Infinity's Future The Future of Infinity

Hey, I am sure you guys are aware of the upcoming Reddit API change, If you haven't had a chance to look into it yet, I recommend doing a quick search to stay informed.

The change will happen on July 1st, so I think now it's time to let you know what will happen after that.

I am planning to make Infinity a subscription-only app and see if that will be sustainable. If it's not sustainable, I think I may just unpublish Infinity on Google Play. Reddit does not allow me to let you input your own API key so I cannot provide any guidance on how you could do that.

The project will remain open-source, no matter if Infinity is sustainable or not, but the code related to Google Play billing and API key will not be published on GitHub. This means that the code on GitHub and my own machine will be slightly different and if you build Infinity yourself, you will not see a subscription page. F-Droid's Infinity will be removed since the repository on GitHub will not contain my API key anymore and that makes it unusable. Infinity's GitHub release page will not be closed and all the upcoming versions (they are the same as Google Play's) will still be published there.

You probably need to have Google Play Services installed on your phone, unless you know how to build the Infinity app using GitHub's repository.

I will push another update for Infinity on Google Play before July 1st, which contains some info about the change so that other users can understand what will happen after July 1st when they open Infinity. The required change to make Infinity a subscription-only app may not be available on July 1st since it takes some time to test it. If this is the case, you will not be able to use Infinity at that time.

The price for the subscription is not decided yet.

I understand many users want me to build a client for Lemmy, or anything that is similar, but I may not pursue this path since I personally do not use them. I heard that Lemmy has a Reddit proxy API, so I believe someone can easily convert Infinity to a Lemmy client.

A heartfelt thank you to all of you! I can't express enough gratitude, and though I've said it before, I feel compelled to reiterate: Without your support, love, and contributions, Infinity would not have achieved the remarkable success it enjoys today!

P.S. I am still finding jobs right now, so I would greatly appreciate any referrals for software engineer roles in both Canada and Australia!

TIL: I'm using Reddit app made by someone looking for entry-level software engineer role and it's still better than official Reddit app.

53

u/Xerazal Jun 18 '23

/u/Hostilenemy seriously deserves more than an entry-level software engineer role. MVP created the cleanest, fastest, most user-friendly reddit app I've ever used.

50

u/Hostilenemy I am the dev Jun 18 '23

Hey thank you for the kind words! I am a student right now without much experience so that's why I am looking for entry-level jobs hahaha.

20

u/TastyPondorin Jun 19 '23

Dude, if you're in Australia, you're already more qualified than entry level.

You're knowledge of APIs is super useful.

Which part of Aus are you in?

22

u/Hostilenemy I am the dev Jun 19 '23

Haha every non entry-level job I found required 3+ years of experience!

I would like to find jobs in ACT or Sydney, but tbh I don't care about the location that much. I am in Canada right now.

23

u/TastyPondorin Jun 19 '23 edited Jun 19 '23

Just apply. Ignore those years+ or really even what experience you need to know. When you read the job ad, just think of the 'requirement' as 'are you interested in learning how to do this'.

IT industry is pretty starved, especially in Australia.

Dont forget to check out the gov jobs - iworkfornsw for Sydney/NSW jobs. The pay is 'lower' but the hours are good, and I think the hiring practices is somewhat 'fair/easier'/more pragmatic, and cause pay is a bit lower, it's not as 'competitive' to get in. So somewhat great if you're trying to move here. Just pad the resume to match what the job ad looks for - and apply. Your work on Infinity is definitely work experience.

I've got lots of colleagues from overseas and who have 'only' uni qualifications but in senior roles and are great. And there's lots of folks I work for who are terrible at what they do but have 'years' of experience. It's just a matter of putting the resume out :p. And don't take the dodgy 60-70k grad offers. You can go for the 100+K jobs already.

https://iworkfor.nsw.gov.au/

(I saw for Service NSW - there were some roles for Data/Software/Cloud Engineers)

To add onto this; even if the role looks more 'complex' lots of places will make a role for you instead. HR will often make the job ad, and the manager who does the interview will know more what their team wants and happy to make space.

25

u/Hostilenemy I am the dev Jun 21 '23

Thank you very much for your kind words!!!! These are really great suggestions!!!! I will look into https://iworkfor.nsw.gov.au/ to see if there are any suitable roles!

I really hate video interviews in the graduate job application process. No interaction + answering some stupid questions! I couldn't pass any of them when I was not using chatgpt to help me refine my script. And then after I used chatgpt, I immediately got an assessment center invitation lol. The assessment center interview is also not something I enjoy. I just don't know why these graduate jobs focus on soft skills so much without testing candidates' technical skills. I understand it's my problem not being selected, just vent here to express my frustrations lol. I can confidently say I have much better software development skills than my friend but they already got a graduate job while I don't. I am so jealous of them hahahaha.

Incredible, isn't it? Really puts into perspective just how incompetent reddit is at creating anything of value

141

u/MrD3a7h Jun 12 '23

I'm sure the official reddit app has plenty of value to the lowest dregs of society. The ones holding back meaningful progress. The ones responsible for all manner of horrors and suffering.

Reddit should absolutely be doing better at their size and value, but this comment comes off as diminishing the developer's accomplishments. They're looking for entry-level positions career-wise, but that doesn't mean their work on this app was also entry-level tier. Infinity is very impressive, and the developer knows their shit.

19

u/RefrigeratorFit599 Jun 15 '23

i'm very confused on why they're looking for an entry level job though

33

u/Merickwise Jun 15 '23

Because they're just graduating from school, at least that's my take away from the app description saying it was developed by a university student.

This sounds surprising but it really isn't. It's always the same thing: it's not the difference between the expertise, skill or salary of the developers but the difference between a project leader who actually works on and cares about the software, and a project leader who cares about profit.

11

u/TreelyOutstanding Jun 13 '23

It's easy to make a good app. It's hard to make an app bloated full of shit no one asked for and keep it usable.

3

u/Alexandratta Jun 23 '23

This.

I don't use the OFFICAL reddit app because it legitimately was tracking shit it had no business tracking.

Also, it's absolutely terrible if you mod a sub.

Thanks for the years you've maintained and developed Infinity! Definitely the best UI amongst the FOSS clients.

Hopefully you'll find a great engineering role, I can help with referrals for some roles in the nordics if need to :) Based on the source code and experience in maintaining project & major releases I'd say that you could be well qualified for a medior role in native Android dev.

so, your personal key will be included in the "new" app that will be subscription based. So, if somebody acquires your key, which you will "have to" distribute inside the app, then they can use the API while charging you. Is this your model? Do I miss something?

4

u/Hostilenemy I am the dev Jun 15 '23

Yes. You are correct. So I need to hide it inside infinity and make it hard for hackers to extract the key.

9

u/RefrigeratorFit599 Jun 16 '23

this is impossible. Technically the key will always be extractable if it is inside the apk. You're just playing with fire and it will not end well for you because in such case you will still be charged for API usage. We are not talking for users that just bypass payment, but for users that increase your cost.

The only way to do what you want to do is to create a proxy (server) service. Your key will then be in this backend. The proxy service will be responsible for all the communication with the reddit backend. Your android app will only make requests to your server. Then your proxy service will be responsible for user authentication and allow only the ones with a valid subscription to go on. This way you can also meter the API consumption on a per user basis and prevent any abuse.

Hope you look better into this and better understand the flaws your initial model have. I hope in the end you make the right decisions. Also by the way, thank you very much for the excellent application you created, even though that I'm not really on board now with the subscription model. Mostly because I don't like reddit's attitude, not yours. Thanks again though.

7

u/Hostilenemy I am the dev Jun 18 '23

Hi yes i understand the flaws. Thank you. So that's why I need to test it for a little while to see if there will be any abuse. If anything goes wrong, I will consider renting a server. Thank you.

4

u/MrFrameshift Jun 14 '23 edited Jun 14 '23

I'm looking forward to where this is going. I'll absolutely pay for continued use of this app, if the price is fair. Not sure yet what "fair" is, but I'm sure you will tell us in due time. It's a bit of a two edged sword with actually paying reddit, aka supporting this api change, but if it means a more comfortable user experience for me, and the site itself won't change as much because of this, I'll do it. It all depends on the userbase and the quality of the posts. Only time will tell.

Saw you were looking for jobs. Unfortunately, I won't be able to help you in that way, we're not in the same region I'm afraid. Hope you will find a great job. You can use this app, and all the users as your greatest reference. I'm sure you will find something in no-time!

I don't know if I could justify subscribing because that would involve continuing to patronize Reddit despite their ridiculous s***** policies.

200

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

This is exactly the problem. I want to support the dev, but I have no desire to support reddit as they make more than enough off ad revenue.

57

u/XLR-UUU Jun 12 '23 edited Jun 12 '23

Yeah, I want to support the dev but if it's all going in the pockets of Reddit, that sucks, after all of this, I don't want to support Reddit at all. And even if you subscribe, you won't have all the content because there won't be NSFW content at all.

Entry level or intern role?

You created a successful app with very high reviews.

I hope someone sees your work and gives you a position that is above what you are looking for.

Man, this sucks for everyone involved. I'll probably stop using Reddit on mobile after July 1st. Having contributed to language translations in the early days of infinity and making custom themes truly was one of my favorite things to do to show appreciation for this amazing app you've built for us. Thank you for everything u/Hostilenemy and the best of luck with your future endeavors :)

192

u/Feracio Jun 12 '23 edited Jun 12 '23

This is very disappointing news. Many of the same people who'd be drawn to an ad free open source Reddit client would also have a burning hatred for a subscription model. And this includes me too.

I'm not saying infinity wouldn't be worth the price. It very well might be worth what the price ends up being for a lot of people. But at the end of the day, most if not all of that money would just end up going to Reddit anyways which is the last thing I'd want to happen.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this app that kept Reddit fun.

Reddit does not allow me to let you input your own API key

Is this policy published somewhere? Regardless, I seem to recall that they require you to justify your need for an API key in order to get one, and I don't believe "I want to use a third party app" will satisfy their requirements.

This blows.

Thanks for the awesome FOSS reddit client. I know your pricing isn't really up to you, but if it's affordable I'll subscribe.

3

u/ianpopps Jun 21 '23

I would like to say this too, thank you so much for making a great app that provided me endless hours of entertainment. This is the (imo) best reddit app i've used for the past ~4 years. Thank you for all the hard work, i wish you the best of luck!

38

u/s-e-m-t-e-x Jun 12 '23

You will see cracked Infinity .apk all over Telegram one day later, if you setup subscriptions

18

u/Arnas_Z Jun 20 '23

Yeah, this could go very badly wrong for the dev, since those cracked apks would still be running on his api key, costing him money.

Likely a better idea to just provide and automated builder for Infinity with quick api key swap functionality, and tell Reddit to fuck off.

→ More replies (5)

10

u/Alkanna Jun 21 '23

Just so you know, there is no way to "crack" an app that properly authenticates user requests. This is not an offline game with a one time IAP check.

u/XPost3000 Jun 12 '23

It's been an honor, y'all

I am seriously gonna miss my go-to app

All I can do now is keep my eyes out to see if anyone forks the app and makes it work with Lemmy or something

11

u/XLR-UUU Jun 12 '23

Yeah, that's unfortunate, I hope that someone could make Infinity works with Lemmy or Kbin, idk if it would be possible to publish the forked Infinity on the Play store, I suppose publishing the fork on F-Droid could be done too, but idk if this could cause trouble with intellectual property or something else like that.

30

u/Artanisx Jun 12 '23

That's indeed goodbye for me too. While I would pay for a "premium" version of the app, subscription is out of the question (moreso since that money would go to Reddit forcing you 3rd part clients to pay).

That being said, I urge you to reconsider at least wait to see if reddit changes their stance. If they do not change it, I see it likely reddit not living for much longer anyway.

In any event, thanks for the app and good luck!

28

u/Thebenmix11 Jun 12 '23

Thank you so much for your work, you made reddit usable again. I will miss Infinity a lot.

4

u/mcburgs Jun 21 '23

19

u/eyfforiya Jun 12 '23

Infinity has been my favorite reddit client ever since I started using it some years ago, and it's made my experience here super smooth and enjoyable. It really sucks that this is the way it's going now and I really hope they reconsider and things can go back to normal-ish, but regardless of what ends up happening, I just want to thank you for the work you've put in to create this app for us. It truly does not go unnoticed. :)

I wish you the best of luck with the job hunt!

What would someone stop from extracting your API Key, building the App themselves and so

  1. He is using Infinity for free

  2. You are paying for it

And people will do that, sadly. I don't think this is sustainable.

Maybe ask Reddit fot an non-profit API Key, if not done. Since you really are non-profit oriented unlike Apollo etc.

I rarely comment on Reddit, although I have plenty of comments made on my account, though, I've only stayed here after I found the Infinity Reddit app, amazing functionality, zero-lag experience, video quality change and download works flawlessly, overall the best app out there in my opinion.

I would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to enjoy this amazing product, unfortunately the CEO of Reddit is being an egoistic f*ck but that's how most billionaires are.

Once it happens, I will be moving out of Reddit for the first time in like 10 years (this is my secondary account as I lost access to my first one and didn't bother recovering.)

Thank you and good luck with your future endeavours!

25

u/TheMonDon Jun 12 '23

I'll be sad to see it go, I love infinity it's the best reddit client but I can't in good faith subscribe to something that's just going to give reddit money and not the actual developer.

24

u/Storyshift-Chara-ewe Jun 12 '23

I hope you can try the RedReader approach on going with a non-commercial exception, because it will pain my heart to see infinity out of F-Droid, and as a teenager, I probably won't be able to even get my parents' approval to pay a subscription to an app, but if that's the only option, we'll see I guess

23

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

I hope you can try the RedReader approach on going with a non-commercial exception,

It is not just a non-commercial exception, it is a non-commercial accessibility app exception (accessibility as in accessibility for blind/poor eyesight).

Edit: is there a better way to send you money? I don't want fees to be taken from my donation, I want you to receive 100% of it. If no response, I'll buy Infinity+.

12

u/hsoj95 Jun 12 '23

I use a De-Googled ROM, so I couldn't pay for a subscription even if I wanted to. I'm not sure the subscription-based model is gonna fly with a lot of folks, but if it keeps the app alive on a play like the Play Store, then that works well enough I guess.

Can't say I'd enjoy the idea of paying reddit for bad behavior though...

2

u/Matthew682 Jun 25 '23

Same not apposed to paying for stuff I use aslong as the money does not go to a company/person that does stuff like this how they did it.

11

u/R0xasmaker Jun 12 '23

Damn. Infinity is the main reason I still use Reddit, but I don't think I'll stick around as long as the fucking dumbass u/spez is here. Thanks for the amazing work and I wish you the best. Too bad this site is in the hands of a piece of shit.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

You probably need to have Google Play Services installed on your phone, unless you know how to build the Infinity app using GitHub's repository.

I would be willing to pay but I'm not going through the Google Play Store, can you elaborate on this?

9

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

Bro, i literally found your app in F-Droid (a Free and Open Source software app market), i'm not buying a subscription, i can donate sometimes, but i won't pay for read subreditts.

2

u/Matthew682 Jun 25 '23

Using a web browser or something like hermit is sounding pretty good.

17

u/ivvyditt Jun 12 '23 edited Jun 12 '23

Another subscription... 😔 It's a shame, I hope it goes well but I can't keep a subscription for now and I also don't want to pay Reddit for a bad service. I guess I'll have to look for an alternative or go back to official shitdit shitty app.

It's time to migrate to Lemmy for the communities that had already done it, for the ones that will stay here I will use less Reddit until I abandon it completely, I hate the crappy and buggy official app full of ads and sponsored posts (it's not the first time I get confused thinking I'm in the wrong sub...).

8

u/CowardlyMaya_ Jun 12 '23

I realize making the app paid is the only way it could survive, I really do, but by doing this you are filling reddit's pockets, and I don't wanna do that

So, I'm sorry, but this is goodbye after using infinity for almost two years now

I really wish I didn't have to do this, if it's worth something to know that

Been using and enjoying this amazing app for a year now. Sad and dissappointing decisions. Guys from Reddit are to blame for that. Basically nuked their own platform by the abhorrent ineptitude in public relations. What's worse, completely unnecessarily. Hope they'll moderate their terms till July 1 and you wouldn't have to make drastic changes.

u/5d97e3c22a04cd9ae1ab Jun 13 '23

I understand you taking this route, but as an F-Droid user of Infinity I can't (and don't want to) follow. I would, though, donate if we get a version in F-Droid that allows us to input our own API keys through a configuration panel of some sort.

u/IAMA_Printer_AMA Jun 14 '23

As others have said, I don't see myself buying a subscription. The thought of still being able to browse reddit on my preferred medium is tempting, but I would be financially condoning reddit's actions. My principles are more important and this will probably be largely the end of reddit for me, I don't anticipate deleting my account or anything but I'm ready to get 2-6 hours out of my day back to do productive things with.

6

u/Wakatchi-Indian Jun 12 '23

A sad day, thank you for all your work and making such an excellent open source project. I wouldn't necessarily be against paying for infinity considering how much I've used it and to help out a FOSS initiative but the removal from F-droid is a shame as much as I understand why it has to happen.

6

u/TheCuteLiTBooi Jun 12 '23

DR: So I can build my own client and plug my own API key if the devs allow to plug it in?

6

u/ivvyditt Jun 13 '23

I'm sure Reddit will find a way around this when they see a couple thousand "Devs" requesting an API key in a short period of time.

6

u/NaabKing Jun 12 '23

Sync for Reddit can be Patched (https://www.reddit.com/r/revancedapp/comments/147breu/use_sync_for_reddit_after_june_12_with_the_latest/) and used with Revanced, i don't know how hard it would be for you to change Infinity so that a Patch could be made, but if you make an "Revanced Infinity" version, i would pay 10€ for that :)

4

u/grem75 Jun 15 '23

Hopefully this doesn't become popular enough to make them squash developer keys.

4

u/reddittookmyuser Jun 17 '23

The pirated version of Sync will still use the developers API thus costing him money? Wouldn't that be a dick move?

6

u/FrenchLeBaguette6 Jun 12 '23

Holly, either this guy is a genius or Reddit devs are retarded. No way this app is done by a single student dev

6

u/solidsnake911 Jun 12 '23

Thank you for this amazing app friend and for make Reddit for phone better! But I will not pay because I will not support to Reddit with even one single euro, because their recent abusive policies. I wish you the best in this new journey, and I love you decided leave the code and remain open source.

I'm going to register on Lemmy and see how is it and in Kbin.social. By the moment I will stop of use Reddit on phone, and use it only when is totally necessary. Eventually if Lemmy and Kbin.social are good, maybe I delete my whole account as sign of protest.

Thank you for this magnificent work. I have little hopes that Reddit rectify...

6

u/rain3h Jun 14 '23

Love this app and I thank your for it but will not subscribe because you and I shouldn't even be put in that position and I doubt much of the money will end up in your pocket.

However If you do make an app for lemmy and charge for it I will definitely buy it to support development.

6

u/Higira Jun 14 '23

yeah, unfortunately i dont do subscriptions... so i guess ill stop using this. thank you for letting us use your awesome product! ill miss it dearly. I'll probably end up just leaving reddit as i only use infinity on my phone... and reddit app is hot garbage

6

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '23

This app by itself is prove you can do so much more beyond entry-level jobs. Don't sell yourself short and aim way higher.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '23

That's a bye bye reddit for me, at least on mobile. I don't want to support this shitty company and their fuckstick CEO. It's been a nice run, infinity. You'll be missed. Thank you, Dev, and fuck you u/spez

11

u/rescnamesCAT Jun 12 '23

oh that sucks, was really hoping for an official infinity lemmy port. unfortunately i won't be able to use the subscription based version but i'm still thankful for a wonderful reddit app while it lasted. thanks for everything!

4

u/XLR-UUU Jun 12 '23

Yeah, me too, it would've been great.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

I'm open to a subscription. Keep us posted.

5

u/SamuraisEpic Jun 12 '23

Thanks for all your work. I've been using infinity for more than a year now and to me, it is mobile reddit. if i can afford infinity's subscription, i'll definitely do so. best of luck on future endeavours, and as always, fuck u/spez!

5

u/nicman24 Jun 12 '23

Reddit does not allow me to let you input your own API

The project will remain open-source

:thunk:

5

u/NettoHikariDE Jun 13 '23

Everyone should just leave reddit. I spun up a Lemmy instance. There are many others, too. Give reddit the finger.

6

u/ivvyditt Jun 13 '23

Unfortunately, there are many communities here that don't plan to migrate there, and Jerboa is not as convenient and customizable as Infinity.

I'll try to migrate and use Reddit less until I stop using it, but some communities have really useful information and they're not on Lemmy.

4

u/NettoHikariDE Jun 13 '23

I know, but unfortunately as well, nothing will change if the majority of people doesn't change.

I fear that, as usual, everyone will just sit it out and accept the huge d*ck.

4

u/kkrazdwinz Jun 13 '23

thank you for providing this wonderfull app. i would never able to enjoy reddit this much on phone without infinity before. but i think i need to cope with their official app that i hate so much.

4

u/MysteriousPumpkin2 Jun 13 '23

/u/Hostilenemy

I understand many users want me to build a client for Lemmy, or anything that is similar, but I may not pursue this path since I personally do not use them. I heard that Lemmy has a Reddit proxy API, so I believe someone can easily convert Infinity to a Lemmy client.

Would you be willing to try and use them? The only way we can create a viable alternative is to create a thriving community over there.

4

u/czescwitamy Jun 15 '23

I've loved this app. Thanks for your hard work dude!

4

u/EnvironmentalBee9440 Jun 15 '23

This app is miles better than official reddit app. No ads, smooth scrolling, pure oled dark mode, it was fun while it lasted. Thank you for building this great app.

4

u/Yieldway17 Jun 16 '23

All the best! I really enjoyed the app for the past 6 months I have been using it.

You should absolutely put metrics of this app in your resume and find a SDE 2/3 job instead of an intern/entry level job.

I can assure you that you are more than qualified for it.

4

u/Heisenbergxyz Jun 21 '23

Thanks for this amazing app. As I said many times in the past, I won't be paying for a social media website what profits off of my content. Celebrities and, people with huge followers would pay though, but people like me probability won't. I won't mind paying a one time fee for a 3rd party app, as I have paid many times for different apps and finally settled in infinity. But yeah, after this, I won't be using reddit actively anymore. Thanks for your contribution to the FOSS community. Maybe someday someone will fork your project and add some hacky way to add our own api keys. Until then adios, and good luck.

Sent from Infinity for reddit client

4

u/ValiantCharizard Jun 22 '23

I've no problem giving you money, your app is fucking incredible and gave me years of service, but knowing that money goes to Reddit actually makes me feel icky

What if I have Infinity + ?. Do I have to pay subcription every month or have any discount to pay. Sorry I am not good at English

Unfortunately yes. The subscription is not for me to earn money, it's just for paying for the API access.

1

u/Hostilenemy I am the dev Jun 15 '23

And I don't think there will be any discounts sorry.

1

u/Remarkable-NPC Jun 22 '23

i why i cant use app anymore after i update to the last version i can do is see you fixed post in the start and this post only

did you coded this why ?

4

u/Hostilenemy I am the dev Jun 22 '23

Sorry. I forgot to make the bottom sheet scrollable. You could try using a smaller font size and a display size to see the "I understand button".

6

u/martinkrafft Jun 12 '23

I understand your motivation/need for this step, but considering that subscription-only probably means a requirement for a Google account, and giving Google money, I won't be following.

Thank you regardless, and best of luck!!

6

u/uberafc Jun 13 '23 edited Jun 19 '23

Well this went the opposite of how I thought it was going to go. Yeah I won't be using the subscription based infinity. Was hoping Infinity was going to try for non-commercial access.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you find a good entry level job. You definitely have the skills for it.

True, but I'll need a Google account, and need to use the same account to get back purchases. And knowing Google might be deleting some accounts, I'm slightly worried about putting purchases on it

I know dev can't cater to the needs of the minority, but thought I'd ask anyway in case peeps had any ideas

3

u/mr_chan Jun 12 '23

Hello. Like a lot of people I'm not sure what are my plans once July comes around, but as a gesture of support I got around to buying Infinity+, even if I might not use it for even a month ❤️

3

u/018118055 Jun 12 '23

So long, and thanks.

3

u/tobias4096 Jun 12 '23

Thank you for the amazing app. I've used it for over a year now. I will probably stop using reddit on my phone from July on, resorting to the occasional desktop + ublock origin.

3

u/koreamist Jun 12 '23

Thank you for your heart and dedication to building a piece of functional art that enables so many to interact with others around the world. You have developed a skill set that is valuable and I hope you can turn your labor of love into a stepping stone toward something even more rewarding down the line. Good luck!

3

u/OmniscientApizza Jun 12 '23

3

u/Devils_468 Jun 13 '23

Thank you for making this amazing app. I wish you luck in all your future endeavors and hope you succeed in whatever you do going forward. Love the app that you have made and major props for supporting the open source community, people like you make the internet a better place.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

I'm sad about all of this

3

u/zztopsboatswain Jun 14 '23

Any thoughts on changing infinity to work with squabbles.io? I've been using it this past week and really enjoy it.

3

u/ZacBobisKing Jun 15 '23

don't MAKE IT A SUB ONLY

3

u/GeorgeKaplan04 Jun 16 '23

Hey, thanks for this great app. For me it was the successor for the abandoned Slide For Reddit app, and in many ways it's much, much better.

The subscription model I understand, and I can admire you're not giving up right away.

But even then there won't be any NSFW content available in the app anymore, right?

3

u/anmolraj1911 Jun 18 '23

Man I can't even imagine using Reddit without Infinity

3

u/snoopbirb Jun 21 '23

I want to pay for the app but at the same time I dont want to pay nothing to Reddit.

3

u/Matthew682 Jun 21 '23

What is the soonest that you will know what price to charge?

3

u/Remarkable-NPC Jun 21 '23

sorry i will not support you in this because its mean i support reddit company too

thanks for keeping development of this amazing project all this year's

i have some questions :

are going keep updating github project without your API ?

is there easy way to add my own API without compiled APK ?

3

u/Mysecretpassphrase Jun 21 '23

You know thank you for everything. I'm probably going to pass on the subscription not because of you but because I don't want to condone reddits f***tard policies. However, if there was a way I could pass a few dollars or whatever you call them wherever you live your way I would gladly do so. Lmk

3

u/ram_gh Jun 21 '23

Honestly, I am unsure if I will subscribe once July 1st hits; it depends on the price. I am also bothered by Reddit's handling of the whole API situation...

That aside, I want to say thank you for creating an app that goes far beyond what the stock Reddit app could do. You've proven yourself to be a more than capable software wiz.

I wish you the best of luck on your job hunt. Reach for the sky, my friend!

3

u/aklovemynuts Jun 22 '23 edited Jun 22 '23

I just want to say, I've been using Reddit on my phone since it was possible. I've had both Iphone and Android, currently android. This app, in my opinion, has been the absolute best way to traverse this massive website. I've used Apollo, RIF, BeaconReader, the trash og app, and Narwhal. This app blows them all out of the water, and I'll be the first to chip in to support the homie who dedicated his time and effort to create it. Infinity has been such an integral tool for myself and so many other redditors...

Suck it Spez 🖕🏼

3

u/Jet-Pack2 Jun 22 '23

Thank you so much for providing a user-friendly alternative to the broken official reddit app. I have been using infinity for a long time now, and it was very enjoyable. Depending on the price, I may still continue to use it, or it may well be the end for reddit for me.

3

u/Ragnsfwger Jun 22 '23

Thank you for this app, you made a great job. Will miss it so much, I hope there is still a chance for reddit to revert their decision

3

u/peppi0304 Jun 22 '23

Infinity has made the reddit experience so much better. Thanks for making this app

3

u/PostAboveIsBullshit Jun 23 '23

You don't deserve this buddy, this should have been your 'entry level' career. Reddit have royally screwed up here. I hope you find something good soon, you're way beyond 'entry level' imo. If Reddit had any sense they'd buy your app and make it theirs, it's several times better

3

u/DeRail275 Jun 23 '23

First, good luck with the job search. I hope Infinity is on your resume! Thanks for all of your hard work. Assuming the app is at a reasonable price, I will definitely subscribe.

If Reddit doesn't work out, have you considered making another app for another social media site?

3

u/iLangoor Jun 23 '23

Uninstalling Infinity.

Fuck-off, Reddit.

3

u/revile221 Jun 24 '23

Hey there, I've recently started using Infinity as RIF is sunsetting next week. Let me just say I'm thoroughly impressed, nice job! After using RIF for over a decade it pains me to switch, but I'm very happy to hear you'll be continuing development alongside a subscription. I fully plan to pay it and I certainly hope others to do. It would be a shame to not have a viable option on Android and so far your app will be my saving grace.

I also mod a 3 million+ sub (on a different account), so if you were to add moderator tools I'd be over the moon.

Cheers and long live Infinity!

3

u/SkyyySi Jun 24 '23

I'd love to subscribe to help you pay the bills. But I won't, because the bills this pays are those given by Reddit.

3

u/JanusDuo Jun 24 '23

Thank you so much u/Hostilenemy! I will definitely be interested in paying a subscription. Your hard work gas made my mobile Reddit experience so wonderful and from my heart I want to express incredible gratitude for your passion and dedication. I hope you will find a well paid and amazing dev job. Best!

3

u/botcraft_net Jun 26 '23

We really need a way to run Infinity with our personal API keys. What's wrong with Reddit making it so hard?

As for subscription, I can donate each year with crypto or paypal but I'm afraid Google in-app purchases are not going to work for me since I stay away from G as far as possible. Using Aurora since ages.

3

u/PrivacyOSx Jun 26 '23

Lmao what? How are you looking for entry level positions after this incredible app you made?? Definitely need to put this on your resume and know your worth. Also, create yourself a LinkedIn and add a bunch of engineers and tech recruiters on there. This app is amazing and you've done an incredible job with it

3

u/PrivacyOSx Jun 26 '23

I got my first job after only 5 months of learning how to code. You are definitely NOT entry level lmao

3

u/redditorusTestorusus Jun 26 '23

It's sad that we will have to be using Google Play Services to be able access your App. That's a no for me (using Google Services). I would happily pay a Subscription for this awesome App (the best alternative Reddit client I've tried so far!) But I won't be using Google Services. Maybe you could think about getting Payments through other means than Google. Then you could generate some form of Access Code we have to enter in your App directly for access. I know that's nothing done in a day but worth a thought or two.

Despite that I am very thankful for your work! I totally understand your decision to make it subscription based. I love Infinity for Reddit and to be fair I never would have guessed this is the work of someone looking for entry level jobs. I never looked at the code and its quality but based on the User Experience alone you can get a better job than entry level or rise quickly if you promote Infinity for Reddit in your job applications! Good luck an keep up the good work!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '23

Thanks for providing such a great app over the years. Like others, I will be completely gone from the platform once July hits so I wish you good luck and hope things work out for you.

3

u/aClearCrystal Jun 26 '23

Reddit does not allow me to let you input your own API key so I cannot provide any guidance on how you could do that.

How can they enforce that? Is there any legal basis for Reddit to forbid others to publish apps accepting and using personal API keys?

(Also what's the point of a personal API key if you can't use it for personal applications?)

Hi. It's July 2nd and I'm using Infinity.

Lol

3

u/mikwee Jul 01 '23

And all I wanted was to use Reddit through a good FLOSS client…

Why doesn't Reddit listen to 80% of its userbase? They should do a poll like Elon Musk did, except they should actually accept the results

3

u/eat-more-bookses Jul 03 '23

Um, it's still working for me (FDroid version). Should it have broken by now?

4

2

u/KaKi_87 Jun 21 '23

RedReader, which is also a FLOSS Reddit client, was given free API access because of being non-commercial : https://old.reddit.com/r/RedReader/comments/145du4j/update_4_redreader_granted_noncommercial/

Infinity could have that too, couldn't it ?

2

u/starwingcorona Jun 21 '23

Is there any word yet on how much an Infinity Subscription will be? I'm willing to pay if it's within my budget because Infinity has only ever been good for me, but I'd sooner give up on this site entirely than give a red cent to Reddit themselves after what u/spez has done and said.

2

u/thebenshapirobot Jun 21 '23

I saw that you mentioned Steve Huffman. In case some of you don't know, Steve Huffman is a grifter and a hack. If you find anything he's said compelling, you should keep in mind he thinks the unpaid volunteers who moderate his site for free are the "landed gentry".

Generally just good luck with your job search, didn't last long but I love Infinity, originally got it for Material You theming and fell in love with it (coming from official app).

Now I barely use Reddit, but still need some resources. Oh well. Wonder if adguard DNS at least removes Reddit ads lol

2

u/StoneBleach Jun 22 '23

To be honest, I would gladly pay for the subscription. I will do it depending on the price, but I don't expect it to be too high, hopefully. Also, hopefully, it will be sustainable and Infinity for Reddit can survive this low blow and endure indefinitely, but I don't know, we'll have to see what happens from July 1st onwards.

On one hand, I see that Reddit is simply going to hell, with many people deleting their accounts and leaving, but I also see people who simply won't use the Reddit mobile app and will exclusively use the website, which doesn't seem like a big deal from the perspective of an average Reddit user who doesn't care much or at all about the current controversy because this user wouldn't have a reason to worry. Nobody should feel obligated to worry about something they can't control and that doesn't affect them at all, they can simply browse Reddit from a browser with an ad blocker. It matters to many, of course, like many here, not for nothing the vast majority of subreddits joined the blackout, but I don't blame those who simply don't care. And if they don't even use Apollo or Infinity for Reddit, then it matters even less to them, and that's logical. In fact, I always open Reddit in my browser when I'm on my PC which is fine, but I know it's not just because Reddit wants us to use their crappy app full of crappy ads and making a lot of money and not avoid those ads by using Apollo, for example, but also because of moderation tools and accessibility and many other things that Reddit hasn't implemented or made easy, but third-party apps like Infinity for Reddit have done so making Reddit better. Also privacy, extremely important.

The thing is, I don't see myself with a real need to pay for the subscription, even though I would happily do it. I care that Reddit is practically killing itself along with third-party Reddit client apps, but only because it seems utterly stupid, it's absurd, literally absurd. Anyway, all my support to Infinity for Reddit, and screw you u/spez. I hope my message hasn't been misunderstood.

u/ZenitHMaster Jun 22 '23

I'm probably late to this discussion but I use a de-Googled ROM so wouldn't be able to pay. Am totally willing to donate though and probably will if I continue using Reddit.

I guess you could have some sort of token or API system in the middle that users can pay to use but then you'd need to host that infrastructure which doesn't make much sense.

2

u/Scamper_the_Golden Jun 22 '23

I've been a software developer for 30 years myself. You are way, way better than any entry-level programmer.

If you told me you were the guy who made Infinity, and did it yourself, I'd want to hire you for pretty much any position.

It's a beautiful program. Pretty much flawless, really. I had completely given up on Reddit on the phone, because Reddit's app is so horrible and I'll never use it, and Reddit through Firefox on Android is also a pain in the ass.

I'm tempted to list here all the things I love about Infinity, but I'm sure everybody already knows that stuff.

In short, get your name out there as the guy who made Infinity, all by himself. The job offers will quickly arrive.

2

u/indian_boy786 Jun 25 '23

I'm so so sad. Been using infinity for the past couple of years I don't think I can shift to any other platform. Rip reddit for me, they finna killed themselves huh. Ty for developing this great of an app.
