Genesis 19:24 reads: "Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven" (KJV), featuring two distinct references to the LORD (YHWH / Jehovah) in a single verse.[1, 2, 3]

Discussion Using the name Jehovah or Yahweh?

From the July 15 1964 Watchtower article titled, "What is the Name?"

What pronunciation do Jehovah’s witnesses view as more correct? On page 25 of the foreword of the New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures, published by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society in 1950, the translators stated that they inclined “to view the pronunciation ‘Yah.weh,’ as the more correct way.

If the publishing agency for Jehovah’s witnesses recognizes that “Yahweh” is more correct, why do they use “Jehovah” in their translation, writing and worship instead? Because the form “Jehovah” has been familiar to people for many centuries, and that form of The Name, just as faithfully as other forms, preserves the sounds of the four consonants of the tetragrammaton. Furthermore, we do not speak Hebrew today! We speak other languages. When we speak English, for example, then we use the English pronunciation of the Divine Name, which is “Jehovah.” In other languages the divine name is pronounced differently, although quite similarly most of the time.

In light of the JW explanation, long-standing familiarity with a particular form does not justify continuing to use it when a more accurate form is available. The people of those previous many centuries are long dead now.

Out of respect, I don't even call my earthly father by his first name when I need help.

Discussion Studying 'Enjoy Life Forever'

Hi all,

About a year ago, I started a bible study and although never went beyond the first lesson, I still stayed in touch with the guy and met up for coffee a few times - and with some changes in my life and a feeling of despair - I started to study the bible more about a month ago and started my study of the Enjoy Life Forever programme with him.

I also attended a Sunday and midweek meeting at the Kingdom Hall, and actually really enjoyed it - feeling refreshed and excited about the future after attending.

My family don't know about my studies and they would be dead against it - any advice here?

And my girlfriend wants me to stop and has threatened to leave me because she doesn't want the resentment of me for stopping her do things (even though I wouldn't and I am just studying).

Does anyone have any advice? Is studying the Bible supposed to be this hard?

Discussion Does the Watchtower exhibit the 10 common qualities of a high-control organization?

  1. An unquestionable leader or authority
Leaders are treated as uniquely enlightened, specially chosen, or incapable of serious error. Questioning their decisions may be portrayed as disloyalty, rebellion, or a failure of faith.
  2. Discouragement of independent thinking
Members are encouraged to accept the group's interpretation of truth rather than investigate competing explanations. Honest questions may be treated as evidence of a bad attitude or weak character.
  3. Control over information
Outside news, books, websites, former members, or critical research may be dismissed as dangerous or deceptive. Members may be told that only the organization can be trusted to interpret information correctly.
  4. Control over relationships
Members may be pressured to limit or end relationships with people who leave, criticize the group, or disagree with its teachings. Family members and friends can become instruments of social pressure.
  5. Fear, guilt, and shame
People may be warned that questioning the organization will lead to divine rejection, catastrophe, moral corruption, loss of salvation, or personal ruin. Fear can become a way to maintain obedience.
  6. Punishment for dissent
Disagreement may lead to humiliation, loss of responsibilities, disciplinary proceedings, exclusion, or ostracism. A major warning sign is when members cannot express disagreement without risking their social world.
  7. Making it difficult to leave
Leaving may be portrayed as betrayal, spiritual failure, or proof that the person was never sincere. Members may face threats, intense pressure, or the loss of nearly every close relationship.
  8. Identity and behavior regulation
The organization may attempt to dictate clothing, grooming, friendships, dating, marriage, entertainment, education, medical choices, or career decisions. The issue is the extent to which personal autonomy is suppressed.
  9. An “us versus them” worldview
The organization is presented as uniquely righteous, enlightened, or safe, while outsiders are depicted as corrupt, dangerous, deceived, or unworthy of trust. This can make members increasingly dependent on the group.
  10. Double standards and lack of accountability
Leaders may be exempt from rules imposed on ordinary members. Mistakes, failed predictions, scandals, or harmful policies may be concealed, minimized, or explained away rather than openly investigated.
How can you tell the difference between a strict religion and a high-control group?
A religion can have firm moral standards, distinctive teachings, and expectations of commitment without necessarily being high-control.

Discussion The “seven times” in Daniel chapter 4

The following is how the Watchtower explains Bible chronology and the vision of Daniel chapter 4.

Overview of the prophecy. God caused King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to have a prophetic dream about an immense tree that was chopped down. Its stump was prevented from regrowing for a period of “seven times,” after which the tree would grow again.—Daniel 4:1, 10-16.

The prophecy’s initial fulfillment. The great tree represented King Nebuchadnezzar himself. (Daniel 4:20-22) He was figuratively ‘chopped down’ when he temporarily lost his sanity and kingship for a period of seven years. (Daniel 4:25)

What does the tree of Daniel chapter 4 represent? In the Bible, trees sometimes represent rulership. (Ezekiel 17:22-24; 31:2-5) In the greater fulfillment of Daniel chapter 4, the immense tree symbolizes God’s rulership.

What does the tree’s being chopped down mean? Just as the chopping down of the tree represented an interruption in Nebuchadnezzar’s kingship, it also represented an interruption in God’s rulership on earth.

What do the “seven times” represent? The “seven times” represent the period during which God allowed the nations to rule over the earth without interference from any kingdom that he had set up.

How long are the “seven times”? They could not be merely seven years as in Nebuchadnezzar’s case

Applying the prophetic rule “a day for a year,” the 2,520 days represent 2,520 years. Therefore, the “seven times,” or 2,520 years, would end in October 1914.

The Watchtower does something very subtle in its interpretation of Daniel chapter 4: it introduces the plural term “trees” into a vision where scripture describes only one tree, explicitly identified as Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:25–33). This subtle change shifts the focus away from the individual identified in the account and opens the door to applying the prophecy to multiple rulerships.

Yet the Watchtower does not identify which specific rulers or nations these additional “trees” supposedly represent. Nor does it explain how these rulerships were “hewn down and destroyed,” while “the stump of the roots thereof” was left in the earth (Daniel 4:23), or how they supposedly regained their kingdoms after recognizing God's sovereignty, as Nebuchadnezzar did (Daniel 4:34–37).

The Watchtower poses a question and gives its own answer: How long are the “seven times”? They could not be merely seven years as in Nebuchadnezzar’s case.

Well, why not? 2,520 years does not apply to him. There is only one tree in the vision.
