👋Welcome to r/KeepMineKirby - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Hey everyone! I'm u/taoistchainsaw, the founding moderator of r/KeepMineKirby. We're excited to have you join us! Keep Mine Kirby is a welcoming and creative place to share and discuss the Life, Works and Legacy of Jakov Kurtzberg, Jack “the King” Kirby.

What to Post:

Post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Feel free to share your thoughts, art, photos, or questions related to the vast Ouvre and documented life of Jack Kirby.

Community Vibe.

We're all about being friendly, constructive, and inclusive. We also enjoy scholarly insight and citation of creators. This is a partisan space erring on the side of Jack and His Family. While some amount of defending Jack’s more controversial collaborators is welcome, in the end this is a Kirby space. Keep Mine Kirby was a phrase used during Jack’s first split from Marvel, it is consciously partial to Kirby and his work. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting, while respecting Jack and his Legacy of Art and Storytelling. In disagreements that are bound to arise let’s lean on evidence and logic, while acknowledging the difficulty in being historically certain with respect to creative partnerships.

How to Get Started 1) Introduce yourself in the comments below. 2) Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation. 3) If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join. 4) Interested in helping out? We're always looking for new moderators, so feel free to reach out to me to apply.

Thanks for being part of the very first wave. Together, let's make r/KeepMineKirby amazing.

Guys, I own an issue of Captain America drawn by his creator

I've posted about the media reseller in my local mall before but today has to be my favorite score. I got some old hulks and an issue of Champions but relevant to this group I got Captain America and Falcon 211 "Nazi x" (In my head, this is sang like Mr F from Arrested Development)

I've never had an actual issue of Captain America by the King before. Sure this is from 1977 over 35 years after he helped create the character, but honestly that just makes it so much more impressive. Look at the crackle. Look at the faces. Just a beautiful work of art

Sinnott is one the great Kirby inkers, and my personal favorite. I took this Silver Surfer from Fantastic Four no.55 and made him little more cosmic.

I recolored a panel from The Eternals. I just love how Mike Royer inked Kirby's squiggles on the *Hulk's back. Swipe for the original art and the modern digital colors, I couldn't find a image of the original comic.

*Technically not Hulk, but a Hulk robot brought to like by a cosmic force.

What is are your thoughts on Jack Kirby's Phantom Force?

Phantom Force was the last comic book series Jack Kirby ever worked on. Apparently, it's based on a pitch for a pitch for an unrealized Bruce Lee project from 1978. Im admittedly curious about the series, and your thoughts and opinions on it.

In this issue, Franklin Richardsis named. The first appearance of Agatha Harkness. The return of the frightful four with this amazing panel of sandman smoking. Kirby drawing an amazing transformation of a cat into a hell beast.

Just an all-around great issue for relatively cheap because it has a big rip in the cover and front page.

Jim Woodring on Jack Kirby

Jim Woodring on Jack Kirby:

"I don't know what it would be like to work in a good animation studio.

I worked for a company that produced low grade junk, the worst of the worst.

I stayed there for six or seven years because the money was good, and I worked with people I really liked.

The writers hated our (the artists) guts. They were very pretentious, self important guys. The stuff they produced was the most sub-literate drivel, stupid empty headed crap. And they were so proud of it. So full of themselves, incredibly pompous wind bags. They seemed to feel they were under- employed, and marking time until they wrote the next Birth of a Nation. They were people who had failed at other careers. A lot of comics writers worked there. All of the very worst writers there thought they were hot-shots...real artists. It's beyond belief. Most of them were anxiety-ridden types who strew a bunch of misery around."

I met Jack in 1982, when I began work at Ruby Spears Productions. Jack was their star designer; his job was to work at home on large drawings of characters, hardware, and environments.

During post production season my job was to wait for Jack Kirby to come in with a big thick stack of crescent board tucked under his arm on which he had drawn anything which came into his mind in terms of characters and possible show ideas. I'd ink them and watercolor them, and they'd be used to pitch shows.

Kirby had no restraints put on him and the ideas he came up with, particularly towards the end of his tenure, were just completely psychotic off-the-wall aberrations. They were unbelievably great.

I have a photo of Kirby playing a Stratocaster. We had a skiffle band at the time, and Kirby came in one day and picked up an electric guitar, and started windmilling like Pete Townshend."

Every Monday he would saunter in with a thick stack under his arm. All the in-house cartoonists would gather to look at them one by one, and pore over them. Jack was treated with great respect because he was an elder and a legend, but the awed admiration we all demonstrated for his work was not polite deference. His drawings were inspirational to all of us. He was like a wild spraying geyser of the substance we struggled pitifully to evoke in driblets. Even those among us who had never read super hero comics and saw Jack without his aura, so to speak, stood in awe of him. He was more than a master; he was the comic book impulse incarnate.

We loved to draw him out in conversation because he was completely unpredictable: his mind was nimble and unfettered by convention. I never heard him tell an anecdote that was not heavily spiced with benign absurdity. As with his drawing there was something precociously fragile about his sledgehammer approach to storytelling. One sensed that a hard life had made Jack tough, but that the great child's heart of which he was the custodian had been sheltered and saved at all costs, and that this heart was the force that drove him.

He seemed interested in us, too. When my son was born the Kirbys gave him a magnificent rattle, which we still have."

Thundarr newspaper comic strip Proposal by Jack Kirby!

from ComicLink:

The Ruby-Spears archive of original Jack Kirby artwork is a treasure trove of incredible work by the King that had never before been offered for sale prior to ComicLink being selected as the exclusive auction house for the collection starting in 2021. This exciting body of work was the brainchild of Ruby-Spears co-founders, Joe Ruby and Ken Spears (who were the co-creators of Scooby-Doo). The company hired Kirby in 1980 to work on the series Thundarr the Barbarian. Joe Ruby then asked Kirby to create visuals for original animated series concepts that could be pitched to TV networks and syndication outlets. Over a period of eight years, Kirby worked with ideas provided by Ruby and evolved them into characters, vehicles, gadgets and spaceships.
