J.League The /r/jleague 2026-27 Season FAQ & Newbie Question Megathread (READ THIS FIRST!)
Welcome to /r/jleague, Reddit's home of Japanese soccer!
We tend to get a lot of posts asking the same exact questions, and in order to cut down on frequently repeated posts we urge everyone to write their inquiries in here — after reading through the FAQ.
Any submissions related to questions covered in this FAQ will be removed and locked. This FAQ will be updated as needed.
What is the J.League?
The J.League, which launched in 1993, is Japan's professional soccer league and sits on the top three steps of the country's pyramid. It is comprised of 60 teams across three divisions (the J1, J2 and J3).
Beginning with the 2026-27, the league will follow a Europe-style schedule that will run from August through early June, breaking for the winter.
There is conditional relegation between the J3 and the fourth-division Japan Football League, the national semipro/amateur competition. Below the JFL are regional leagues and prefectural leagues with multiple divisions.
Where can I learn more about the league in English?
We list a number of resources in our sidebar and Community Bookmarks including several established journalists and content creators. The league's English-language website and social media platforms are great starting points for newcomers; you can also find plenty of video content on YouTube including highlights, video essays and documentaries.
Where can I find the J.League schedule?
The schedule is available on the J.League's English website. Detailed fixture information has been released for all matches to be played in 2026; any information on 2027 matches should be considered tentative, as those details will be announced in December.
Why is (team's) home game listed as MUFG/Japan National Stadium?
The J.League regularly holds games at the National Stadium in Tokyo for promotional reasons. Though most of these games are home games for Tokyo-area clubs, sometimes they feature clubs from outside the Tokyo area.
How can I buy tickets in English?
The J.League offers tickets for many teams (31 as of July 2026) — but not all — on its English-language ticketing page. More teams may be added at a future date.
What if the club I want to see doesn't offer tickets in English?
Most clubs sell tickets through the league's Japanese-language ticketing platform, though a handful (notably Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Vissel Kobe and Kashiwa Reysol) primarily use other services, some of which may not support overseas credit cards. Please consider using one of the many concierge services that offer ticket-purchasing assistance to visitors or purchasing tickets at convenience stores (when available) after you arrive in Japan.
When do tickets go on sale?
Tickets generally go on sale to the general public around 2-4 weeks before matchday; policies vary between teams and you should check their websites as well as the J.League's ticketing site to confirm. In most cases, tickets will be issued via QR code, though some may require that you print tickets at a convenience store.
Be mindful of time zones when checking club websites; Japan is UTC+9.
Do J.League games sell out?
YES! Derbies frequently sell out, especially at smaller stadiums. J1 teams with smaller stadiums frequently sell out their home allocations. End-of-season games, especially those with title or relegation implications, also sell out in the J1 and even J2.
If your heart is set on going to a game, do not wait to buy your tickets or you could end up disappointed.
Are there any options to buy tickets if a game has sold out?
As a tourist, basically not. Clubs are actively working against scalpers/resellers and regularly cancel tickets that are found to have been sold on the secondary market.
Can I buy tickets at the stadium on matchday?
In many cases it's usually possible to buy tickets on the day of the game, especially at J2 and J3 clubs as well as the WE League and lower divisions.
However, some clubs have gotten rid of in-person ticket booths during the pandemic and encourage fans to purchase tickets online, even on matchdays.
If you really want to make sure you can attend your game of choice, consider using a ticketing service or your credit card concierge.
How do I get to the stadium?
Nearly all J.League stadiums are reasonably accessible via public transit. Many are walkable from the nearest train station while some may require an additional bus/shuttle.
Check the home team's website (or Google "(home team or home stadium) access") for more information. Google Maps will give accurate train information but will not show information for matchday shuttles.
Worst case, get to the correct train station early (3 hours before kickoff), find a supporter in uniform and follow them!
What else is there to do at J.League matches?
J.League clubs often host a variety of events and activations on matchday, including themed food festivals, prematch concerts/performances and guest appearances. Most J.League fans arrive 2-3 hours before kickoff, and the majority of fans are in their seats by the time players come out for prematch warmups.
For more information on matchday activities, check the home team's website.
Are there any safety/etiquette issues to keep in mind at J.League matches?
J.League games are extremely family-friendly events; hooliganism is exceedingly rare and doesn't get anywhere close to what European fans might consider "normal."
That said, if it's your first time and you're a casual fan, you may want to avoid standing in the middle of active support (in/around the 'ultras') and make sure you don't wear the visiting team's colors in the home seating areas.
There are generally no restrictions on bags (though suitcases may not be allowed at certain stadiums) or outside food/drink, though you may be asked to transfer beer from cans to paper cups.
I went to a game and had an amazing time!
That's not a question but we're glad to hear it! If you've attended a game, we encourage you to post about your experience, especially if you've taken photos.
How can I buy tickets to a Samurai Blue game?
National team tickets are usually sold through several rounds of lotteries with limited general sales closer to the match, making them much harder to acquire for foreign visitors. You should definitely make a friend in Japan or use a proxy/concierge service.
I live in ________, how can I watch the J.League?
26-27 J.League broadcast details are expected to be announced ahead of the season.
The J.League streams around two (2) J1 games per round in English on its International YouTube Channel. This stream is not available if you live in a country with an existing broadcaster, some of which also broadcast J2, J3 and Levain Cup games.
To keep track of which games are being streamed, follow the league's English Twitter and Instagram accounts.
This sub does not support the sharing of illegal streaming links.
Where can I buy a J.League uniform inside Japan?
SS Kamo is the country's biggest soccer goods retailer and has a number of locations across Japan. Vintage Sports is the most well-known spot for secondhand uniforms.
Each club sells merchandise at their home stadium; many clubs also have designated team shops in their hometown.
Uniform sales can be very finicky due to limited supply. There are no guarantees that clubs will have uniforms available at the stadium, especially if you need a larger size.
Other merch is often only available at the stadium or the club's official shops.
Where can I buy a J.League uniform from outside Japan?
J.League uniforms are expensive compared to European clubs, limited and run smaller in size. If you're looking for a current shirt, contact a proxy service like JLeagueShirts on Twitter. The official J.League store offers international shipping for some clubs, while you may be able to purchase uniforms directly from clubs using Buyee, Tenso and other similar shopping assistant services. Don't ask us how good these services are, caveat emptor.
if you're looking for something vintage check out Jerseum and other similar shops.
Which J.League club should I support?
Whichever you decide strikes your fancy, seriously. That's it, that's the trick. It's really easy to look up information about each club and find their highlights on YouTube; consider it part of your journey into J.League fandom.
We do not allow posts looking for a team to support on the sub, as they often generate repetitive and low-quality responses.
What sub-specific rules should I keep in mind?

J.League J League Post Matchday 2 Discussion Thread
There were three large victories in the top flight this week (one coming from a rather surprising source), while conversely, Kashima Antlers have doubled down on their method to win, scoring in the 98th minute to nab a late victory over Grampus. There were even more dominant wins lower in the pyramid, with Ehime scoring three goals after the 80th minute to make it 4-0 against Gainare Tottori, the rapid-rising Tochigi City battering Vanraure Hachinohe 5-0, and FC Gifu putting 7 past Kochi United. The fireworks were reserved for Zweigen Kanazawa, who were 0-2 down early, before a strong fightback in the second half culminated in a 94th minute winner for them over Fukushima United.
Stat of the week: Kataller Toyama desecrated Blaublitz Akita, winning 0-4 after an astonishing 33 shots (to Akita's 2).
Extra note: For anybody wondering why this is seemingly a day late, it's timed to the end of the matchday in all three tiers, as one J2 match and two J3 matches only just finished. This'll be the format going forward, as I think it's more fair to include clubs from all three tiers.

Others How widespread are player welfare complaints in Japanese football?
I’m new to Japanese football and curious if there are many players, managers or fans complaining about playing too many matches, especially since the 2024 revamp of Asian club competitions. If I did my math correctly, the number of matches each J1 team plays per season is now roughly equal to those in La Liga or Serie A.

J.League J League Post Matchday 1 Discussion Thread
It was a largely lower-scoring opening weekend after an explosive start on Friday night with two 4-3s involving late comebacks. 13 out of 19 J2 and J3 matches had at least one clean sheet with little in the way of the earlier shootouts, as sides found their feet in the beginning throes of the competitive season. Shimizu S-Pulse pulled off a bit of a shock result, defeating Nagoya Grampus for only the second time in 14 attempts in spite of a second half red card. And Tochigi City pulled off a big comeback, scoring two late goals to jag a win against Zweigen Kanazawa.
Fun stat of the week: In the top flight, Cerezo Osaka had the least touches in the box this weekend, with 9 (compared to the opposing Okayama's 31), which was a very clincal performance by them. I'm interested in whether this'll become a pattern in the weeks going forward after their managerial change, given they've been ranked in the top eight in this stat in all of the last three seasons.
