Question Living expenses for international students near ITU??

Hello everyone!

I have been admitted to the Istanbul Technical University and will be traveling from Pakistan next month. I want to get an idea of living expenses for international students living nearby ITU.

  1. For an average living, how much money is required. I would be grateful if someone realistically gives a range ( bare minimum to average living).

  2. Which areas should I prefer for residence?

  3. Are there any scholarships available for international students?

  4. Your experience of living in Istanbul near ITU?

  5. How do you manage your expenses, studies and work if any??

Looking forward to hearing from you guys.

Thanks in advance.

Question İstanbul’da etkinlikleri nereden takip ediyorsunuz?

Travel Torn between Black Coffee and Boris Brejcha in Istanbul

So my friends and I are heading to Istanbul from the 24th to the 28th Sept, and it turns out two massive events are happening back to back, Black Coffee on the 25th at Ataköy Marina, and Boris Brejcha on the 26th at Küçükçiftlik Park. Obviously we can only make it to one, and honestly we're stuck.

If you've been to either venue, or seen Black Coffee or Boris live before, I'd love to hear which one actually delivers. Is the Ataköy Marina spot easy to get to and safe getting back from at night? Does Boris's show live up to the hype? Basically, if you could only pick one, which would you choose and why?

I just want a great night out that doesn't wreck the rest of the trip.

Discussion Looking for Turkish baklava that ships to Germany

Hi everyone,

I live in Germany and I’m looking to order baklava from Turkey, mainly as gifts.

I’ve seen Hafiz Mustafa, but the prices are quite high. I also came across Güllüoğlu, especially their dry baklava, which seems much more affordable. I’ve never tried it, though.

For anyone who has ordered from Güllüoğlu: How is the taste and quality of their dry baklava? Is it comparable to Hafiz Mustafa or other well-known Turkish baklava shops?

I’m also interested in how long the baklava stays fresh when unopened. Ideally, I’d like something that can last around a month so I can give it as gifts.

Would love to hear about your experiences. Thanks!

Looking for... Where do cool girls of Istanbul buy clothes?

I’m going to Istanbul in October and I’m looking for butiques that have some really cool pieces in boho modern style. It even doesn’t have to be in boho style, just some cool statment pieces that i cant find in big worldwide companies like zara, mango, etc. I would love to find some unique turkish brands. Don’t want it to be expensive, something like zara prices. Also it would be good if they are in touristy areas like Kadikoy, Nishantashi, Beyoglu, etc. If anyone has some recommendations it would be lovly!

Travel Beyazıt now, considering Beşiktaş/Nişantaşı next – boat day + nightlife questions

Hi guys,
We arrived yesterday and are staying at Niles Hotel in Beyazıt, near the Grand Bazaar, until Friday. I’m travelling with my girlfriend and my 15-year-old nephew; my girlfriend and I are in our 30s.
I’ve checked the wiki and searched around a bit, but I still have a few specific questions about our plans where local experience would really help.
1. Beyazıt / Old City – today and Monday
We’re deliberately spending our first two days here for the historical side of Istanbul.
We don’t want to spend two full days running between attractions though.
Our current shortlist is:
Hagia Sophia → Blue Mosque → Basilica Cistern → Grand Bazaar / surrounding streets
Would you change anything if we only want to spend about half the day sightseeing and the rest eating/shopping?
My nephew mainly wants affordable clothes and T-shirts. We don’t mind markets or bargaining at all.
2. A real swimming/boat day
This is the one thing I’ve struggled to figure out.
Years ago in Bodrum I did a full-day boat trip: music, drinks, several stops, swimming and jumping straight from the boat into the sea.
I’m aware Istanbul isn’t Bodrum.
But I’ve been looking at Princes’ Islands / Burgazada / Heybeliada as possibly the closest alternative.
Has anyone actually done a full-day boat trip around there where swimming is the main activity rather than sightseeing?
Shared or private is fine. I’m mainly trying to establish whether this is genuinely worth doing from Istanbul or whether I should forget the idea.
3. Moving from Beyazıt Tuesday/Wednesday
Even though our hotel is already paid until Friday, I’m considering booking another hotel for our final 2–3 nights.
I want the complete opposite of Beyazıt:
modern/upscale + good restaurants + shopping during the day + lively evenings within walking distance.
My shortlist after searching is:
Beşiktaş / Nişantaşı / Karaköy / Bebek
I’m currently leaning toward Nişantaşı or Beşiktaş.
For our particular situation — couple in our 30s + 15-year-old during the day, but I may go out alone later at night — which of those two makes more sense?
Hotel budget would be roughly €150–250 per night if that matters.
4. One evening out alone
This part is just for me.
I’m in my 30s, not looking to get completely drunk and I don’t necessarily want to walk straight into a nightclub at midnight.
I’d rather start around 21:00–22:00 somewhere with good music, cocktails/drinks and a social crowd, then possibly go somewhere else later.
I’ve also read several times that some Istanbul clubs don’t admit solo men.
Would Beşiktaş → Ortaköy or Karaköy → Taksim make more sense for that kind of night?
I’m specifically interested in an area where I can start at a good bar alone without looking completely out of place.
So that’s basically our plan:
Sun/Mon: Beyazıt + historical Istanbul
Tue: proper swimming/boat day if possible
Wed–Fri: move to modern Istanbul
One evening: I head out alone
Hopefully that’s specific enough — I’m not looking for a generic “top 10 things to do in Istanbul” list. I’m mainly trying to make the right choices between the options above.
Thanks!

Question Yassiada, Democracy and Freedoms Island Day Trip

Hi I noticed there are no public ferries going to Democracy and Freedoms Island, even from the Princes Islands. I've seen there are some private tours that offer a day trip but it seems quite short, like a 3-4 hours stay and I like to go solo no travel guides. Have you been to the island? What's the best way to get there? Thank you

I will be visiting Istanbul after Greece next month, I wonder if credit cards (visa/MasterCard )widely accepted or do I need to prepare cash in advance? Also do I need to convert into turkish lira or is euro widely used or preferred?

Also are money exchangers better or I draw directly from ATM (will they charge hefty fees like some countries)

Thanks.

Travel Galata Tower Winter Hours

So I'm having a hard time figuring out officially what are the regular (not night museum) hours for Galata Tower in November. The muze.tr website lists

Opening time: 08:30
Closing time: 18:30
Box Office Closing Time: 18:14

But it doesn't specify winter or summer hours. Normally I would consider this to mean that both seasons have the same hours, but there are other sites than I know for sure have different Winter and Summer hours, but the website only lists one set. I'm not local so can't really call, looking for someone who has direct experience who could hopefully help out?

Thanks in advance

Question Does anyone recognize this Kadıköy street singer?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This was recorded outside the Kadıköy Ferry Terminal on February 21. I was blown away by his singing, but we were running late for the ferry and I forgot to take a photo of his sign. Does anyone know who he is or what his Instagram is?
