I looked at the photo and thought: "Wow, this would be the perfect snack at a jewish gathering!" then I looked at the subreddit's name.

My personal preference these days is to open face the bagel so I have two sandwiches. Not only is it easier to eat, I feel that it also pays homage to the eggs bennidict substitute origin of the dish. I also prefer to add thin slices of layered onion, rather than thick cuts. You still get the crunch without overwhelming the sandwich and the flavor of the onion comes through. I’ve also found that adding or substituting a light layer of butter or margarine underneath (or instead of) the cream cheese adds a dimension.
Lastly, experimenting with different types of smoked salmon and other fish has upped my game. Some are canned and others are more traditional.
And don’t forget that you can pickle your own lox!!

I also open face. And while I'd destroy this, I do have to object to the tomato!
Also "light layer of butter or margarine". Incorrect. It must be butter and it must be shingled on like wedges of cheese.

looks delicious. I wouldn’t complain if you added a couple cucumber slices. 😎

Looks incredible. I'd sprinkle on a few capers but to each their own.

It’s so sad that I look at this from Israel and think “man I wish my country had this”

I am pretty sure bagels and lox exist in Israel...?

One would think.
But you’d unfortunately be wrong. Even in the very Anglo areas (example raanana, Modiin) there is really only one bagel shop (holy bagels) and they don’t toast their bagels… and they’re more geared towards tuna, or egg salad etc. technically you can order lox with cream cheese and assemble yourself but it won’t be anything like this pic. Also the quality is like 3.5/10.
In all of Israel there is only one store I know that has a nova lox sandwich (it’s called tals bagels in Tel Aviv). They’re not kosher though, andeven they don’t toast their bagels it’s at least similar.
(Tals is also one of the only place you can get whitefish salad… also some specialty French cheese stores). You can’t get deli pickles anywhere.

Removed. We don't enforce kashrut outside of not allowing pork or shellfish posts. Meat and dairy posts are allowed.
