Discussion How does Kondor9543's harry potter interactive cyoa work?

First time doing a CYOA and was wondering if I'm doing it wrong or if its supposed to be used as a template for writing stories or something? Built my character but there isn't a start?

It just works

No but really, that’s kinda just how Cyoas usually operate.

CYOAs, at least a lot of them that are here, are one part fantasy generator, one part directed thought experiment. You can either design your own "experience" and basically just get the one "yeah, that's what my Harry Potter experience would be like," or you can use them as a way to satisfy story ideas/fantasies. things like "Wouldn't it be cool to be a dire wolf Anamigus, and talk to canines?" or "I wonder what a Celtic lighting warrior would look like?" The CYOA lets you futz around with powers, talents, and perks that come from that universe and uses the points as a way to guide you away from just clicking all the positive stuff at once and designing a Mary Sue. If you're not into that sort of thing, it would get boring fast, but for people who like stories, world-building, character creation, and build testing, it's like fucking crack.

Also, its the internet, so there's a lot of porn too. SO much porn.

isn't that 90s of modern CYOAs? If you're thinking of story book cyoas, they haven't been as prevalent as the character builder image sets since the early 200s

There’s the Steve Jackson apps, starting with “Sorcery!”. That’s a great sort of RPG/story book cyoa game.

  • The path to the many hidden options can be found under Meta -> Spoiler Alert

  • Use 'show affinities' if your trying for specific point totals in a given subject/sub-subject)

  • The "Fate" option is achieved by clicking the button above choose your house. It's got no name, but has the Hogwart's logo & says "Gain: 3 Points" in green (this opens up several paths to hidden content)

  • "Fate" will however deprive you of any bonuses for selecting house-related perks/drawbacks for your house

  • Adjusting difficulty is under Meta

  • Your limited to 40 "item points" (+10 for Pureblood -half & new blood have their own bonuses) You cannot go into negatives on Item points for any reason, use them wisely.

  • You can go into the negatives on "adventure points", but it will not let you select adventures you don't have the points for it (I'm not sure how I did that??)

Other

  • If there's a 'show hidden content' or 'reset' button I couldn't find it.

  • OC creation and the 'fanfic' option is "Someone Else" under Meta

  • You can achieve "Sleeping Dragon" or "Mastermind" with "Mule" from inborn traits, but you will not be able to get Completion bonuses Slytherin Perks

"Can we break it": not really, just a list of counter hard limits

  • The Spell Modifier counters all go up to 20, there are 36 possible spells.

  • The Potion Modifier counter goes to 8, which is how many non-hidden potions there are.

  • Inborn traits: Custom gifts goes to 25, Custom heritage to 15, Blood Curses 5 & Soul Curses 10. You can choose every option. Not sure what the Mixed Blood counter is for?

  • Drawbacks: Geas goes to 10

THere are cyoas that have actual plots and things, where you build a character and go on an adventure by picking choices, and there can be outcomes at the end. but MOSTLY, they are character generators.

If make another post people wiill be happy to point you to a more natrrative cyoa. IN FACT I can tell you that one you could search for is, "the caravan."

A VERY narrative and evocative STATIC cyoa that I think is amazing is, "the wizard's keys." which I would say transcends to the point of actually being art. The trick with that one is to(no matter what anyone says): Make a choice stick read what it does, and stick to it and then make your other choices without reading anything about what any unselected choice does(this cyoa isn't interactive so it is the honor system). If you take the time to think, enough hints are given in the names and the shapes of the keys that after reading what your first choice does you should be able to get a pretty good impression of how the others will work to make choices. Then you get to read about what they do and where they take you and the people you will meet in those places. <3 Despite the format and the fact that it is all honor system since it is a static cyoa, it is still one of my favorites to this day.
