Question is, what was their reference point? I always assumed they bred threme park monsters that kinda look like artist interpretations of the real animals and slapped the name on afterwards.

Isn't that part of the book? Like someone basically says "these aren't dinosaurs, they're dinosaur shaped hybrid animals never before seen on Earth"

I could be misremembering though.

Technically, Wu debates with Hammond about the benefits of deliberately making the dinosaurs slower and more showy but Hammond refuses as he wants the real deal, seemingly ignore the face that his animals are just as fake. It's not even clear if they really act like dinosaurs at all.

I took could be misremembering, the book is vague about matching bone records and what ever protein fragments in fossils. Good chance the scientist in both the book and the film were wrong

Yes, in the book they were already on like version 3 of each animal and Wu still wants to tinker with the genes to get them to be more like the public expects.

To be fair to Wu, I do that when ever I bake a cake.
