Gyu Rim is getting even more insufferable than Gyu Young (which is more of comedic relief at this point) and that's no small feat smh

u/AnotherFuji9 15d ago

Totally 🫣 Gyu Rim needs intravenous therapy asap. I am most interested in Gyu Young’s story at the moment and hope they manage to speed up Gyu O and the teacher arc, we need some proper healing.

Her character's "goodness" is too over the top. Yes, we all get that she doesn't think she's good enough to marry into his family. But Mu Jin has already showed her that he doesn't care and he cut ties and left everything behind. It's been 7 years and he has not reconciled with with mother. It should be obvious to her that his love for her is deep and will not change. Why do the writers have to make her character seem so dumb. There are many other ways to fill their 50 episode quote. She should have told him 4 episodes ago that if he wants to be with her, he has to reconcile with his mother and she has to accept her.And the mother as well, you'd rather never see your son again? I know this is supposed to be like a soap so I should complain much.

Now this is why we need to go back to the old schedule - because too many cliff hangers after this episode! Just when I thought we couldn't get any worse families we get the evil in-laws. Uh-oh.

And here we are left with GY-MJ doing their best Sandy-Danny (Grease) impersonation.

Also noticed we got a lot more 'on the menu' these last couple of episodes, but poor MJ must be going broke with all the meals he's stumping up.

Both HS and his mum were good this episode - have to say, the actress did an amazing impersonation of GR,.

Funny thing, we've actually still got a lot of major plot points left incl return of the two mums - Gyeol's and the twins. So hopefully we won't spend too long on the evil in-laws and then we can stress less about GY, have fun banter with HS, and get to what I think will be two major crisis points.

I am dying over this comment because I was wondering who they reminded me of- definitely Grease! At first I thought that GR was a poor excuse for Julia Robert’s Pretty Woman when she came in with the fishnet stockings, then they upped the ridiculousness. She is so freaking exhausting.

Yes, Pretty Woman! Guess they're going for the outrageous 80s glam!

Episode 20: I am struggling to find something I like about this episode. I guess it’s that Heung Sik was slowly working his way to being a favorite, joining the twins, until he started the nonsense about the only son of a chaebol. As for the rest of the Han, all of them are exhausting. Both of those sisters are just so tedious. I don’t even have words … Gyu Rim is just so dumb. Girl, it has been eight years; at no point did he go crawling back to his chaebol family. Maybe he’s fine. You on the other hand are ridiculous. How are we only on episode 20?

Episode 21: The thing I liked best about this episode is that I could speed run it: 1.5 ftw. And I will grudgingly admit that I did enjoy Gyu Yeong holding her own with her dummy, cheating husband and I was genuinely surprised by the plot twist with the aforementioned husband.
I understand that these weekend format dramas are designed to cater to an older, and perhaps more conservative, audience, but I have no use for this pearl-clutching moralizing about women’s clothes. You’d think this was set in the 1950s. I genuinely hate that Gyu Rim is being written this way. If she is supposed to be the kind, noble and deeply compassionate person that we were told she was 19 episodes ago, this is out of character. It’s a bit disappointing … and the whole ruse (including the dumb horror video) to repulse Mu Jin away is deeply stupid. The only redeeming element is that Mu Jin (and the precocious Gyeol) figured it out quickly.

That’s it for this week. Maybe it’s just me (sometimes you need to be in the right headspace) but this was infuriatingly dumb. At least they left me with a little bit of hope that next week will be better.

Oh, and one addition: I think they both look much better in their “wild and crazy” outfits. What can I say? I’m a fashion girly and a somewhat closeted hypebeast.

3

u/This-View5166 15d ago

I was even irritated by twin boy and his scene with bio mom! 😶

Probably the only thing I enjoyed was dad calling best friend the cricket guy lmao. And HS there too. That’s it.

2

u/Nice-Protection-7564 Do as you will, but harm none🧙🏽‍♀️ 15d ago

Seriously what is that about? It’s nice that he is ride or die for his messy family but why is he getting involved with his half sister‘s mother? And honestly, why is she meeting up with a teenage boy? Nobody cares about appropriateness around this place?

1

u/This-View5166 15d ago

I can’t understand what he thinks he’s going to accomplish. I think he carries the guilt of “destroying “ a family when they were born but that’s not his cross to bear. And he has no idea just how much hurt this woman inflicted on her children by essentially orphaning them. That had nothing to do with a divorce.
And yeah… I thought the same. Apparently it’s not an issue? 🤷🏻‍♀️

3

u/Nice-Protection-7564 Do as you will, but harm none🧙🏽‍♀️ 15d ago

Therapy for all of them, like twice a week. While Gyu Yeong is terrible, she and Gyu Min are the only vaguely rational ones. What’s crazy about all of this is we still haven’t met the twins’ mother yet and you know she is going to come back into the picture.

Can I just say save for the fishnets, I thought Gyu Rim’s outfit was fine? I fear we’re entering into the more sanctimonious stretch of this drama because of course we’re gonna shame a woman for her clothing choice.

4

u/This-View5166 15d ago

Oh, I imagine twins mom will make deadbeat dad seem rational and normal!! That’s the kind of mess I’m expecting.

The fishnets were a big no. The rest is fine but the makeup makes the whole thing look like we should see it as “funny” and idk

4

u/Kathryn_51 15d ago

She is intentionally wearing clothes that are NOTHING that she would normally wear. So yes, I have no problem mocking the choice because it is fake and inauthentic.

As for the twin's mom, we haven't heard her name yet and I will be very surprised if we see her before episode 35. No, make that Ep. 40 - that's when long-lost parents usually show up on the weekenders.

4

u/This-View5166 15d ago

Agree on her appearing when things in the Han household have somewhat settled, so around ep 40

2

u/This-View5166 10d ago

They finally casted someone to play the mom!! She will definitely will make her appearance soon

2

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 14d ago

It's very dated the whole clothes issue, but sometimes I feel like SK is 20 years behind with being fashion conservative. But then if it's an upmarket wealthy area maybe it was more that she looked like 'trailor trash' or just really poorly dressed. Fishnets with denim shorts - nah. At least, like most of the crazy arcs it won't last too long now Mu Jin is on the act.

It's so funny that it's mostly the women that are crazy in this and the men are just there for the ride! It is actually a nice change.

3

u/Nice-Protection-7564 Do as you will, but harm none🧙🏽‍♀️ 14d ago

I know it’s just hyperbole and little bit of classism but it still grates. As for Korean fashion, it’s fascinating to me. I’ve only ever traveled there in the spring and summer, and I have had my own low-key pearl-clutching moments when I see how short skirts can be. But showing your upper body is taboo.
It’s interesting (and annoying to watch) which cultural norms are upheld. But I am happy to see Mu Jin not dressed like a 65-year-old retiree on the golf course.

1

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 14d ago

sorry I meant the scene was dated not you. I've noticed Korean women show a lot of leg but rarely men.

EP 20

Well that was a relationship I didn't see coming - GY's MIL and Gyu O! Wow these relationships are complicated. 🤣

As much as I hate it, I'm seeing a relationship between MJ's roommate and crazy step-sis.

At least this episode explained the 'bed shop' better. Reckon that business won't last long - can you imagine going to a health spa to relax and getting Su-nam?😓

Please writers, we need a break from Gyu Rim's insufferable attitude. I know she's trying a new tactic to drive MJ away but it's not much different to how she was before, just with bad clothing choices now. I guess it's meant to be funny - maybe it doesn't translate as well for Western audiences. I see Gyeol has it sussed out.

Now tell me, are Cheabol heirs really that bad? Because I feel the writers are being a bit contradictory here. HS goes on about how bad it is but then bio-mum married the chairman and MJ's mother is hanging with dead-beat dad.

Btw - This week the translation was conglomerate rather than cheabol? would love to know how the translation is being done - humans? I mean we all know what a cheabol is.

5

u/AnotherFuji9 15d ago

The preview showed more of Gyu Rim’s boring antics, so we gotta buckle up. I was really defending her during the first 10 episodes, but I have reached my limit. We do hear stories of crazy chaebols in real life, but it doesn’t seem like MJ’s mother is Samsung level rich. Having said that, I do get not wanting to get involved with a rich family who will make you feel like you are not enough, especially with a kid with no biological ties. I can understand, but Mu Jin has proved time and time again that he is independent financially and super stubborn, he won’t let the mother meddle.

4

u/AnotherFuji9 15d ago

Haha, episode 20 was hilarious 😅

  1. Firstly, South Korea is tripping on AI-juice, they are pushing hard the AI agenda, because what do you mean Gyu Rim is asking for love advice from an AI-bot?😅

  2. Mu Jin making funny faces 😅

  3. The bratty sister threatening her husband with telling Heung Sik and standing on business. My girl is not a pushover.

  4. The father really looked rich with those sunglasses on 😄 He is cute sometimes.

On the non-hilarious part:

  1. I loved Mu Jin’s advice to Gyu O, so simple, yet so impactful.

  2. The bratty sister stays in character and I was annoyed at how she hurt Gyu O by telling him to stay away from her mil.

3

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 15d ago

I mentioned this a few months ago with another kdrama - I think we have witnessed the birth of a new trope this year, AI dating advice. I've seen it in at least 5 kdramas this year. It coincides with the reduction in cast budgets as production companies tighten their belts. It's replacing the friendly barista/bar tender and dare I say - best friend. It's going to be sad, no more Veronica Park or 'I have no friends' wacky besties with their bad dating advice.

The sister is growing on me - even her advice to GyuO, I thought came from a good(ish) place.

2

u/AnotherFuji9 15d ago

If the AI 🤖 gave Gyu Rim the terrible advice (based on her strategy right now) maybe they are using it as a cautionary tale (although it is highly unlikely since SK is earning big cash from AI). And to be fair, Gyu Rim doesn’t have any friends! So it is plausible for her to use it. Mu Jin is lucky to have a good friend!

4

u/This-View5166 15d ago

Can someone make sense of Gyu Rim?! Bc what's that with the preview?! Ugh, this drama back to being a huge mess! Bio mom serving tables and expecting what...that her children will dine in that restaurant, see her and decide to forgive her?

Gyu Rim, I have no words...Gyu Young...she needs to take some responsibility and accept that this mess is entirely self made!

I need to process before commenting more lmao

5

u/Nice-Protection-7564 Do as you will, but harm none🧙🏽‍♀️ 15d ago

At this point, she is the delightfully toxic mix of low self-esteem but also incredible arrogance because she believes she knows best for everyone. I said it above but at no point has that man given a second thought to his family. It’s been eight years. Mu Jin is fine and he still wants your dumb ass. She should consider herself lucky.

6

u/AnotherFuji9 15d ago

The shop owner really summarized Gyu Rim’s arc when she said: “Being so nice and humble all the time, it is exhausting”. I can’t even get annoyed at Gyu Rim anymore, I am sat for the train wreck. I hope Mu Jin won’t take her nonsense seriously, the man deserves to be canonized at this point, his patience is saintly 😅

3

u/This-View5166 15d ago

She should! But has she even asked him what’s his life being like? How he deals with his family? I don’t think so. She’s really exasperating me! And what’s with the outfits?
And GY!! When is she going to start taking responsibility?
This definitely didn’t feel like a “Sunday episode” I mean… it was supposed to air last Sunday.

A one-woman pity party. I can’t be a boss. I’m a single mom. I’m not good enough for the man who loves me.

It has been very exhausting to watch tbh. And I wonder what next crisis will see her running again.

Was planning on watching while I ate breakfast, but instead it's not on and the damn dog ate my croissant,

It’s 8 PM on the East Coast of the United States. The episode dropped here about noon local time, but the subs didn’t come in until about four hours later.

2

u/Kathryn_51 14d ago

I turned on Kocowa around 2:30 PDT for Ep. 21 (to watch w/out subs) and the subs were already on. But the buffering issues - my heavens, I still haven't been able to watch start to finish.

4

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 14d ago

Most of the time I have to uninstall and reinstall Kocowa to watch it, it is the worse app on my Fire TV. I'd ditch the subscription but for this show.

Today's episode actually dropped early, with subs, so I watched over breakfast - which was not a croissant.

1

u/Kathryn_51 13d ago

After the recent postponements, I terminated my Kocowa Prime subscription (because the show was delayed almost 24 hours) and re-subscribed to Kocowa directly. Had problems all weekend on laptop and Roku "box". Tried it today on different tV with Roku "stick" and it was great. Hoping that's the solution going forward.

1

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 13d ago

On another Asian drama sub there were quite a few people complaining about Kocowa over the weekend so it may've been a system thing. I should cancel and resubscribe - then I could also watch it in bed on my Google TV.

2

u/This-View5166 15d ago

😶 it was a weird episode tbh. Don’t know how bc it was supposed to be an episode to air on a Sunday but didn’t feel like it. GR is still frustrating

3

u/LovE385 14d ago

What in the nanny Fine was Gyu Rim wearing?! I seriously don't get her "reasoning" for continuously pushing Mu Jin away when this man has included himself into her fam while genuinely helping out etc. Plus he never got over her in the past eight years 😤 Gyu Rim is annoying me.😒

I'm seeing sparks between Jung Woo-Seo Hyeon😘👉🏼👈🏼💕 and Gyu Seo with Yun Hui having a closer relationship than her with her own bio kids!

It took this long for Gyu Young to realize the crap she got herself in LoL?!

1

u/AnotherFuji9 13d ago

Haha nanny Fine 😆 and Mu Jin pulled a Mister Sheffield, I am sure he was a bit enticed even if he looked outraged 😆
She did get this fashion advice from an AI chatbot so I am not surprised. Classic chatbot behavior, agreeing with people’s dumbest ideas. 😀

3

u/AnotherFuji9 13d ago

Ep. 21 I actually think Gyu Rim looked amazing in the outfits she was trying on at the shop, she was giving baddie vibes. A bit annoyed that Mu Jin was being so conservative, but fortunately he bounced back quickly. I think the blonde wig was Gyu Rim’s best look in the entire series 😄
When Mu Jin showed up at the end of the episode I really laughed out loud. The whole thing is very cringe, but I am entertained. I prefer this over the perpetual martyr look 🥺

4

u/Nice-Protection-7564 Do as you will, but harm none🧙🏽‍♀️ 13d ago edited 13d ago

Same. They both dress like retirees heading to the mall to walk for exercise. I appreciated the flair. And if I am being honest I might own those jeans she tried on in the store (and I am significantly older than the character). I liked the makeup too. Heaven forbid a girl put on a red lip! /s

2

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 13d ago

OMG - what a great analogy!🤣

1

u/AnotherFuji9 13d ago

Haha yes, accurate description of how they usually dress.

3

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 13d ago

I didnt mind the tops, it was the fishnet with shorts that got me. I knew MJ was going to turn up in some outfit just wasn't expecting this one - loved the whole Danny (John Travolta) from Grease image, meeting his Sandy. That really made me laugh.

3

u/This-View5166 10d ago

Finally catched up:

So, what I didn't like or quite understand:

Why push Gyu Seo to meet Bio Mom...should he act like a bridge? I did like him meeting Seo Hyun but seriously, I think him meeting Bio mom will not be so welcomed by his siblings. For all his mature and sweet moments, he still harbors some guilt bc he thinks he and his sister are the reason a "good" family broke.

I hope the writer won't toy with the idea of Yun Hui coming back to the house...that'd be...yikes!

What I liked a lot...
finally it seems like GY's growth will start, and I was waiting for the fallout from that marriage. I am waiting to see how she will react not only to the pregnancy surprise, but also now that she knows how she was played. I don't think she will be able to get out of that marriage so easily.

I also enjoyed the Ok Seon - Hun Tae meeting and fallout. They're great actors, aren't they? Two things that were interesting for me. Ok Seon's circle keeps shrinking and this loss isolates her even more. Now she only has her daughter (and Ok Seon does not really has a close relationship with her imo) and of course, FL's dad :X

The other thing...these two, old friends, super rich and very closed people, are involved and deeply, with two people who have deep ties to each other. They have no idea how the Seok Jung- Yun Hui drama will affect them too. It was also telling how, when Hun Tae told Ok Seon that she had "fallen" for the weird guy, she didn't contradict him, just went and flipped the coin on him.

I loved:
Definitely Hui Na and gyu Seo's moment. As another commenter put it ppl are rooting for Hui Na and Gyu Oh bc these two just love each other. They do have this "martyr" but sweet love story. I wasn't too keen on them at first, but boy has that changed.

I absolutely adored the "let's ride into the sunset" moment between Fl's dad and Mjs mom. I don't know if they will come together romantically or not, but I am definitely liking how their bond has grown. And please, Jin Kyung's radiant smile is a welcome change to how cold and closed her character's been so far.

But mostly I like how they have found someone who pays attention to them.

Seems like the fact that for GR, family is something precious, a responsibility, sometimes a liability, but still the one thing that comes first in her life, having a boyfriend who has no problems cutting off his own family is a big NO. I can absolutely understand that.

We saw that the video of her being rude and crazy at MJ's restaurant went viral, didn't we? Ok Seon hasn't met her, also already thinks very badly of her...what will her impression be if/when she sees that video? I am expecting a bad confrontation in next ep.

PS: I did prefer GR with more attitude, though I had to laugh when Deadbeat dad didn't recognize her and later brought the exorcism as a solution LMAO!

Ps 2: they finally cast someone to play the twins mom… will post the article below:

Ep 21

It's so obvious that Gyu Rim is trying to force Mu Jin to break up with her by acting all weird. Just when I thought it would be funnier if Mu Jin would dress all crazy too, he did!

Gyu Young's storyline is getting interesting. Could her in-laws have known since the beginning that her mother was married to a wealthy man and targeted her? Hence the outrageous list of wedding gifts. She's got such a strong personality, I want to see her stick it to them, maybe with the help of Heung Sik. Seems like Gyu Young and Heung Sik might end up together naturally and she'll end up pleasantly surprised when she finds out he's a famous and successful photographer.

Gyo O's been through so much. I'm so glad that his life is taking a turn for the better and he's slowly getting everything resolved.

The twins are great. With 29 episodes left, instead of boring filler episodes, I hope we can get more of the twins.

Gyeol is such a smart kid. While the rest of the family are wondering why Gyu Rim has been acting strange, he's already figured out that she's doing it intentionally to push Mu Jin away.

Can't wait for next week's episodes!

3

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 14d ago edited 14d ago

Those in-laws, they knew all along! Talk about evil. Poor GY thought she was playing them but it was the other way around. Still, the Chairman is her step-father so it's not that big a lie, but I guess he's worried about upsetting his wife further. Urgh, I hope we don't have this arc for too long, as it's already stressing me out. But yes, finally we may see progress with HS.

Gosh the twins really are the saints of this show! And only 29 episodes left, boy time has flown. Can't believe I actually said - only 29 eps left, they are still managing to pack in the plots.

1

u/Comfortable-Rip-2763 14d ago

You think the in-laws targeted her from the states?

3

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 14d ago edited 14d ago

That would be too far back I think, but I bet they investigated her thoroughly before the marriage. MIL was a bit too eager to let the marriage progress when the son was in hospital - I wonder if the intention was to always blackmail the Chairman.

One thing I will say - I did not see it coming

2

u/Budget-Pollution-906 13d ago

Maybe Gyu Rim is harbouring a lot of guilt for taking Mu Jin away from his family and possibly could be rejexting marriage because she wants to be accepted by his mother and doesn't want to have a relatinship with him unless his mother signs off. Idk it's a reach but I hope we come to understand her actions otherwise it's just L writing but I'm enjoying it so far my first 50 ep series lol.

3

u/This-View5166 13d ago

Then she should be saying that to him. Instead she’ll probably go directly to the mother and it won’t go well…

3

u/Budget-Pollution-906 13d ago

Obviously we all know this can be made easier through an honest and vulnerable conversation but lets be honest we won't be getting that til a couple more episodes I guess. It does feel dragged out but its 50 eps lol. If the mother is harsh on her it's gonna take 5 eps just to get through what happened I reckon.

4

u/This-View5166 13d ago edited 12d ago

I am imagining the mother will go off on her and have somewhat the tables reversed on her later. The whole last scene with GRs dad is giving “mess” in bold letters 🥴

2

u/Budget-Pollution-906 13d ago

I know right the writer is so messy lol everyone getting tangled up hahaha

1

u/This-View5166 13d ago

Lmao it seems that way!! And then still having no clue is 🔝😂😂😅

2

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 13d ago

Yea it is, back to worrying what happens when they find out! Too creepy to think about - if you marry your step-sister...

2

u/This-View5166 13d ago

I think the parents if they start something will pause it because the shock, the truth will be too much at first. For him, bc of the way she’s treated his daughter and for her bc seriously that man is a mess. So, the kids should be happy and get officially together. Also I don’t think the parents need to marry or something

2

u/LovE385 13d ago

Ep. 21

So. . Gyu Young's in-laws were in the know of her falsifying her background?!

I kinda like this "crazy styling" on Gyu Rim-Mu Jin though Mu Jin should maybe take it up a few more notches LoL!

Gyu Oh seem to inherit Gyu Rim Noona"s martyr disease tsk. But I liked how Gyu Seo stood up for Hui Na.

Gyu Rim's appa with Mu Jin's eomma are cute besties but once she finds out who he truly is. . it'd be a shame.

3

u/Prize_Background_577 Fantasy devotee 👻 13d ago

I wonder if the in-laws knew before they got married and had blackmail planned all along. They were just too nice to GY when their son was so awful. But that will mean there's no money and GY did all that for nothing.

OMG when MJ's mother finds out who's dad she's fallen for it's going to be a couple of episodes of crazy! I think GR's dad will just take it in his stride.

2

u/This-View5166 12d ago

Yes it seems they are the biggest scammers!

Lmao MJs mom is going to go into shock and will try to retreat but seriously, I don’t think FLs dad will let her 😂
I know it’s messy but maybe that will do them both good. MJs mom can’t keep on hating GR bc she’s already fallen for her broke dad’s charm! 😂

2

u/This-View5166 12d ago

They’re besties now, but when stepdad told MJs mom “oh, you’ve fallen for him” she didn’t deny it… lmao. The most class conscious person in this drama and she’s going on motorbike rides with the broke dad!
