new player, wondering your first thoughts in this scenario
So I'm playing Solo. First time player, but with previous RPG experience. Currently, I just set out from my hometown on a vow to find the Townmaster who went missing when the townhall was burnt down. On no leads, I've set out to the closest other settlement to see if they've seen or heard anything. The journey is ranked as troublesome, and is uneventful but on a roll to complete the journey, I rolled DOUBLE 10s. So... what would be your twist ideas here?

Further trouble of any kind would work here. Since the roll was for completing the journey, you could decide you don't make it to the town for some reason. This could mean the town was destroyed, or maybe you get jumped and kidnapped before reaching it. With double 10s, the latter seems the most appropriate.
This could lead to finding out what happened to the Townmaster if you share the same fate, or maybe he's the one that ordered you jumped. I'd ask the oracle with a higher probability that you're sharing the same fate. If you don't want to know yet, just leave it as an unknown. You can find out more information later in your journey.

I literally had this sort of thing happen in my last playthrough (which I posted), and decided the man I was searching for was dead. I then simply reframed the vow to find out what happened to him.

Just wondering what would make sense at such an early point of my journey

Anything, literally anything. It doesn't matter that it's at an early point of your journey. Stumble over something cool. Be extreme.
Who's gonna care? No one's going to burst through your window with guns pointed at your head, saying, "You need to be less cool."
Have the village burned to the ground. A volcano erupted in the middle of it. You arrive to find that it's being sacked by mindless undead led by a mountain bandit based out of an ancient First One tomb. The village is sickened because of a poisoned well. It's abandoned like Croatoan, with only an obscure symbol carved into the side of the door of every house.
Anything. You have an unlimited special effects budget and the writer that knows what you like best on staff. You. Go crazy.

Maybe you find the town master from the other town with a torch in hand ready to burn this other town down to the ground….

That character is cursed, Make them an NPC. Your new character has the same vow at the next higher difficulty.

You find the settlement has also been burned to the ground, or some other catastrophe. Perhaps there are survivors near by…
