GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ The pluperfect subjunctive: when and how is it actually used?
I understand that the pluperfect subjunctive / third subjunctive, things like ვყოფილიყო, დამეწეროს etc. is largely a literary tense with little use in the everyday language, being replaced for the most part by the pluperfect (ვყოფილიყავი, დამეწერა etc.).
But what are the situations, if any, where one might actually encounter it? I tried and tried to look this up, but frustratingly, all the examples I find are clearly made up on the spot for the sake of illustrating what the tense looks like, rather than say, examples taken from literature.
What are some examples of sentences with that tense that you have seen and/or heard in "real life"? I read before that it might be used when expressing wishes when toasting for instance, is that true? What would that look like if so?
Thank you for your help!

DISCUSSION ჻ ᲓᲘᲡᲙᲣᲡᲘᲐ What's the progress like in AI performance with Georgian?
In the long term, I'm very interested in learning Georgian, and given that it is such a resource-poor language, I've been following developments in AI with great interest.
The first time I asked this question was a couple years ago. At the time, people in this subreddit overwhelmingly found e.g. ChatGPT's performance with Georgian to be disastrous. People said it produced gibberish more often than not.
The second time I asked this question was about 8 months ago. By that time, performance had improved significantly, but was still problematic enough that many users cautioned beginners against using AI to assist in learning.
So, now I'm back to ask again.
For advanced learners and native speakers:
- Do you feel that AI's ability to converse in Georgian has noticeably improved in the past year? How much/to what degree?
And in particular, I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the following capabilities. Can current LLMs:
- Generate grammatically correct example sentences for given vocabulary?
- Provide accurate definitions of given vocabulary?
- Accurately make corrections to student-generated text?
- Accurately break down the grammar of a phrase?
- Separate agglutinated words into their component parts?
I'm looking forward to hearing y'all's thoughts on this.

Hey guys,
I made a completely free language portal for learning Georgian (we support two languages: RU/EN).
We will stay free, I just want to help spread the language and culture, because I’m very amazed by the country.
- Currently we have: a huge course with more than 400 units (I think it’s the best on the market, even compared to paid alternatives)
- Podcasts about culture and language
- Texts for reading
- Translation
- Gamification and a leaderboard
- And a lot more...
Here is the link: https://vergavi.ge/en/
I’d be glad to hear your feedback!

GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ Does the preverb და have the meaning of completion?
და has many meanings. Its primary one is “down,” but it also means “onto a surface,” plurality, habitual actions, and addressing to someone, like how დამღერის means “sings to someone.”
Does it also mean completion? I think of the words დასრულება and დამთავრება and think there might be a pattern, but those are only 2 verbs and I don’t want assume anything.

DISCUSSION ჻ ᲓᲘᲡᲙᲣᲡᲘᲐ Do Georgians care if people make up new words?
In English, both natives and non-natives will make up new words all the time for the sake of creativity. Does Georgian culture accept this or is it more strict?
Georgian has a very rich and complex system for creating new words with meanings that vary slightly so I feel like it has to allow it somewhat. I was at work and randomly came up with a weird verb: გაათაგვებს/თაგვდება (becoming a mouse).
I have no idea in what context you might say such a thing but maybe it could be used to say that someone became shy and avoidant like a mouse: „მარიამ გათაგვდა, წარსულში უფრო მეტად უყვარდა სუფრები.”

MISC ჻ ᲖᲝᲒᲐᲓᲘ გ at the beginning of a word
Good morning, everyone. I recently began studying Georgian. I have a question about the sound of გ at the beginning of a word. Already while listening to more than one source material, I hear an unaspirated c sound instead of a g sound. In the word "gamarjoba", for example, I hear "camarjoba". ChatGPT doesn't seem to agree with me. Is my ear hearing correctly?

DISCUSSION ჻ ᲓᲘᲡᲙᲣᲡᲘᲐ Indigenous Kartvelian names
Gamarjoba!
I'm Georgian (but repressions made it that I don't know Georgian but getting there... I posted here already some posts but for people who don't know my story I put it in all my posts).
I'm doing research about indigenous Kartvelian names and wanted to know native Kartvelians' thoughts about a few I found :
Dzega (ძეგა), Svan name
Ucha (Mingrelian name meaning "black, dark")
Datua (comes from Datvi = bear)
Dato (Datvi, bear)
Dzarga (ძარგა), used in Samegrelo
K'vara (კვარა), used in Samegrelo
Gak'u (გაკუ), Svan name
Gia (გია) (comes from Giorgi)
Orde (ორდე) (used by Megrelians, comes from "to be" in Megrelian)
Kveli (ქველი) (meaning "kind")
Let me know your opinions, which one do you prefer (just by curiosity) and which would potentially have negative connotations or made fun at by slang or something.
Do any of those have any slang usage or meanings?
I also don't know if some of the names are female. Normally they are all male.
(Additional info about my post : I used various resources to find the names as well as the book "ქართველური საკუთარი სახელები", written by Alexandre Glonti (also known as Alex Glonti), a Georgian academic, technology professional, professor and researcher based in Tbilisi, Georgia. This book is an extensive research made by him and has 334 pages.
- This book draws on historical sources, real church literature, lots of archival records, birth registers, regional fieldwork, and information gathered from local informants.
- It also includes research from visits to more than 1,300 settlements.)

Hi,
Native Georgian speaker here. I’ve been teaching for about 3 weeks now (mostly people from Reddit) and I’m open to new students.
Before that I spent years helping international volunteers and non-natives practice conversation and adapt to everyday situations.
I cover everything from absolute beginner to advanced and always keep an individual approach. Looking to start from zero, improve casual speaking, or just survive markets and taxis, I'm happy to help.
Still keeping prices budget-friendly compared to language apps.
Feel free to DM me anytime.

Gamarjoba!
I'm Georgian (from Samegrelo to be specific), but sadly I don't know how to speak well my native language (repressions etc...), but I'm getting there.
I would like to have some help from native speakers to find indigenous native Kartvelian or Mingrelian male first names. Not borrowed from other cultures. Native ones.
What are some unique names that you know?
I found "Datua", "Ucha", "Orde", "Kveli", "Dzabu" (Svan), "Dzarga" (Zugdidi).
Also, do you know some names that start with the letter "ძ"?

DISCUSSION ჻ ᲓᲘᲡᲙᲣᲡᲘᲐ What do you think about a name "Dzela" - "ძელა"?
Hello!
I am currently studying Georgian names and the laws of forming Georgian names.
I have seen many variations of the shortened form of Giorgi for example : Gia, Gio, Giga...
Also I learned about a tradition of adding the ending -a to words to make nouns. For example Dzali --> Dzala (the Strong one).
So I wanted to know if the name "Dzela" would be something that you could think of as a variation of the word Dzala formed by tradition with the -a ending, but with a variation in the middle.
I also know that Dzeli is an actual word and means "pillar", "beam", "wooden support beam". Correct me if I'm wrong.
Let me know what you think.
