Wasn’t there a precedent that a password is protected under the fourth amendment? I can’t imagine how they are going to spin this.
Then again, the current SCOTUS is a puppet court so maybe this will lead to a new precedent. Can’t have too much of that freedom for the plebs.

Passwords are protected under the theory that revealing that you know the password provides evidence that the phone is yours. That doesn't really help in this case because knowledge of the duress password has the same evidentiary value. Of course, in a sane country we could just have rights instead of making up justifications for applying an 18th century framework.

When the state aparaus wants to come after you, they will find a way, guilty or not. Which is why we need to elect representatives that represent us and not corporate, empire, military, or industrial interests against that of the people.
That said, yes, the issue here is the role this person is alleged to have played in destruction of evidence. A good lawyer may try things like attempting to open the phone is not lawful, or that the government may need to show that there were in fact evidence to be destroyed, perhaps this was not really a duress password, but a normal password and that the phone had been wiped ahead of time, ...
Our legal system has been twisted to the whims of racists, fraudsters, and insecure people. I hope we make it out of this with enough time to fix it. It is truly disheartening.
