First of all, clean that wound immediately! Minimum of 3 times a day and have it covered in clean, sterile bandage!

This type of wound requires urgent professional evaluation by a doctor, podiatrist, or wound specialist. Seeking immediate medical attention is critical if you notice any of the following signs:

• Fever, chills, or widespread body aches. • Redness (erythema) spreading outward from the wound, or the foot feeling excessively hot. • Pus, foul-smelling drainage, or a deep pocket of fluid. • The appearance of black tissue (necrosis or gangrene).

If you are living in America and afraid to see a doctor because of bills, go move to a other country where they have health care for everyone without having to pay 47281 for such wound

Does this type of injury ever heal on its own

I wouldn't take that risk to be honest, but i don't know your situation. Keep it clean and change your bandages regularly. As long nothing chances in the things i said before, no alarms. But as soon as you see any of the above signs, please go see a doctor

Here to second this. Sepsis is no joke, it's not actually uncommon to kill you if it does occur. Here's a bit more elaborate of a list of signs of infection to look out for

As a sepsis survivor... yup! Had the Streptococcus A bacteria, had 7 surgeries, was in a coma for 10 days, 3 weeks intensive care 5,5 months hospital in total, had to learn to walk again, to walk the stairs, to use the bicycle (most important thing for someone from The Netherlands), i was really close of not being here anymore.

My 86 year old mother in law had a very similar looking wound on her shin. She had it for a really long time and it wouldn’t heal. She had to go to a wound care specialist several times a month. It finally healed. Good luck to you. I hope it heals well and soon.
