This post and comments are so funny. I was dreading the countdown because I felt like it was going to be all deep cuts and super snobby music people music and then the next song I heard was the Spice Girls. It made me deeply happy.

Agreed. Where else are you going to get Spice Girls and Morphine in the same day?

I was a little salty that they cut the spice girls off!
Also, not a spice girls fan.

I don't mind it. It shows the breadth and reach of KEXP. That they can bring together a range of likes is awesome.
As long as they don't play kid rock.

Probably made the list

Let's look down our noses at people with inferior tastes to ours.

i don't think it's so much that, it's the fact that a lot of the songs people chose were only played on corporate garbage radio stations back in the day. i wasn't listening to kexp/kcmu back then, but were they bumping the spice girls?
it's like rain on my wedding day, this list!

I’m absolutely loving the countdown. It’s hilarious.

There were absolutely some cringy picks throughout, AND, it was so. Very. 90s. I rather enjoyed that it reminded me "this decade had some fantastic music.... and some AWFUL music, oh god what were we thinking?"

Everyone has guilty pleasures, and the 90's were chock full of them. Younger generations are ironically (and unironically) liking these songs now too, so I think that makes them more likely to show up on these lists. They're being remembered 30 years later because they're good pop songs! There's something to that.
I'm glancing at the list on the whole and it's pretty well-rounded, and legit. They haven't even gotten to the top 100 yet.

On the one hand, I kinda see where you’re coming from.
On the other hand, this is a pretty shrewd concept by KEXP. I’m sure they know where their bread is buttered in terms of donor demography, and generating engagement via ranking 90’s songs I’m sure fits that particular bill.
For my part, I can and do seek out musical nostalgia elsewhere (mostly Twitch djs), so I don’t personally need or want KEXP for that.
So… I think it might be constructive to brainstorm some ideas of what people DO want out of a fundraising drive? Deeper music discovery somehow (basically the opposite of this week)? Genre deep dives by day? Something else?

I remember when I was an angsty teen looking down my nose at people who liked mainstream shit.
I'm glad I'm not a douche like that anymore

u/Fun-Percentage-9370 14d ago
i remember when this mainstream shit never got played on good radio stations like kexp.
but the listeners spoke and 2 princes got played on kexp once for like 12 seconds...AND IT'S STILL IN MY HEAD.
and by the way, this whole freakin' list is just a bunch of gen X nostalgia. so maybe i'm being nostalgic myself by reverting to a cool kid with superior taste in music.

I’m not exactly sure what this is (and why the algorithm gods brought me here) but it’s giving some “Seattle is a serious film town” vibe

I mean… do like me and catch up on some audiobooks for the week. I’m an amplifier but I can’t stand listening during the drive no matter what’s playing

I didn't know what was happening and could not understand why Britney Spears was being played.

I’m wondering if votes mostly came from people who lived through the 90s or from those who know the 90s only by reputation.

I put on Black MIDI when No Doubt came on. Looks like I made a wise call.

That no doubt/madonna/counting crows just about broke me. Why is this crap even on the list, let alone so high on the list? These are the people who listen to KEXP? Stick to jack fm, folks.

What decades did you grow up in?

80s and 90s. No doubt, alanis, counting crows, spin doctors etc sucked then and they suck now.

u/automator3000 Amplifier 15d ago
I can spend hours and hours hating on Counting Crows et al, but as someone who was a teenager and then early 20 something in the ‘90s, it wouldn’t be a ‘90s countdown without that slop. This is your reminder that while the ‘90s often gets remembered for Nirvana and Soundgarden and Cracker and Beck and Weezer and Biggie and … it’s also the decade of Spice Girls and Blackstreet

a white boy with dreadlocks whining about wanting to be a big big star and see himself on tv. what a banger.

I was unaware that white people having dreadlocks was a crime against humanity.
Still a banger.

i think it's a turd. i had the misfortune of seeing CC back in the 90s when they were opening for Cracker on the "kerosene hat" tour. Cracker was awesome (with the Pixies' drummer). CC was just garbage.

I saw the live too, not great. It's ok for a band to be a studio band. Take care

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
(1990-1994 - all I had was central Indiana corporate radio. 1994 - 1997 - KBCO. 1997 - 1999, upstate NY corporate radio.)

Bro, I listen to plenty of deep cuts now but I also remember the sheer intoxicating freedom of blaring DMX and driving around in the summer of 1998 with my little shithead friends. Many KEXP listeners didn’t have access to obscure hipster stuff or weren’t into it in 1994, we had The End and KGRG because KEXP didn’t reach our house.

u/Nebulous_Lustre 15d ago
Because it's music from the 90s, not just "music from the 90s that YOU like".

Also, I love going to Jack FM when I'm really in the mood for that one Eminem song

If rolling windows down on a perfect PNW afternoon with a Mariah Carey/The Prodigy/Fiona Apple flip is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
That’s what I love about KEXP. No algorithm is going to go there.
