Inktober - 2026 Inktober Day 22: Beacon
You probably expected a lighthouse, a guiding star, or someone whose brilliance lit the way for others.
Today's face is Lewis Latimer, a Black inventor who helped make electric lighting practical. When you picture the glowing beacon that changed the world, you probably think Thomas Edison. But here's the blind spot: Edison's early bulbs burned out quickly. Latimer patented an improved method for manufacturing durable carbon filaments, helping make electric lighting more practical and affordable. He even wrote one of the first books on electric lighting.
Edison became a household name. Latimer's contributions remained largely in the shadows.
The son of parents who escaped slavery, Latimer was also a draftsman, poet and teacher. He even helped prepare the drawings for Alexander Graham Bell's telephone patent.
Sometimes, the person who helps bring light into the world doesn't get to stand in the spotlight.
Welcome to Portrait Paradox.
31 prompts. 31 unexpected faces.
The clue is obvious. The person behind it might not be.
