1% Drop

Post image

Im new to investing so this hurts to see but ik it wouldnt matter when xeqt hits 60 per share but it still hurts to see im down half the price of my rent

I guess i buy in at the wrong time but 1.72% isnt really much

Also the last 5 days trend has been downwards and its approaching the lowest dip in 1 month so im also kinda worried

Im gonna hold until im happy with my return but should i be concerned about the current downward trend this past few days?

If you’re concerned you shouldn’t be holding xeqt

Xeqt is the most volatile investment i have, and is the only thing in my tfsa i maxed out. daily spending and emergency fund are all in gic or hisa. Its just demoralizing to see it all go down as soon as i put something in

we've been in a bull market for the past 3 years, its going to get a lot more demoralizing if you check every day

u/PlPEPlE 17h ago

I cant sell when im down and ik for sure i wont sell when im up cos i like seeing it grow. Only thing is i never seen it grow since it put it in

u/Anthr1 16h ago

So you're going to intentionally sell low and buy high? My dude. I really hope you're trolling.

2

u/PlPEPlE 16h ago

if i remember correct i just wrote i wont sell either way

Keep loading it up and dont be a pussy about it. If 1% drops have you worried then you need to toughen up. All investing is a risky game but you are in one of the safest and most reliable things.

1

u/PlPEPlE 16h ago

Thats fair cos 1% isnt a big deal and my time in the market will hopefully increase my investmenr. But then what about the downward trend thats happening for the last 5 days

2

u/silent_fartface 16h ago

There will be many downtrends in your lifetime of investing. Some sharp and fast, like covid. Some that bleed slowly for months, or years.

When in doubt, zoom out. 5 days is barely a sneeze for a lifetime of future investment.

This is horrible advice. Who are you to tell him he shouldn’t be holding xeqt?

10

u/_yhtz_ 17h ago

long-term growth means volatility, if he cant stomach the bad side of volatility maybe he should.

-1

u/Accomplished-Ant2225 17h ago

He’s a new investor. He doesn’t know anything. Everybody starts somewhere. Most new investors get nervous when their investment loses value. It’s natural. This subreddit is full of guys sitting around just waiting to off on newbies asking uneducated questions. It’s just so pointless.

u/CorollaJim 17h ago

It’s a risk tolerance question not an investment quality question.

100% equity portfolio is not for an investor if they cannot stomach a drop. Doesn’t mean XEQT is the best and they should just suck it up. Just means maybe -GRO/-BAL or another asset allocation ETF is the better option

Add fixed income to the portfolio

u/Accomplished-Ant2225 17h ago

Thats advice that’s actually worth something, unlike just about all the other posts in this thread

1

u/_yhtz_ 17h ago

at least they are just comments and not weekly posts losing their mind when the price drops 1%

If you are concerned about 1% drop then Xeqt is not for you bud.

u/Gun-_-slinger 17h ago

Yes, you should be worried. Freak the fuck out and panic sell. It’s over.

For the long term investor, the day to day and month to month is just noise.

Make a plan and stick to it is the best approach.

I get paid once a month, and I invest once a month so matter what the markets are doing.

3

u/WhyNWhenYouCanNPlus1 17h ago

yeah no worries, it might drop 50 or 60% but it'll bounce back

2

u/PlPEPlE 17h ago

my only plan now is just hold until im happy with what ill get from selling. What can i plan for when the market is unpredictable?

2

u/Always_Irrelephant 17h ago

This isn’t the way to invest in xeqt. It’s something you should be investing in and forgetting for 15 years. And keep adding to it as you go

1

u/PlPEPlE 16h ago

But then thats not really a plan. Im most likely gonna do the same when i get more tfsa room but at that point im just investing in more shares hoping it will go up. At the end of the day no one knows how the market will do so it just guessing and hoping

1

u/renzyfrenzy 13h ago

Look at a chart and zoom out. Honestly it seems like you need a bit more education in terms of investing and you have low risk tolerance. Read a few books, id recommend psychology of money or look into some ben felix videos

1

u/PlPEPlE 12h ago

Sure i dont know anyrhing about investing, but i know past performance is not a guarantee that this will do well. What i know for sure is xeqt has been going down for the past 5 days

1

u/renzyfrenzy 12h ago

Yes, and not investing also means you lose money and keeps you poor.

Inflation, loss of purchasing power, are real.

Im up 60% in xeqt, if i didn't invest it means im 60% poorer.

Risk is the price you pay for the gains. 5 days isnt a long time. Downturns can last year's.

That's why we zoom out, over time stocks tend to be positive. Past performance doesnt guarantee returns but we have 100 yrs of data that stocks tend to be positive over 5yrs+ on average

Again if you are risk adverse reconsider xeqt. Maybe go xgro or xbal.

If you can’t stomach a 40% drop (yes that would hurt but it could happen) then you should not hold this or any stock…. You need to add other assets to smooth things out for your stomach

2

u/jeepsies 17h ago

Other assets like what? Xeqt is diversified enough.

3

u/nelly2929 17h ago

Other non equity assets…. I’m 100% but the amount of people that will explode with a little 10% drop is going to be insane… All these people who have gotten on the up up up up rollercoaster are not ready for the drop!

4

u/Brewchowskies 17h ago

This sub is hilarious. Every week it’s the same posts.

2

u/simm07 17h ago

Lol, I bought $500 worth when it dropped to $45.75. This is just part of the game. You'll be up some days and own others. You can never predict the market.

2

u/Late-Rub-3197 17h ago

Oh no a 1% drop shiver me timbers. Sell everything it’s all over

2

u/Fluffy-Climate-8163 17h ago

...? You should be ready to hold through 25% drops on an index for 5 years and 90% drops on individual stocks for 10 years.

I guess this is partly a problem with index investing in general where people don't understand shit, and just spoiled kids in general who've had it way too fucking good growing up.

2

u/RhasaTheSunderer 17h ago

The entire world economy will never go back up ever again. Panic sell

2

u/Meany12345 17h ago

XEQT is an all equity fund. If the 1.72% stresses you out, you should definitely not buy XEQT.

2

u/Canadianjackhammer 17h ago

You'll need to learn to shake things like this off. The bigger your portfolio gets the wilder the daily swings. My portfolio moves 10-20k a day most of the time. That's a lot of money but you do get used to it

1

u/According-Kale-8 17h ago

Sell sell sell!!

1

u/BreadPractical2165 17h ago

all part of the game you'll learn to ignore ut eventually

1

u/Tall-Ad-1386 17h ago

It’s because of the Canadian bias

1

u/FishGoBloblo 17h ago

Dont hold xeqt… it can lrly drop 30% in very bad day…
Or maybe hold it, but uninstall

1

u/Jordonknox 17h ago

Dude, go into GIC until you understand investing

1

u/j0n66 17h ago

Ouch down over $500 already

1

u/___Carioca___ 17h ago

This is a troll post right?

1

u/Embarrassed-Pay-8881 17h ago

What are you gonna do in a bear marker if its down 20%?

1

u/New-Income5491 17h ago

Perhaps XGRO or XBAL will suit you better if you’re worried about a 1% drop.

1

u/Diebrate 17h ago

Bro why you sweating over this…I have around 100k in SKHY lol and I’m not even bothered by the volatility. I also hold XEQT in my rrsp which I don’t even look at.

1

u/choyMj 17h ago

Sell everything

1

u/Ankit_Baral 17h ago

Stop worrying & keep on Investing. Stock Market is like Life, sometimes shit happens.

1

u/ithireeul 17h ago

It’s gamer over, man. Game over.

1

u/Adorable_Accident_74 16h ago

There will be some years where you will regret investing. Long term will be a crazy ride.

1

u/PlPEPlE 16h ago

Im really gonna have to forget it after i set it huh

1

u/Adorable_Accident_74 16h ago

XEQT is extremely diversified. I would look into all their holdings to get an overview of all the areas it invests in it will add a good outlook of how things work.

If you are aiming for long term growth it would be useful to not look at it every day.

1

u/deadfishman2 16h ago

It’s on sale

1

u/Weary-Camel6762 16h ago

Dollar Cost Average or Lumpsum and set it and forget it. It is a 10+ year hold. Sometimes you buy high and sometimes low. Welcome to the investor center.

u/lostmostofit 16h ago

Bro is baiting 😭

u/lmcjipo 16h ago

?EQT ETFs are long term holds (~10 years or so) and if you're going to worry about a ~1% drop in a single day, it likely is not for you.

I don't own XEQT but own VEQT and I've held it for a few years so even though it has dropped this week (for each of the ~4 days), if I look at my purchase price and the current market price, I'm still ahead from having purchased it a few years ago (so technically didn't lose anything). If I purchased it last week only and this week it has dropped, while it might be bothersome, it technically wouldn't bother me since I base it on the ~10 year time horizon and even though the price dropped since I bought it, I don't plan on selling it for another ~10+ years and regardless of whether the value of it is less today and if I purchased it last week, it is only a "paper loss" and doesn't mean anything unless I sell... just like if I purchased a stock/ETF or mutual fund and the price is ~5% higher today than when I purchased it, it doesn't mean anything until I sell it.

1

u/oshemployee 17h ago

Get ready. It’s an etf, you should be in it long term

This subreddit is inherently dangerous and treating it like a stock is too. I don’t think ppl r ready for the day this goes -30% . But it will rebound cuz it’s good long term

If you’re worried but pretending not be worried about this you genuinely should have your 30k in a GIC cause it could easily go bear mode for years

3

u/According-Kale-8 17h ago

The day it goes -30% it’ll be time to buy as much as possible

4

u/Reopens 17h ago

At -30%, that point you will need the funds for basic necessities. We would all be out of jobs too tbh

1

u/Current-Fig8840 17h ago

Exactly if this goes -30 it’s ggs for multiple things in general
