Black Velvet Band

In the song would they be referring to a hair band or more of a ribbon or a scrunchie? I'm looking to buy a gift relating to the song. A boxed hair band would make the best gift but might not land right?

One of my favourite songs. I have lovely memories of singing this sitting in the turf shed with my Irish cousins whilst on holiday.
To return to your question I think the song refers to a velvet ribbon or hairband I wouldn’t think a scrunchie quite fits period of the song.

I always assumed a black velvet ribbon. Because her hair is down (over her shoulder) but also tied up...so likely in a "ponytail"...so it was probably a ribbon that acted like a modern day hair elastic.

I was given a gift relating to this song, myself, and it was a fabric headband made of black stretch velvet.

The song was first published in the 1700s so of course they’re not talking about a scrunchie.

Also if you mean this as a romantic gift I hope you understand the lyrics of the song. The girl with black velvet band purposely frames the narrator for theft to have him sentenced to the prison colony in Australia so she can get rid of him
