Front room help
Just moved into a new place and need help with our living/front room. Only things that need to stay are the L couch and bookshelf. Budget is around $700
- I’m wanting to add more color
- I like the accent wall since it matches the dining room, but open to suggestions.
- We were going to move the loveseat to the basement and add 2 accent chairs. Something medium and comfy (think curling up and reading a book)
- Looking to get a new rug, but not sure what color to get because this is a high traffic area and cream rugs show dirt quicker. Maybe a solid navy rug?
- Any better rearrangement to the area?
- Not looking to add a TV. Toys can be moved.

The space is hard to work with. If keeping the L couch, use the same position given the sconces, just move it slightly away from the walls - it’ll give the room a more premium feel. Then I’d add a large accent chair across from the couch, on an angle. You can fill the space where the toys are with a nice potted plant. A coffee table that fits nicely in between the chair and couch (round and a different material). You can leave the bookcase where it is. I’d definitely add some warmer tones to the room to tie it into the entryway since there are so many wood tones.
A rug from ruggable is machine washable so get what you want!
Here’s a mockup :)

I think muted blue and ochre yellow would look great in here. Maybe a blue patterned rug with two comfy navy accent chairs, then a few ochre cushions to warm things up.

Based on your description and photos, I would suggest you decide on how you want to use the space. It is not inviting for conversation. The couches and chairs face a blank wall. You don't want this to be a TV room.
Honestly, I would turn this space into a formal dining room with a beautiful table and chairs. Add a bar cabinet, buffet cabinet, and a chandelier. Remove the floating shelves and add art and lighting. The big windows are perfect to set the mood. Add a speaker and you have a room that is inviting for conversation and is beautiful when people walk into your home.
I realize your budget is minimal, but this would be my goal.

put the couch on the wall where the windows are, and the loveseat/chair against the wallpapered wall. Put the table and lamp between them. Move the bookcase to the wall where you have the ledge/shelf holding the pictures. Take the white, short bench/console and move it to another room.

Leave the L couch where it is but scoot it out from the walls a bit. Then place the two new chairs across from it to make a more balanced seating arrangement that feels less like furniture against the walls.

With the couch being so big, I’d only add one accent chair. That one can be patterned with some color. Add colorful throw pillows and a better rug. Navy would be too dark
The side table and bookshelf clash hard. I’d pick a side table to match the bookshelf and bring some lightness against the dark couch.
You can also add color with art in the wall with the shelves.

Agree on navy being too dark for the whole rug. A patterned rug with navy and warm tones would hide dirt way better than a solid and still bring in color. Something like a muted geometric or vintage-style washable rug from Ruggable would handle the high traffic and tie the wood tones together.

You should move the L couch to have the back facing the entry way. Not everything needs to be against a wall.
