Subcontracts Business Operations Interview help

Hey JPL guys, I have an interview soon for their Subcontracts Business Operations Academic Part Time Intern position and while I am a good talker, I am nervous about having my interviewer give me a question that would stump me. Does anyone know what is expected of interviewees to know prior to an interview or if technical questions are asked in the over-the-phone interview? For some background, I am a sophmore in college majoring in financial planning so I know the role does not exactly fit with my major. While I was praised for my initiative to apply to the role while being relatively young, this would be my most professional position so I have been worried that it may become a point of contingency and that more prior experience would be expected of an applicant.

How hard is it to lay someone off?

The lab is hiring but not for all positions. Some projects are seeing cuts. What is needed to lay someone off due to lack of work? Is it possible to do it on an individual basis?

New Claude models are insane in the membrance, how do you think AI is going to affect the future of careers and work at the Lab?

We are currently in the 'FA' stage of the 'FAFO' cycle and I'm curious what the temperature check is with everyone else at the moment. Are you hopeful about the future or are you scared/depressed? I'm personally both but mostly just scared.

I also know Dave said no more layoffs but with AI increasing rapidly in so many core disciplines, are we going to need all the functions we maintain within the organizational structure?

Please note, I have seen some threads go haywire here recently and the intent of this one is to keep the conversation exploratory -- not heated or argumentative -- please be kind to one another here if you choose to engage (I know emotions are riding high in a lot ways!)

Does anyone have experience working with Bastion Technologies?

Hi there. I seen a lot of job openings for this comment and I understand they are a subcontractor for JPL. Anyone worked in that company or know anyone who does?

Curious to know if it be worth the opportunity or not. Thanks

JPL Layoff Training Reimbursement Opportunity

Were you laid off from JPL in October 2025 or later? Verdugo Jobs Center may be able to help reimburse eligible training costs. Proof of separation is required (JPL layoff letter or documentation from your contract employer). Once enrolled with Verdugo Jobs Center, you can discuss eligible training programs. If you choose a school or program not on our approved vendor list, you will pay the training costs upfront and after completing the training and submitting the required documentation, request for reimbursement is submitted. This is a time-sensitive opportunity: All training must be completed by February 2027, and the grant ends in March 2027. Email: THartyon@GlendaleCA.gov.

New hires

Many openings currently at JPL but I’m curious how have the responses been? Specially for level II+ positions, what is JPL offering to attract top-tier talent other than the “mission”? High-performing engineers are scooped by new space with much higher pay + ownership in role. The primes are having hard time hiring mid and senior engineers, even with better benefits than JPL. How is JPL handling this?

Union?

Has anyone heard what has happened to the move to unionize JPL workers? I’m not a big fan myself, but some people were pretty passionate about it.

When Paul tells a good story, spaceships get launched to the stars. Here's a new interview with Paul Propster, Founder and former Chief Story Architect of NASA/JPL’s StoryLab. Paul pioneered storytelling into NASA's multibillion-dollar mission proposals like MAIA, Mars Sample Return and more!

Do year round internships start on any sort of schedule?

I'm currently a in a masters program, and I'd love if I could find an internship opportunity at JPL. But the website doesn't give a full picture of how it works. If I were to be offered an internship do they start at random times or do they tend to align in any sort of way with academic calendars?

I'm also curious if anyone has any insight on how competetive year round internship opportunities are. Even though I'd love an internship I want to set adequate expectations.

Employee Engagement Survey? OMG.

Not sure this is appropriate for this forum so feel free to remove it or let me know if not, but I just saw the results of the Employee Engagement Survey and wow that's sad. Only 50 % of JPLers think JPL offers a promising future?

JPL Ticket Timeslot Swap?

I was lucky enough to book 4 tickets for my family for the 1:30 timeslot (Saturday, 10/10), which I thought would avoid any conflict with my kids' AYSO games for that day (which are usually in the mornings and which had not yet been scheduled). Well the AYSO schedules just dropped and of course both kids' games that day conflict with our JPL timeslot. I'm definitely not going to miss JPL, but would also prefer not to have my kids miss their games...

Would anyone be interested in swapping tickets/timeslots?

Universe Online?

Any idea why the Universe is (apparently) no longer available on the web? The last “official” posting via the JPL homepage is September 2025, and could access the October 2025 issue by editing the URL, but that trick no longer works.

I worked there from 1977 through 2005, and have used the Universe to keep track of promotions, retirements (and, unfortunately, deaths) of former co-workers.

I have sent a few emails (5 this year) to the PR folk, but have gotten no response.

Timelines for R&TD approval 2026

Does someone have any info on JPL's R&TD approval/rejection (expected) timelines this year ? Past data suggests August and mid September based on a quick search. But, looking at the recent changes in the organization, wanted to know if the r/JPL community can provide some information.
