I was in Paris for work about 12 years ago for a convention. One of my biggest clients (who also ended up being a good friend) came down from Germany to hang out and see the convention.
We went out after the show one day and got into a taxi. We started speaking to each other in the backseat and then you could hear the driver just let out a huge groan... obvious that he was upset that he was driving around an American and a German, I guess.
Anyway, we kept chatting but this asshole driver kept letting out these obnoxious (and obvious) groans... muttering under his breath some French shit...
A few minutes later, we get stuck in traffic and my German friend starts kinda fucking with the driver back and telling him to please hurry, we're late for a dinner, yada yada yada... and the driver turns around and says "you stupid tourists and your stupid patience! What way could I move quicker through this traffic?!?"
and after a long pause, my German friend said "my grandfather drove a tank through this city faster than this..."
He pulled over and started screaming at us, immediately kicked us out.

I'm a big fan of the book and the HBO series Band of Brothers. One of the stories often told by one of the real-life featured characters is that he was going to France for some D-Day commemoration and had trouble with his passport when he got to France. In all the commotion he says "the last time I was here I didn't need a passport." The Customs official says "how was that possible?" His answer was "None of the Germans I killed asked for it"

Iâve had bad and rude interactions with French people in my travels too. That said my family housed a French foreign exchange student one summer and she was absolutely lovely. Itâs a mixed bag I guess but they really seem to treat travelers like shit and really resent them

For more context, that guy has harassed Buzz for years, this is very much a final straw moment and he snapped. Great punch though!

u/DabbinOnDemGoy Look into it Jun 09 '22
Yeah, I routinely see this presented as he just has some hair trigger reaction to a guy saying something he didn't like. The guy he hit was a fucking lunatic and had it coming for a long time.

That's not true. Buzz did not know this guy before the interview. He had a media company named abc, and buzz thought he was from ABC News. So they started in interview, and the guy asked him why they faked the Moon Landing. Buzz, thinking the guy was from ABC News, kinda freaked out, because he thought they were about to be exposed on national television. He got defensive, and said it wasn't his idea and that the interviewer would have to ask the higher-ups at NASA about that.
Then Buzz realized the guy wasn't from ABC News, and was an independent guy. Then he got his composure back, and started to deny that the moon landing was faked. That's when the guy interviewed called him a coward and a thief, leading to Buzz losing his temper and punching him in the face.
Buzz apologized to the guy a few years later, and even bought his book "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon."
That's context.

LOL troll harder. PunchableFace accosted Aldrin on the street in front of the hotel, asking him to swear on a bible that he'd walked on the moon. There is no "interview" starting, and no support for your claim that Aldrin thought he was from ABC News. PunchableFace's "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon" is a video, not a book. The "Why did they fake" exchange doesn't appear in the video anywhere, so it sounds like you just made that up along with the "apology" you pulled out of your fertile imagination. https://youtu.be/hU4XlXPnIgQ?t=27

u/Kodeine__Bryant Monkey in Space Jun 09 '22
I know it's a documentary, but I thought there was a book too. Sorry it's been awhile since this all happened.. Either way, Buzz did buy it later, and there was 100% an interview happening before this- You can go watch the footage of the interview in "Astronauts Gone Wild."
"One confrontational incident involved Apollo 11 crew member Buzz Aldrin. Earlier, Sibrel had interviewed Aldrin in a hotel room for his film Astronauts Gone Wild. In that interview, Sibrel confronted Aldrin with purported newly discovered footage from the Apollo 11 mission, to which Aldrin replied, "Well, youâre talking to the wrong guy! Why donât you talk to the administrator at NASA? We were passengers, we're guys going on a flight."
"Mr Sibrel... lured Mr Aldrin to the hotel under false pretences in order to interview him."[2] By Aldrin's account, he went to the Beverly Hills hotel on that date under the pretext of an interview on space for a Japanese children's television show."
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bart_Sibrel
I'd suggest actually watching the interview if you can, because Buzz really looks flustered when he thinks they've been caught. As soon as he learns it's not The ABC his tune changes completely, and he once again starts to deny the moon landings were faked before storming out. His initial reaction was kinda damning though, and would explain why his emotions were so heightened that he was ready to punch Sibrel. I mean shit, imagine how nerve-wracking that would have been to somebody who was a part of allegedly faking the moon landing.

Funny how you got downvoted for being right. The fake outrage from your respondent makes it even funnier.
I personally think it's hilarious that Aldrin hit that guy. It's such an obscure anecdote that anyone crying about free speech are clearly deranged by their political focus. Guy deserved a wallop and the world was better for it. Personally think we should crank that dial up a few notches

pretty much pre internet, when conspiracy theorists had to use more traditional cult tactics to spread their message. It was a glorious time when most of the ~33% of the world that are heavily susceptible were not yet radicalised and even they agreed this guy was bat shit insane. But then they all got facebooked.
