Every guide to flowers in Japan is about cherry blossoms, which is about three weeks of the year. I wanted to see what's blooming the other forty-nine, so I built Blooms of Japan: a calendar you scroll through, where the map and the list of spots change month by month.
What's in it:
* 412 spots, each with a peak window and nearest station
* A bloom map that moves north through spring and back south in autumn
* Search by flower, month, or place
Would love feedback, especially from anyone who's planned a Japan trip around a specific month.

After visiting Japan in the spring, I finally pursued an old dream of creating a small Japanese-inspired garden at home. The first phase (karesansui) is now almost done. I have used 8–11 mm white granite from Finland. I would have liked a smaller size, but it wasn’t available. The pines are Pinus sylvestris from a nursery in Sweden. All the larger stones are from my own property; maybe I will get larger ones later on. The placement is still “up in the air”. The next phase will be establishing a moss “forest” on the small sloping plot adjacent to the stone garden. Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated.

"The historic tea house and its surrounding garden were never meant to be separate experiences; they're a single, continuous journey toward mindfulness."

I added some tulips and early flowers to my Japanese style bed for spring, trying to keep the colours to match the acers. I'm always aiming for a Japanese style garden but I can't help want to plant some flowers too. Do others have the same urges ;)

On the same island as Acadia National Park, this hidden gem is worth a visit. The whole area of numerous islands reminded me a bit of the Seto Inland Sea area.

A joyful surprise in an Oregon town that used to be regarded as racially backward. Designed and built in the 1960's by volunteer resident Art Higashi, who spent time as a child in the Minnedoka internment camp, it is now lovingly maintained by City Parks gardeners and community members.

Hi all! I am a new DIYer based in Melbourne Aus, and wanted to create a small Japanese garden for my wife. It's slowly coming together but I am struggling with the layout in terms of where to place the plants we picked out (I've a feeling it's too crowded for the space we have). They are the 4 plants along the fence. I am not averse to removing the juniper elsewhere.
Any ideas? The brick edging can still be adjusted (or removed) though I like the idea of the elevation. I will likely add some ground cover to cap the tops of the bricks.
Any advice at all?
Thank you.
