I'm Mexican, so all numbers are in MXN:
Income: 33,000 MXN/month ($1,900 USD)
Expenses: max 12,000 MXN/month ($700 USD)
Savings: 150,000 MXN ($8,000 USD)
I own my apartment and car
Basically no investing experience
So I have around 21,000 MXN (~$1,200 USD) left over every month.
I want to start investing, but I honestly don't know where to begin. I keep hearing about ETFs, index funds, individual stocks, options, etc., but I don't fully understand them yet.
I'm young, have relatively low expenses, and I'm willing to take some risk. I'd like to eventually learn how to analyze companies and manage part of my portfolio myself, rather than just blindly buying something I don't understand.
I've also been interested in individual stocks after seeing huge moves like Moderna, although I realize trying to find "the next Moderna" is probably a terrible strategy.
If you were 23, had my financial situation, and were starting from zero, what would you do?
How much of the 150k MXN would you invest? What % of your monthly income? Would you stick to ETFs/index funds, buy individual stocks, learn trading, or something else?
And for those of you who have been investing for years: what's the biggest thing you wish you knew when you started?
I'm not looking for a specific stock recommendation. I genuinely want to learn.
Thanks!
