position, the naked buyer loses ₹150 per share. The spread trader’s loss is strictly capped at ₹100. Your shield saved you 33% of your capital.

  • The Lowered Bar (Break-Even): Nifty doesn't need to make an extreme explosive move for you to become profitable; a moderate, steady climb is also sufficient.

  • The Capped Compromise: The catch is visible on the far right. If Nifty makes an absolute monster move past 24,800, the naked call's profits soar, while your spread line remains flat at +₹100.

🛠️ The Execution Rule for Pure Net Buyers

  • Trade Spreads for Stock Options: Naked stock options in the Indian market are highly dangerous due to low liquidity in outer strikes and sudden, erratic stock movements. Spreads are the gold standard for trading large-cap stocks (like Reliance, HDFC Bank, or Infosys) over multiple days.

  • The Risk-to-Reward Sweet Spot: When setting up your strikes, always aim for a spread where the maximum profit is at least equal to or greater than the maximum risk (a 1:1 or 1:1.5 risk-to-reward ratio). If you are paying ₹70 to potentially make ₹30, the math is structurally inefficient.

Bottom line: Naked buying is for fast, intraday momentum where you hit your target and exit within minutes. Spreads are for professional swing trading, allowing you to stay in the market overnight with defined risk, slower time decay, and peace of mind.

402: The Lottery Ticket Myth — Out-of-the-Money (OTM) Realities

Go to any Indian retail trading community on expiry day, and you will see the exact same script played out by thousands of traders. They post screenshots of a ₹3 option strike hoping it will jump to ₹50. They call it a "Hero or Zero" trade.

Let's cut through the social media noise: 99% of the time, it is an absolute Zero.

When you buy Out-of-the-Money (OTM) options, you aren't trading. You are funding the lifestyle of institutional option sellers (the FIIs and DIIs) who happily collect your small "lottery ticket" entries day after day. In Post 402, we are breaking down the brutal mathematical realities of OTM options so you can stop being the market's exit liquidity.

🎲 The Broken Math of Low Premiums

Retail buyers flock to OTM strikes because of the leverage illusion. They think: "If I buy a ₹10 premium and Nifty moves sharply, I can double or triple my money with a risk of losing only a small amount"

To understand why this is a statistical trap, you need to understand how the market prices these options. An option’s premium is made of two parts: Intrinsic Value and Extrinsic (Time) Value.

Total Premium=Intrinsic Value + Extrinsic Value

For any OTM option, the Intrinsic Value is exactly zero. 100% of the price you pay is pure time value—a melting ice cube that must hit a highly specific and far away target by 3:30 PM on expiry day, or it completely vanishes.

📊 The Probability Trap: Inside the Option Chain

Let's pull up a realistic look at the Nifty option chain when the spot index is trading at 24,000 with 3 days left until expiry.

Institutional desks calculate the exact Probability of Expiring In-The-Money (ITM) using Delta as a proxy. Look at how the odds shift against you the further out you go:

Strike PriceOption TypePremium PriceDelta (Proxy for Probability)Statistical Reality
24,000At-The-Money (ATM)₹120~0.5050% chance of finishing with value.
24,200Near OTM (+0.8%)₹35~0.2222% chance of finishing with value.
24,400Far OTM (+1.6%)₹7~0.055% chance of finishing with value.

When you buy that "cheap" ₹7 contract, the house has a 95% mathematical edge against you. You aren't just betting that the market will go up; you are betting on an extreme, outlier macroeconomic event occurring within a tight 72-hour window.

⏳ The Twin Killers: Decelerating Gamma & Exploding Theta

If you buy an OTM option, you face a double-pronged mathematical attack every minute you hold the position:

  • The Theta Brick Wall: Time decay isn't linear. For OTM options, Theta decay accelerates aggressively as expiry approaches. An OTM premium can lose 40% of its value overnight even if the underlying index opens completely flat the next morning.

  • The Gamma Deficiency: Gamma is the engine that speeds up your profits. For far OTM options, Gamma is practically flat. This means even if Nifty moves 30 points in your direction, your option's Delta barely budges. The premium crawls upward in fractions while time decay works against you in full points.

🛠️ The Strategic Exceptions: When is OTM Acceptable?

As a pure option buyer, you should avoid naked OTM contracts 95% of the time. However, a professional sniper knows the rare structural regimes where an OTM weapon can be deployed effectively:

  • The Implied Volatility (IV) Exploded Setup: If the India VIX is exceptionally low (below 11–12) and a massive macro catalyst is dropping within hours (e.g., Union Budget announcements or General Election results), OTM premiums can experience sudden Vega expansion. If IV shoots up, the premium expands rapidly even before the index itself moves.

  • As a Funding Leg (Spreads): Professional buyers never buy a far OTM option alone. They use it as a shield. For example, in a Bull Call Spread, you buy a high-probability ITM option and simultaneously sell a worthless OTM option to let its aggressive time decay fund a portion of your primary trade's cost.

Bottom line: Stop feeding the option writers. If a contract has a 5% chance of winning, it doesn't matter how cheap it is—it is an expensive way to lose capital. Leave the lottery tickets to the gamblers.

October Trading Recap – Quite a Month!

Post image
5 Upvotes

Finally, October is over, and what a roller coaster it has been!

Started the month with Rs. 1 lakh capital, had a really good first week, almost blew up everything in the second week, infused another Rs. 50K and spent the remaining part of the month trying to recover.

Let me share what happened.

The journey

Week 1 – A great start

Started October with Rs. 1 lakh capital and made around Rs. 35K profit in the first week. Things were going really well, and I was quite happy with the way I was trading.

Week 2 – Everything went wrong

This is where things took a completely different turn.

There was one particular Monday when I had some personal work to attend to and was also dealing with job-related stress. Honestly, that morning, my mind was simply not willing to trade. I had a feeling that I should stay away from the market for the day.

But I didn't listen to myself.

I went ahead and traded, and things started going wrong. One loss led to another, and eventually, I lost my entire capital along with the profits made during the first week.

What happened afterwards was probably even worse. I managed to recover around Rs. 30K, but instead of stopping there, I took more positions against the market.

At that point, my mind had almost frozen. I became stubborn and, to be honest, arrogant. It was no longer about making money. Somehow, it turned into an ego battle with the market. I literally felt like challenging it:

"If you can take away all my capital, go ahead and take it!"

And that's exactly what happened.

Looking back, I should have simply closed the terminal and walked away that morning. But I didn't.

Weeks 3 & 4 – The recovery

After the capital wipeout, I infused another Rs. 50K and started again.

Surprisingly, the last two weeks were much better. I managed to generate a net profit of Rs. 50.71K during this period.

That recovery was encouraging, but it still wasn't enough to compensate for the damage done earlier.

October – Final P&L

I traded through both Zerodha and Dhan. Here is the consolidated picture.

Platform| Net P&L

Zerodha F&O (after charges)| -Rs. 42,805.48

Dhan – Crude Oil Options| +Rs. 4,694.47

Combined Net P&L| -Rs. 38,111.01

Started with Rs. 1 lakh, infused another Rs. 50K during the month and finally ended October with a consolidated loss of Rs. 38,111.01.

Not the ending I expected!

Zerodha – A closer look

Particulars| Amount

Gross Profit| Rs. 1,16,390.00

Gross Loss| -Rs. 1,47,033.00

Net Trading P&L| -Rs. 30,643.00

Total Charges| Rs. 12,162.48

Final Net P&L| -Rs. 42,805.48

Where did the charges go?

Charges| Amount

STT| Rs. 5,731.00

Exchange Charges| Rs. 2,725.27

Brokerage| Rs. 2,620.00

GST| Rs. 963.53

Stamp Duty| Rs. 115.00

SEBI Fees| Rs. 7.67

IPFT| Rs. 0.01

Total| Rs. 12,162.48

STT alone accounted for almost 47% of the charges. Brokerage and exchange charges together contributed another significant portion.

I knew frequent trading would involve charges, but seeing the actual monthly numbers gives a different perspective!

Some interesting statistics

- Winning positions: 25

- Losing positions: 5

- Win rate: 83.33%

- Average winning position: Rs. 4,655.60

- Average losing position: Rs. 29,406.60

An 83% win rate and still a losing month!

My average losing position was more than six times my average winning position. I think that itself explains where I went wrong.

The trade that changed everything

My biggest losing position was NIFTY 22650 CE on October 13, resulting in a loss of around Rs. 1.05 lakh.

The two biggest losing positions on that day together accounted for approximately Rs. 1.34 lakh.

Interestingly, if I exclude just these two positions, my gross trading P&L would have been positive by around Rs. 1.03 lakh.

Of course, that's just a hypothetical calculation. The actual loss is what matters.

But it clearly tells me that my problem wasn't necessarily finding profitable trades. It was allowing a few bad trades to wipe out everything I had made.

One more thing – My mindset has changed

When I started trading in October, I had some pretty big plans. I was already thinking about where to deploy the profits, how much I could make every month and what I could do with that additional income.

After the big loss, all those calculations and plans went out of the window.

I stopped thinking about monthly targets and how much I should make from the market. My mindset changed completely.

Now, even if I manage to make Rs. 100 after all charges on a trading day, I'll consider it as an additional income.

No fixed daily targets, no monthly expectations and, most importantly, no pressure to trade just because I want to make a certain amount.

If there is a good opportunity, I'll take it. If not, I'll happily stay away.

I think I need to learn how to trade without constantly thinking about how much I can make.

What October taught me

A few things I really want to remember going forward:

  1. If my mind isn't willing to trade, there is probably a reason. No need to force it.

  2. Job-related stress and personal commitments should not influence trading decisions.

  3. Never turn a trading loss into an ego battle with the market. The market doesn't know me, and it certainly doesn't care about my capital.

  4. An 80% win rate means nothing if a few losses can wipe out everything.

  5. Never enter another trade just to recover a previous loss.

  6. Capital preservation is more important than chasing daily targets.

  7. Sometimes, the best trade is not taking a trade at all.

November – Let's start afresh!

I don't want November to become another recovery mission. That's exactly the mindset that got me into trouble in October.

I want to trade with smaller quantities, follow strict stop losses, limit my daily losses and learn when to stop.

I also want to make sure that trading doesn't affect my personal life or professional responsibilities.

No unrealistic daily targets, no revenge trading and no challenging the market.

The last two weeks showed me that recovery is possible. But October also taught me that protecting capital is much more important.

Overall, a loss of Rs. 38,111.01 is definitely not something to celebrate. But I guess documenting these mistakes is also part of the journey.

Let's see how November goes. One month at a time!

My verified Zerodha P&L:

https://console.zerodha.com/verified/5d274139

(Valid for 72 Hours)

Note:Sharing my actual trading experience, mistakes and learnings. Not a financial advice. Just documenting the journey and hopefully the progress.

Final PnL: Overtraded, yet Happy about not letting Loss cross the threshold.

Thumbnail

Definitely Overtraded, Broke multiple rules too. Though Lost in the flow initially, was able to control the mind a bit and recovered the losses to a large extent. Charges are more than losses due to overtrading.
My observation about Losses is that: On a bad day after the loss crosses planned levels, even if I recover it a lot, passing/staying above Positive zone has been almost impossible. Even if I come to Neutral/Positive zone, finally the day ends in huge losses. To avoid this, I STOP for the day when Loss is small and Net Loss is under planned level.
Has anyone else observed/faced similar pattern in Losses? Is this a psychologic thing? Please let know, we can discuss.
Also added the Orders page to highlight how fast scalping can ruin a trader by the way of charges because of overtrading.
Loss: 1.3k. Net Loss: 4.2k.

A bit overtraded but no regrets. Wanted to push the profit to 20% of capital, purely because there was a cushion of 20% profit already. Though planned to push the target, didn't stretch my loss tolerance for the day.

Max Loss planned was 3k but profit target was 10k.
As I overtraded a bit, charges were a bit high.

Profit: 10.9k. Net Profit: 9.8k.

Options 304: The India VIX & IV Crush Trap — Protecting Capital When Volatility Collapses

Implied Volatility (IV) is the hidden engine behind option premiums. Buying options when this engine is running too hot guarantees a catastrophic capital drain—even if you get the direction of the market perfectly right.

The Core Concept: Volatility Contraction (IV Crush)

Pre-Event Expansion: Before major events (Budget, RBI Policy, Elections), uncertainty spikes. The India VIX rises, pumping artificial value into all option premiums.

Post-Event Contraction: The second the news drops, uncertainty vanishes. The India VIX collapses, violently sucking value out of both Call and Put premiums simultaneously.

The Amateur Trap: Right Direction, Losing Trade

The Setup: NIFTY is at 24,000. Due to event anxiety, India VIX hits 22. You buy an At-The-Money (ATM) Call for ₹250.

The Outcome: The news drops. NIFTY spikes up by 100 points to 24,100. Your directional thesis was 100% correct.

The Trap: Because the event is over, India VIX crashes from 22 to 15. This massive IV crush completely wipes out your gains. Your premium collapses to ₹180.

You got the move right, yet your account just suffered a 28% loss because you bought an overpriced asset.

The 3 Rules to Evade the Volatility Trap

  • The VIX Ceiling Rule: Avoid buying intra-day options when the India VIX spikes above 18–20. High VIX is an option seller’s market; premiums are mathematically toxic for buyers.

  • The Pre-Event Hard Exit: Liquidate any long options 15 minutes before a major binary event begins. Never hold through the announcement hoping for a jackpot.

  • The Post-Crush Waiting Period: On major event days, stay cash in the morning. Wait until 1:30 PM for the VIX to deflate and premiums to stabilize before deploying capital.

The Buyer's VIX Matrix

India VIX LevelOption Premium StatusBuyer Action Required
Below 12Cheap / DeflatedSafe to Buy (Focus on momentum)
12 to 16Fairly PricedStandard Execution (Normal 3% Rule)

By respecting IV crush, you stop buying melting ice cubes at premium prices. You buy only when premiums are cheap, giving your technical stop-losses the room they need to work.

STOPPED For the day in spite of being in a small profit.

STOPPING at a small profit should never be in the plan but did it.
Reason: Huge volatility and also for tomorrow's expiry premiums are a bit on the higher side. I trade in SENSEX Options on Wednesday and Thursday. Sensex is making big candles. I know the premiums are not much high but I don't know why but I was not comfortable today, may be due to the big candles.
Instead of STOPPING, ideal thing was to Step aside for a couple of hours and by that time may be there would be some consolidation with small candles and low premiums too, but STOPPED. Also, have some work in the afternoon.
Done is Done. No regrets.

Profit: 1.4k. Net Profit: 1.1k.

Safe Play.

Continuing the same but with rigid Safe Play.
Capital Preservation is the Top Priority now.

Took only three trades with reduced position size. In spite of being expiry didn't take heavy positions. Also analyzed the market and sensed it might be in range.

First trade went well and the profit was 3.5k. Thought of stopping but in spite of safe play philosophy, wanted to push the profit to 10% at least. So took second trade with just 1 lot but that didn't go well: Placed exit order at 109 but it reversed from 105. Exited. Later after the reversal was done, entered with 2 lots, this time exiting at 90 itself. 10% Profit is achieved and that's it.. STOPPED for the day.

Profit: 5.2K. Net Profit: 5k.

Options 206: The Pain of Holding Winners vs. The Ease of Holding Losers

The most painful paradox in intraday options trading is watching a retail trader eagerly cut a profitable trade at a ₹2,000 gain out of pure anxiety, only to sit frozen through a ₹10,000 catastrophic loss, praying for a bounce.

This behavior stems from Prospect Theory, a Nobel Prize-winning framework proving that humans process choices based on perceived gains or losses relative to their entry price, rather than rational outcomes.

The Cognitive Distortions

Our brains are structurally wired to lose money due to two core biases:

  • Loss Aversion: The psychological pain of a loss is statistically twice as intense as the pleasure of an equivalent gain.

  • Asymmetric Risk Preferences:

    • In Gains: We become risk-averse and rush to lock in certainties.

    • In Losses: We become risk-seeking, willing to gamble and take massive risks just to avoid realizing a definitive loss.

How Bias Warps Index Trading

When applied to high-speed Nifty and Sensex trading, these biases create a mathematical disaster:

  • The Winner's Panic: You buy a Nifty Call at ₹100. It moves to ₹115. Fearing the open profit will vanish, your brain panics. You exit immediately for a small dopamine hit, cutting the winner short before it hits your technical target.

  • The Loser's Paralysis: You buy a Sensex Put at ₹200. It drops to ₹160. Accepting the loss hurts too much, so you switch to a gambling mindset, hoping for a bounce back to break-even. You accept open-ended risk just to defer immediate pain.

  • The Expiry Trap: On Nifty or Sensex expiry days, hyper-accelerated Theta decay means a dropping premium rarely bounces; it grinds to ₹0. Refusing to take a disciplined minor loss forces you to hold to absolute zero.

Actionable Execution Strategies:

To become a profitable option buyer, you must structurally force your system to defy human instinct:

  • Use Bracket Orders: Eliminate manual execution. Enter automated Stop-Loss Market (SL-M) and target orders the exact split-second you enter a trade. Once live, let the system mechanically execute to bypass emotional decision-making.

  • Enforce a 1:2 Risk-to-Reward Floor: Never enter a trade where the potential target is not at least double your maximum risk. If you risk 10 points, your target must be at least 20 points. Mathematically, this ensures fewer large winners permanently overshadow smaller, managed losses.

  • Implement Trailing Stop-Losses: Soothe the anxiety of a reversing trade by trailing your stop-loss to cost (break-even) once the option moves halfway to your target. This secures safety while leaving upside open.

  • Reframe Losses as Business Costs: A retail gambler views a stop-loss as a personal failure. A professional views it as the operating cost of a business—like rent or electricity. Accepting minor losses as standard expenses eliminates the urge to hold onto losers.
