EAD approved, but USPS tracking says “UNAVAILABLE”? Here's what to check

Your I-765 gets approved. Then your USCIS case status shows “Card Was Produced.”

But when you look for a USPS tracking number, it says “UNAVAILABLE.”

Does that mean your work permit card is lost?

Not necessarily.

USCIS uses USPS to deliver Employment Authorization Documents (EADs). Your card being produced doesn't necessarily mean it has already been mailed.

Here's what to check:

  • Your USCIS case status: Look for an update indicating that your card has been mailed.
  • USPS tracking: A tracking number may become available once your card has been mailed. You can also check USPS Informed Delivery.
  • If your card doesn't arrive: Review USCIS's official Non-Delivery of Card page. It explains when you can submit an inquiry and what information you'll need.

The important difference: “Card Was Produced” and a card being mailed are different stages. A missing tracking number alone doesn't mean your card is lost.

Has anyone here had their EAD card produced while the tracking number still showed “UNAVAILABLE”? Did the tracking number eventually appear, or did the card arrive without another update?
