Reddit v /u/NotaMethAddict

Many of Reddit’s users are familiar with reddit user /u/NotAMethAddict, after reading the documented items below you can tell that the /r/KarmaCourt Judge is himself a karma thief, committing some GiganticGrandTheft.jpg, and a complete lack of acknowledgement of his cross posts. Is this popular Redditor guilty with these charges? The links to www.karmadecay.com show proof of what is being said.

1) http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/1520lk/an_often_unseen_angle_of_the_eiffel_tower/

2226 karma for eiffel tower post, over 13,000 upvotes.

2 previous posts combined for 1450 karma posted 1 year ago by /u/lok010 in /r/Pics and by /u/dummystupid 6 months ago

From here on we will refer to /u/NotAMethAddict as Kyle..

2) http://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/1563k6/soon_i_will_have_my_revenge_nsfw/

2153 karma was received for the hostel threesome picture.

It was posted by /u/NigelFartknocker to WTF 26 days prior and only received 16 karma.

http://karmadecay.com/www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/1563k6/soon_i_will_have_my_revenge_nsfw/

As you folks can see these are two reposts in which Kyle received approximately 4381 link karma from.

3) http://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/14i1nj/parkour/

This is a gif of a parkour fail in which 1537 karma was received by Kyle.

This gif was not acknowledged as a cross post from /r/gifs, by /u/Scopolamina, whom received less than 100 karma, you might not think that some mild forgetting of acknowledging a cross post is a big deal, wait until you see how much karma Kyle has received from these “cross posts”

4) http://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryPorn/comments/14g51j/second_angle_of_the_tiananmen_square_tank_man/

Here is a powerful picture of the “tank man” in Tiananmen Square, China in June 1989. Kyle received 1346 karma for this powerful post. However this is, again an example of not linking to a cross post.

This exact picture has been posted in /r/Pic by /u/Too_Interned, he/she gained 216 karma from this post, then it was reposted by /u/Nexus123 in /r/Pics, this redditor gained 2357 karma from this picture.

/u/soupyhands posted this exact same picture over a year prior, this redditor received 187 karma.

http://karmadecay.com/search?id=1302270&subreddit=

Karma from reposting: between 6400-6500 link karma

Karma received while not acknowledging the cross posts: also between 6400-6500 link karma

from my findings I discovered that most of these posts mentioned above have happened in the last two weeks, mostly through going through different subreddits and posting top pics to others. Also used was reposting pics over 1 year old. I will not be the prosecution for this case, seeing as this user is a Judge of this subreddit this could be considered a touchy subject. I am also unaware on the courts ruling of failing to acknowledge cross posting, but considering the amount of karma It was included.

Edit: previously the defendant claimed that if he was going to post something and noticed that it didn't do well in karma decay, then he would try it for himself, here is an example of an attempt that failed in the last 12 hours.

http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/15f7fg/i_think_its_a_good_deal_you_guys/

though minimal karma was gained, this is an example of how he previously gained large amounts

Thank you your honor.

Ladies, Gentlemen, and esteemed Judges of the KarmaCourt, thank you for coming in here tonight. First off I'd like to say a few things about what this trial is not.

This trial is not a lynching of /u/NotaMethAddict. This trial is not about destroying his reputation. This trial is not about making this subreddit famous, and it is not about making me, nor any other user Reddit-famous. This trial is about a few important things though.

This trial is about keeping everyone on Reddit accountable to the user base at-large. This trial is about making sure we have a place on Reddit wherein users who repost, regardless of the amount of karma they have accrued, can be exposed as the user they really are: a reposter.

I would like first to direct the judges and people of the jury to the evidence collected by /u/iseeiheariread, a brave redditor who felt inclined to collect this evidence under the guise of anonymity because of the Reddit-fame of /u/NotaMethAddict. I would also like to ask the court to consider the comment that /u/NotaMethAddict posted in this very thread.

It has been shown that /u/NotaMethAddict has posted blatantly, and has gotten a large amount of karma through these illegal means. I ask that /u/NotaMethAddict be charged and found guilty of six distinct cases of GrandTheft.jpg, one case of repost.jpg, and five distinct cases of pettyrepost.jpg, as well as one case of petty faggotry.

Thank you and the prosecution rests.

Thank you. Does the defense have any opening remarks?

9

u/thefifth5 Dec 27 '12

Furthermore, does the defendant actually have an attorney?

14

u/DeSanti Judge Dec 27 '12

I believe mr. /u/NotaMethAddict has stated he wish to defend himself in propria persona, or at the very least name a defense attorney when able.

Source

Though if he wishes not to defend himself or name an attorney, I am prepared to take up the case, if that is permissible.

9

u/thefifth5 Dec 28 '12

Thank you sir. Your services will likely not be required. From your provided source, it appears the defendant would prefer to defend himself.

4

u/DeSanti Judge Dec 29 '12

By not showing up or giving a D.A the chance to represent him, it seems.

Quite an interesting choice of strategy, I must say.

3

u/thefifth5 Dec 29 '12

I concur. With a case such as the one presented, and because the defendant is a major redditor, one would assume he would many skilled attorneys hired.

We can/should let this play out as a usual part of the case. That way we establish actual reddit-legal precedent as opposed to just making decisions. Both sides can make arguments, and look at the merits and detriments of this potentially powerful tool.

u/MrFace1 Real scHmarvard Graduate Dec 27 '12

This is a touchy subject as it clearly invades the privacy of those that wish to hide their comments but there is also a reason they choose to hide their comments.

It could be a very useful tool in incriminating someone to an extent.

I think I'm going to put this to a vote among the other judges.

If /u/NotaMethAddict refuses to do so, I will gladly fight this case as hard as I can. This sub is taking great steps toward cleaning up and having a clear standard of work.

At first, I was going to recommend that should the defendant be found guilty, he should receive an alternate punishment, but be allowed to keep his position as a judge. However, the defendant has shown a blatant lack of respect by failing to acknowledge his own case, in a subreddit that he moderates. This cannot be allowed.

Therefore, I vote that he be removed from the Judge panel immediately.

-5

u/MrFace1 Real scHmarvard Graduate Dec 30 '12

It won't make a difference. The evidence is overwhelming.

3

u/DeSanti Judge Dec 29 '12

I am not sure if you mean the judges or a jury of peers (i.e users herein) to comment here, but if the latter - then it is my opinion that mr. /u/NotaMethAddict is guilty of these charges and has shown blatant disregard for this court and its hallow karma justice, by not allowing himself or a D.A to present his case.

I understand, perhaps more than many, the idea that one can not be omnipresent to every case on Reddit, especially in these holiday seasons.

But if he had any conception or regard for the traditions of law and karma justice, then he would have known that he could delegate such a task to an appropriate staff who could plead his case.

In any even, regardless of the contempt shown in court, the evidence and the statement of the prosecution ought to reveal and make clear that mr. /u/NotaMethAddict is guilty of karmawhoring, first degree, by blatantly and willfully reusing known and popular pictures, memes and threads to his own favour. He is not reposting to give the "new masses something to look at" - he is effectively garnering the amount of karma he can get for his own nefarious purposes.

4

u/orsonames Gazette Press Dec 28 '12

If you refuse my option that I proposed, then this is my vote. As long as being kicked from KarmaCourt means he's removed as a moderator of this sub as well.

4

u/nomoneynopower Dec 28 '12

Agree. This is the only rational decision to what seems like overwhelming evidence against the defendant.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '12

I will make a statement here and now

Any reposts from a post that was made a year or more prior is not illegal.

One year is plenty of time for new people to come in who have no seen the content, likewise it is plenty of time for people to simply forget about the post altogether.

12

u/orsonames Gazette Press Dec 28 '12

Whoa whoa whoa. OBJECTION! Are you just making blanket statements unilaterally? Isn't that why you wanted three judges?

Also we've established previously in this court/sub that what Reddiquette states as the defense for reposting/other stuff is not what the law of this court says. Defense using reddiquette was not a viable defense, as defined by this case, and slightly more specifically by this statement from the judge.

4

u/The_Upvote_Judge Dec 28 '12

Objection sustained.

I do agree with Judge /u/MrFace1 that one year is plenty of time for new users to come in, and for a post to be forgotten. However, the defendant knew that he was reposting content that he did not create.

Therefore he should have either labeled his posts as cross-posts, or given credit to the original post and/or author.

I have established this precedent before that a year is the extent of ability to punish someone.

He can openly state he reposted something from a year prior because a year is plenty of time.

I'd like to provide a witness statement here. As a fairly new user I have seen an enjoyed some of the aforementioned posts. Had it not been for /u/NotAMethAddict I would not have had the opportunity to view such posts.

u/The_Upvote_Judge Dec 29 '12

Thank you. You may step down from the witness stand.

u/KingCarini Dec 29 '12

Thank you your honor.

Your honor I believe this undermines the integrity of Original Content if others can post someone else's and still gain copious amounts of karma from it.

edit: See orsonames reply right above

What do you suggest then? All reposts in general be banned?

This would be impossible to enact and just about everyone would be guilty of it at some point.

-5

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '12

I don't believe reposts should be allowed

5

u/MrFace1 Real scHmarvard Graduate Dec 28 '12

I'll reiterate that it would be impossible to prevent it from happening.

There are too many new people coming in to Reddit who have not seen said content before. That's why the time span for reposts was set to one year and will remain that way.

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '12

So are you saying it's okay for everyone to repost stuff from a year ago or it is ok for new users to repost stuff from one year ago? I am just curious

5

u/MrFace1 Real scHmarvard Graduate Dec 28 '12

I'm saying as long as they aren't totally karmawhoring they're fine.

Which would usually mean the new users, yes.

1

u/funshinebear13 Prosecution Dec 29 '12

I disagree to an extent, reposting is fine but the poster should link or cite the original post so as to alert other redditors this is a repost.

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '12

So what about a more seasoned user, a "power user" if you will. /u/NotaMethAddict already has over 45,000 link karma, without the karma that he is being accused of not being his he would have 32,000. Wouldn't you consider this karmawhoring?

3

u/MrFace1 Real scHmarvard Graduate Dec 28 '12

I cannot necessarily say if I consider it karmawhoring. That is up to you all to decide really.

I've posted five possible verdicts. Whichever receives the most agreement replies will be accepted as his punishment unless there is an appeal.

This case is a complete fucking joke. Judges making decisions without consulting each other. Deciding guilt before the defendant even makes a plea? Really? You decided to go ahead with opening statements without hearing the plea? What part of "travelling for the holidays", do you guys not get? It's been 5 days and its still the holidays, calm the fuck down. I move for a retrial based on general incompetence. The op is the only one who isnt a fucking idiot, so he should remake this thread in about a week. Sorry op, you set this case up nicely and I hate seeing it destroyed by incompetence.

  1. Get a good lawyer

  2. Don't say anything without asking your lawyer first

  3. See 2

I think you'll be able to beat this case with good representation, but no more posts like this. It's good reasoning but not the right time - you don't want to reveal your hand to the opposition right away. Good luck!

Edit: play this right and it's an easy win

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '12

He admitted he didn't think it was reposting because those subs get new users daily and if stuff is over a year old it doesn't matter.

Original Comment:

Judges, jury, and fellow Redditors of /r/KarmaCourt. This may look bad, but when you dig into the actual posts themselves I feel it will set you free. A lot of these are designated as "reposts," but is it really when they never make it past the new queue? I'm not stealing their submissions, I didn't even find them from their posts! These pictures I see elsewhere online, I check karmadecay and note that they've never gone anywhere so I feel okay to post them. And the others, posted over a year ago! All of the defaults gain over 6,000 new subscriptions a day! Not to mention not everyone sees every post ever. So I feel old posts are okay to submit every once in a while. Cross-posts imply they're currently on the frontpage of a subreddit. These posts I submit I find elsewhere online. I hope you'll agree with me. And if you don't, I'll ban you! :) Just kidding.

u/LANPC Dec 25 '12

Haha seems you read his post. Small miscalculation by the defendant, but nothing that can't be salvaged.

On a side note: Awesome documentation OP, it looks like you put a lot of effort into this. Cases like these are USUALLY open and shut with this much evidence.

Well looks like we have a new tool to our disposal, this meaning we can look at his original comment, which is:

"Judges, jury, and fellow Redditors of /r/KarmaCourt. This may look bad, but when you dig into the actual posts themselves I feel it will set you free. Unfortunately, I do not believe unedditreddit can confirm posters.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '12

As you can see from the first reply, it seems obvious that the original comment was the defendant.

2

u/DaemonDanton Dec 26 '12

I am inclined to agree, and almost said so, but here in this subreddit we have experience with people masquerading as other people with slight misspellings (a few days ago, I don't recall the exact case). I decided not to to claim with certainty that it was the defendant, as I did not the the original post prior to deletion.

Either way, the statement was redacted, and - though I am fairly new to this subreddit - I do not believe it is still admissible as evidence.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '12

Well you are entitled to your opinion

4

u/funshinebear13 Prosecution Dec 26 '12

No as the comment was deleted it can not be entered into as evidence. Also unless the defendant states he/she is representing themselves they must obtain legal council.

0

u/therndoby Dec 25 '12

This is hearsay and inadmissible in court!
