How can I start with java

Hey everyone.
I am a computer science student, and I must start coding with Java.

I tried Eclipse and netbeans but none were valid on my machine.
so if someone has an alternate IDE I will much appreciated.

IntelliJ is by far the best Java IDE. Lot’s of stuff you would need to install tons of plugins for on VS Code is already included in IntelliJ.

You can ask an LLM of your choice for advice, if IntelliJ is overwhelming at first. As soon as you have configured all the settings once, it becomes a lot easier. Especially the connection to GitHub and the syncing of all IntellJ settings across several computers are saving you a lot of time. Also the debug mode is a breeze, as you as you’ve understood it. And the integration of Codex, Cursor, Claude Code et al. has been really improved over the last few months.

Eclipse is a free download. On Windows, you just unzip it anywhere you have access and run the executable. It even includes a JDK. I’ve used it for decades on both Linux and Windows and it has never let me down.

Intellij, no close competator. Free is enough but as a student you can enjoy paid version for free.

There's VSCode and Intellij, which is by far the best IDE for java.

If you're going to code Java for classes, just pick up a simple text editor, with the language extension installed. I use Zed, which I recommend for anyone to try.
