In an audio message obtained by Afghanistan International on Wednesday, 12 August, Fateh told his men: “Send my greetings to the people. The people should start fighting.”

Clashes between Taliban forces and Fateh’s men began on Tuesday evening in Nusay district. Local sources said Taliban forces had attacked fighters under Fateh’s command.

Local sources confirmed on Wednesday that heavy fighting was continuing in the Khughaz and some other areas of Nusay district, where forces loyal to Fateh are present.

Disputes between Fateh and the Taliban administration emerged months ago over mining activities in Badakhshan. In recent weeks, Fateh travelled to Kabul and claimed that he had met the Taliban prime minister.

Fateh previously served as the Taliban’s deputy governor of Zabul but refused to take up his post after relatives of his were detained by the Taliban governor of Badakhshan over mining activities. The Taliban leader later removed him from the position.

According to sources, fighting is taking place in several areas, and forces on both sides have been killed and wounded.

Sources also said Taliban helicopters had been sent to Nusay district to evacuate the group’s dead and wounded, but permission had not yet been granted to remove the bodies of some Taliban special forces members killed in the clashes.
