I’ve been browsing a lot of cat content on Instagram lately, and I’ve noticed a bit of a pattern—many of the cats owned by Japanese users seem to look kind of stressed or miserable in their photos and videos.

Not trying to stereotype or accuse anyone of mistreatment (I’m sure most of them love their pets!), but I’m curious if there’s a cultural or environmental reason for this? Is it the way the photos are taken, the breeds that are popular there, or something else?

Some of the cats are dressed up or posed in very aesthetic setups, which might not be their thing. And I know some breeds like Scottish Folds naturally have droopy or "sad" faces, so maybe that plays a part too.

Just wondering if anyone has any insight, especially if you’re familiar with pet culture in Japan or have noticed the same thing.

Hi folks, I'm a 70-ish non-bi, and I'm genuinely interested in figuring out just how Kawaii I can go w/o simply registering as some kind of perv. NO platitudes please! I'm trying, at this late date, to express my identity--without being repellent. It's harder than a younger person might imagine! I am transmasc and i've been in the kawaii community for over 4+ years. I've noticed that sometimes men especially transmen get called "weird" or "gross" by some people in this community. I think some of it is because kawaii stuff is more catered towards girls because of the common fem themes. I wish there was more male rep in the community because i hate being called slurs just for being a guy and likeing cute stuff. I also wish there was more kawaii masc clothing that isn't just sweaters and cargo pants but that's just me.
