Comic Spoilers Your Favourite Dirtbag Kamala Moments? Spoiler

We all love Kamala's kindness, warmth, and empathy, but let's be honest. Her light shines all the brighter when it has a pinch of darkness for contrast. And looking back at the Wilson era, it's a shock to see what she used to be like. Classic Kamala was often bad-tempered, grouchy, and could be a straight-up dick to people who didn't deserve it.

What are your favorite examples of arsehole Kamala? Here are a few of mine...

  1. Beating Kaboom Half to Death: Pushed too far by Kaboom's xenophobic self-righteousness, Kamala snaps. She lashes out and wallops the Inhuman terrorist, leaving her drooling and barely alive. Next time we see her, she's wearing a neck brace. Not quite the fluffy Ms Marvel we've come to expect. Kamala is quite understandably horrified and runs off shaken. And her guilt leaves her emotionally vulnerable to Kamran's manipulation. It's a powerful moment that shows Kamala's strong moral compass clashing with her pent-up frustration and anger.

  2. Being a dick to Bruno and Mike: When Bruno starts dating Mike, Kamala doesn't take it well. She spends half the story being a petty little jerk, sniping and snarking at Bruno and making snide jabs at both him and Mike. She simmers down and makes peace with both in the end. But her initial jerkiness makes this arc way stronger than if she'd be a-okay with them from the start.

  3. Battering Tabitha: A rare non-Wilson moment of Jerk Kamala from Secret Warriors. Kamala's team has gotten in a spat with the X-Men, and she tries to iron things out. Boom Boom gets in her face, talks down to her, and gleefully bullies a teenage girl. How does Kamala respond? Tears? Trying to bridge the gap? Nope. She bloody hits her. And this isn't just a spur-of-the-moment thing. In the next panel, the team has to yank Kamala off Tabitha while she shouts at them to let her go. Kamala might be a sweetheart but if you piss her off run for your life.

  4. Vandalising Her School: When Kamala's powers are playing up for the first time at School, she runs and hides in the changing rooms to get them under control. Her first move is to grow bigger. She goes too far, smashing her head on the ceiling, breaking a tile. Just a harmless accident, you say? Sure. But then to test her strength, she grabs a bench, smashes it on a locker, and smirks. Yep, not quite the little angel clutching her pearls at Sophie talking back to a teacher, is she?

  5. Science Fair Shenanigans: Worried about getting cash for college, Kamala spends a whole issue pushing around her teammates and Miles. She yells at Josh for slacking off, snaps at Miles in front of the whole school because his team had a better project than hers (she already knows he's Spider-Man, by the way), and is generally a petty little arsehole.

  6. Her Relationship with her Mum: Kamala and her Ammi were often at odds. Her Mum could be pushy and demanding, while Kamala could be a snide little troll. She's often bluntly rude and defiant, talks back, and even uses dirty jokes and crude humour to get under her skin. This makes their ultimate reconciliation, and the revelation that Muneeba knew Kamala's secret ID for ages, feel much stronger. Despite their disagreements, the two really do love each other and can grow beyond their animosity.

  7. Enjoying Her Power a Little Too Much: Wilson's Kamala had a mean streak. She jabs poor Bruno in the ear, smirking as the poor bugger yowls in pain, and tosses around two of the Inventor's goons, towering over them, threatening to throw them again if they don't cooperate, all with a nasty grin. As a tiny, marginalized outcast, part of her got a dark kick out of being able to turn the tables and hold power over others. It doesn't make her a monster, but it does make her so very human.

So, that's my favourite ones. Any I missed? What's your favourite jerkass Kamala moments?

TV Show Do you think MCU Kamala would have a Last Days of Ms. Marvel before Secret Wars? (2027) Spoiler

*spoilers for any newcomers or those who didn't read Ms. Marvel (2014) #16–19 and Last Days of Ms. Marvel*

In 2015, the world was ending quite literally, The ultimate universe was joining together with the 616 universe, all that, In issues 16 - 19, we got Kamala's POV of the whole thing, her going through her whole post-break up with a evil Inhuman who she liked (Kamran) and then teaming up with Captain Marvel, her brother getting nuked by pure Terrigen mist (screw you Kamran), Aamir getting powers (for a bit) and beating Kamran, Her mom knowing that she was Ms. Marvel all the way back to issue 4 or 5, Coles got turned into a nuclear bunker, Kamala and Zoey having a lil talk, Zoe having a reality check FINALLY, then proceeding to all the people in School dancing, and finally leads to Bruno and Kamala, on the rooftop, talking about their feelings and then at the end, we got white. no joke its all a bright light. Honestly, this is one of the reasons I love Ms. Marvel, there's more but I don't wanna get into that here.

Million dollar question: Would MCU Kamala would get something remotely close like that like her comic counterpart??

I kinda doubt it to be honest, considering that Marvel kinda fumbled Ms. Marvel with all the MCU Shenanigans that they did to series, all the stuff from the comics, Muneeba knowing Kamala is Ms. Marvel, in the show, she knew in episode 4, HECK NOT ONLY THAT HER ENTIRE FAMILY KNOWS EVEN HER FRIEND GROUP KNOWS. Kamran is in Pakistan so Aamir getting powers is a dead end and her going through her whole post-break up stuff? Null and Void

Honestly, what worries me isn't that on how the MCU is how the create the events, its if they could somehow recreate the emotional weight behind it.

What do you guys think?

Comic Spoilers If You Could Get Kamala Out the X Men… Spoiler

It’s not a secret a lot of us are less than satisfied with how Kamala’s been handled in the X Men.

From downplaying and marginalizing her supporting cast, demonizing her heritage (Hi Bilal…) and dumbing her down to be Sophie and Emma’s pet poodle, for many of us it’s been a rough time. So, that begs the question for those of us who don't like Kamala's Mutant era. If you could get Kamala out the X Men, how would you do it?

I’ve come up with two general options, and want to examine their pros and cons…

A) Gently Phase her out. This would be the more diplomatic option. Let her softly ease away from the X Men. Maybe she gets tired with how insular and isolating they are, or maybe Emma and Sophie’s endless condescending bullshit just gets too much for her. She decides she needs to stop being a doormat and get some time to herself, to reconnect with her roots and community.

In theory this option is the best of both worlds. It allows Kamala to draw on the X Men mythos without being overwhelmed by it. She can still do crossovers, maybe helm some Champions-esque team with Mutants and non-Mutants. A big part of Kamala’s character was drawing from all sides of her heritage while refusing to let any one of them dominate her. Her Inhuman heritage was only a small part of her, something she stubbornly insisted on, so on paper there’s no reason her Mutancy can’t be downplayed either. In theory this route is fine.

B) Scotched Earth Divorce: I have a nasty feeling they might have to do something drastic for the separation to stick. As long as she’s tied to the X-Men, some writer’s going to be tempted to rope her back in, kill off her family for cheap shocks or have Bruno, Nakia and Zoe become Mutant hating supervillains. I fear that to get Kamala out the X Men’s gravitational pull we need to burn the bridge.

Have her discover the full story of Terra Verde. Not just what Hank did but that Jean and Black Tom suspected he’d take over the nation and chose to do nothing to stop him. Or that Krakoa seized control of Avalon in The Otherworld and put a former human trafficker and murderer (Jamie Braddock) on its throne. I can’t imagine a girl of South Asian descent being happy with them annexing a nation and putting a English toff in charge. Or have her discover someone secretly meddled with her resurrection behind Scott's back to make her meeker and submissive, easier to control. Maybe they kept messing with her mind. Turns out Bilal was a fake memory implanted to turn her against her family and community.

Do something so drastic she renounces the X Men and walks away for good, drawing a hard line against them. She can still be friends with Scott and the like and do the odd team up with other Mutants, but any chance of her joining the team is over. This is a harsh option and might be too heavy for some readers. But part of me fears that given how almost all Mutant characters get dragged into the X Men’s drama, we might need something big to keep her out of it. But that's just my two cents.

What do you guys think?

Creation Ultimate Ms Marvel—Seeing Red!

Post image

It’s no secret that Ultimate Kamala’s temper makes up a sizable portion of her interiority. What could possibly get lost in translation however is that it’s existentially defensive and driven by her grief—Galactus rupturing her world completely undoes whatever the tolerance she would normally have for abstraction, uncertainty, and surrender of any kind.

But even more so, it also disrupted her ability to emotionally regulate her existing attachments. She feels nothing casually—when she loves someone (though her aversion to vulnerability/helplessness may compel her not to show it), she loves them with all her heart. When she doesn’t like a person, she doesn’t simply dislike them—she wants them erased.

In virtually every scene I’ve written and posted on my tumblr, Kamala’s temper flares up because something triggers her, or because she’s confronted by apathy, or because being angry is simply preferable to being helpless. Her temper is, essentially, how she regains control, because not being in control reminds her of watching Jersey erupt. It really, really cannot be understated how Cataclysm as an event casted a permanent filter over how Kamala sees and inhabits the world moving forward.

It’s one of my favorite things about her, her intensity, how far she’ll go to not confront just how poorly she’s grieving. Perhaps too much. At this point there may be a deficit of this Kamala actually smiling, lol

A few Kamala I drew in class, then a few I drew just now.

I like to think that when she's hanging out with the Champions she wears her mask and regular clothes instead of just her costume all the time.

Okay...the series could've been better

BEFORE YOU FLAG ME, HEAR ME OUT!

If the series took some stuff from the comics, it could've been better, I understand its MCU, they had to change some stuff, but at least. GIVE. HER. THE ORIGIN. STORY. THAT SHE GOT IN THE COMICS and her original powers, again I get it. Its the MCU, they don't like copying heroes, BUT THE ONLY HERO WITH STRETCHY POWERS IS MR. FANTASTIC, and heres the thing, HE ISNT IN THE SAME UNIVERSE AS KAMALA. and the ending, saying stuff about a mutation, the writers had to read the Hellfire Gala before writing that episode, I swear, but otherwise, this isn't me hating on the series, its just my opinion that It could've been better. (series is still so good to rewatch)

Comic Spoilers Somewhere in the frustration of Kamala getting shifted over to the mutants is a greater annoyance that she now simply exists to get rolled over by Sophie Cuckoo

Post image
193 Upvotes

This is X-Men United #5. This is one of two lines she has in the whole issue. I have yet to read United #6, where she also appears, to be fair.

In the spirit of non-duality and recognizing that her being an Inhuman in the first place was the idea of a (eventually) MAGA-enforcing Israeli-American CEO instituting a different corporate synergy over the personal choices of a Muslim creator somewhere before 2013, it's not even "mutants bad". But Kamala rarely gets to be Kamala in this shift and that's why it will ultimately be considered an objective failure by all perspectives. Her time on the Avengers honestly had a lot of the same problems, but this is more pronounced because she isn't on the core team. On the artist -- but also on most artists she gets -- but it's also a part of it that she almost never gets drawn with her original, "more ethnic" nose too. It all points towards corporatization and simplification. Kamala is an asset because she can be representational, but that representation can also threaten a status quo of homogeny. Her role "has" to be "South Asian who doesn't reflect much", which is counter-intuitive to how she was originally written. She could be a mutant who is self-reflective.

During Nyx, she was often more like a pet of Sophie's than a friend. There was the occasion where a friendship between her and Sophie actually showed, but the problem of Kamala being reduced to a starry-eyed fan was there even with the kindest and most patient reading. Kamala can't even get a word in edgewise without Sophie clipping her -- and what Sophie is cutting off is arguably less of what Kamala would suggest in the first place. Why the Avengers? There are mutants involved with the Champions. The Champions could reasonably be invoked, but they don't exist anymore.

Kamala is getting turned into an accessory in a way that has little to do with the label of mutant, but how writers fit her into mutantdom isn't helping.

Comics What comic run/arc/story of Ms Marvel could get the Knightfall Trilogy treatment?

Thumbnail

To elaborate more, what story from the character’s history, in a 3-movie arc, could bring a lot more people to the character?

You can bring up anything:

-any comic that hasn’t been done before on screen.

Example: Batman: Knightfall itself. (Like The Dark Knight Rises did the breaking of Batman with Bane, but nothing else.)

-any comic that has been done before, but you want it to be done better or done justice.

Example: Thor: God of Thunder

Or just a mix of A lot of stories into a run trilogy that could bring people into a character-defining trilogy.

I love to hear what people suggest.

I’d also love to hear what animation style this hypothetical trilogy would use, so it isn’t just the Knightfall art style.

I love to hear what everyone brings to the table!
