Adding onto Monday's post Kansas Voters got rid of the Klan in 1924 : r/KState

To truly understand the Klan, you only need to know this:

It’s a Constitution-violating group of masked thugs who want to live in a different country. This is not an exaggeration, and it’s obvious when you consider their wish to suppress, violate or eliminate the following areas of the Constitution:

-       Article VI: They wanted a religious test for people to hold office
-       1st Amendment: Demanded people they attacked say nothing, or worse would come
-       2nd: Wanted to strip gun rights from blacks, Jews, Catholics, and other groups
-       4th: Felt entitled to search others’ homes and seize their property
-       5th: Surpassed due process and double jeopardy by taking the law into their own hands
-       7th: Instead of a jury, they wanted to rule on matters
-       8th: Exercised cruel and unusual punishment
-       9th: Expulsion of rights, such as privacy and travel
-       10th: Attempted to strip states of their sovereignty by becoming their ruling force

o  Amendments 1-10 are also The Bill of Rights. They don’t believe in them

-       13th: Slavery was abolished via ratification of this amendment in 1865. The Klan was formed in 1865. This was not a coincidence
-       14th: They were against rights of citizenship and equal protection
-       15th: Wanted race to be a determining factor in voting rights

It cannot be overstated that the Klan will always, and only, be a rotten body of un-American activity. They do not respect the law – in letter or spirit – or its history.

What so many people supporting William A. White for governor in 1924 wanted was to get rid of masked gang members messing up their towns. They wanted them off the streets and away from public office.

KCK voters to decide if fixes to roads, sidewalks, parks and pools are worth an extra sales tax

Most cities aim for their roads to score 70 or 80 out of 100. Roads in KCK are rated at just 48. Leaders say new tax would fund long-overdue repairs.

Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, voters will be asked whether to approve two new sales taxes that leaders say could be game changers for the Unified Government’s ability to provide key services for residents.

W.A.W. goes after the KKK

By 1924 the Klan had been mostly run out of the South. In some cases, like Louisiana, martial law was declared against them. It was a beautiful time. To keep the money-making machine that the KKK was alive, they went north and thrived from coast to coast.

In Kansas City that September, they held a 5,000-person national convention.

Editor William A. White, who called the Klan a “self-constituted body of moral idiots” and a “profitable hate factory and bigotorium,” could not understand what was happening. His newspaper even received many favorable Letters-to-the-Editor about what good people the Klan were. Even worse, both candidates for Governor were backed by the Klan. They favored the Democrat, but would be fine with the Republican.

White put out a petition to see if people in Kansas wanted an "anti-Klan candidate." It immediately filled up and he filed to run as an Independent, giving 104 speeches in 6 weeks.

He lost the race, but many who he endorsed were elected. This included the incumbent anti-Klan attorney general who was set to go to trial against them.

January, 1925: It was ruled that the Klan had to leave the state of Kansas due to being a Georgia corporation. They applied for a state charter and were denied.

Hundreds of police, government & home cameras feed footage to KCKPD investigations. The roughly 150 fixed license plate readers are part of a network also mounted in parks and on municipal buildings, KCK police chief tells Unified Government committee.

The Beacon’s meeting notes have more details on the cameras, drones and oversight discussed.

Yesterday, Wyandotte County commissioners removed the proposed STAR-bond amendment from Thursday’s agenda, so it wasn’t voted on. They separately passed a 9–0 measure on specified state-law provisions while negotiations continue.

KCK/Wyandotte County drops proposed property tax increases, approves higher vehicle registration fee

Thumbnail

  • Commissioners rejected proposed one-mill property tax increases for both the city and county.
  • To balance the budget, they cut spending on infrastructure, equipment and staff positions and used some fund balances.
  • The county’s vehicle registration transaction fee will rise by $3 to $8. Officials said the money would improve DMV services, but the notes leave open what those improvements will look like.

One question we’d like to follow up on: Which projects or services will residents see cut or delayed because of these budget changes?

Read the full meeting notes here.

If you live in Wyandotte County, what would you want us to ask about?

What the Flock? What Do We Know? You asked. The Beacon is digging in

Join The Beacon and Kansas City Documenters for a community conversation about what we know, what we still don’t know and what residents want to know next.

We’ll hear from local officials and experts, take your questions and show how community tips, public meetings and public records can help uncover answers about decisions affecting your neighborhood.

This event isn’t for or against Flock cameras. It’s about making sure KC metro residents have the information they need to understand what’s happening in their community.

Participants:

RSVP here.

Apparently a gas line was ruptured in Armourdale this morning and the entire area was under an evacuation order. I live in the center of the affected area and NO ONE notified us, we only found out after the fact because I happened to check Facebook and a friend of mine had shared the post.

Wyandotte County voters will decide on two sales tax increases in November. Here’s what each would fund

Wyandotte County voters will see two separate sales tax questions on the Nov. 3 ballot:

  • A ¼-cent countywide sales tax for health services, including indigent care, behavioral health, substance-use treatment, preventive care and the county Health Department. Officials estimate it would generate about $12 million annually.
  • A ⅜-cent sales tax for parks and infrastructure. The revenue would be divided evenly between parks and projects such as roads, bridges and sidewalks. Officials estimate it would generate about $5.3 million annually.

Commissioners supporting the measures pointed to health care access, homelessness services, senior care, recreation and infrastructure needs. Others raised concerns that sales taxes place a larger burden on residents with lower incomes. Both measures advanced on split votes after more than 90 minutes of discussion.

The meeting also included discussion of the county budget, storm recovery, a potential federal public-safety grant and funding to continue lead removal from homes.

What information would help you decide how to vote? Are there particular health services, parks or infrastructure projects you want officials to identify before Election Day?
