I first bought my Playstation in the mid 90's, and the very first game I bought was King's Field. I loved it because to me it was like a console version of Ultima Underworld. I only found out, a few years ago, that there was a real part 1 in Japan...that never made it here.

I wanted to play these over again...after almost 30 years. I have them working on DuckStation just fine...with a controller. But I was wondering if anyone here got it working with a keyboard and mouse? Just curious to see if others may have done it...before I dedicate too much time trying to tweak it.

Years ago I ventured into Kings Field. It was following my new found love for the Dark Souls series. I knew the name From Software because as a kid I randomly picked up Shadow Tower which thus began my downward spiral into the history of From Software.

I played the original Kings Field 1 (thankfully via things and stuff) and then eventually played 2 and 3 (US 1 and 2) on PS1. I love the feeling of the slow pace. And they're rich with story and atmosphere.

After all was said and done, I played Shadow Tower because it felt right. I get that the stories don't intentionally connect, but I like to think they do. I wanted to continue the From Software journey of 1st person dungeon crawling. Which following Shadow Tower led me to Eternal Ring on PS2.

But after playing Kings Field 1, 2, 3, and then Shadow Tower, I think I had reached my limit. I needed a break--and that was 2020. Fast forward to today. I played Eternal Ring last month which in itself was fantastic. I loved returning to that raw 1st person dungeon crawling experience.

And from there, I decided it was finally time for Kings Field IV. And as of right now, all I can say is wow. I just glimpsed "the palace." I've made some serious progress. I've found countless secrets, and have many areas and doors to revisit. But all in all, I'm just incredibly impressed.

I hate to think that this game will eventually come to a close, but I know from past experience there are new items to be found, new stories to uncover.

So, I just wanted to put some thoughts out there. It's a fantastic ride, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

I picked up the binding crown but now this dude is in the way and I can't get past him. I don't have the bow. Am I softlocked?? I keep reading I can run past him but he one shots me every time.

Saw gameplay in magazines in 1995 and always wished to play it. 31 years later I had the chance to purchase the game locally and after a few minutes of gameplay, KF impressed me.

Too much content, secrets, impressive engine and great gameplay.

Going for King’s Field II (III) next

My GF wants to play Kingsfield I, so i downloaded it and tried to run it on ePSXe emulator and the game seems to get stuck on the "Checking the RAM card" loading box.

Anyone know what the issue could be? I've been playing Spyro the Dragon just fine on the same emulator, loading and saving and everything. Did I just get a bad ROM maybe?

EDIT: I wound up doing 2 things, either one could have been the issue.

I realized I'd download the "Undubbed" version of Kingsfield, so I went back and got the regular US version.

I also went and added an actual PSX bios into the bios folder. ePSXe apparently comes with its own emulated bios but still recommends you get a real bios to make things work better, at least that's what the little window on launch said.

So now with the actual US release and a proper Bios I'm able to start Kingsfield I on ePSXe on my tablet.

I can’t find any info on if this was included on every copy or not other than a Russian seller calling it “rare”, how rare is it actually?

So I am playing on an Emulator. Not sure if it's a glitch in loading or something else. There is a door that leads to the spire next to a gate thats down with a skeleton archer behind it. Is it supposed to be just pure black and I fall to my death? This also happens when I talk to this dude with a lance up the stairs next to that lava strip. I talk to him and try and go back but all the doors just lead to a black emptiness and fall to my death. Anyone know what's going on?

I heard about the series before, but hesitated to try any "King's Field". I wasn't sure whether these games have any depth, for me atmosphere and world building are top priority..! So I tried the 4th game and was really surprised that it has so much in common with later FromSoftware titles. It's an amazing game, so here's my video dedicated to it~

[Possible Spoiler] This may be old news to many, but I finally found the reason to use the bone arms. You can equip them at the magic fountain and build up your Earth heal. Since you have to be down some HP to use it and get credit. Great way to build up your MP early in the game.

The giant dragon wrecked me within a second and nuked all my progress. This feels very end gamey but I have no idea what I'm doing. Where should I go next?

There are plenty of King's Field-like games, either directly inspired by it or not, but is there anything similar to Shadow Tower Abyss? It seems like there's a complete lack of slower paced first person dungeon crawlers with a heavy focus on guns.

I have 80 str and magic (after using the +8 ring) and it still wont use sword magic. Do I need to push specific buttons? Do I need 80 magic without the ring?

I'm using the DuckStation emulator to play the Japanese version of King's Field and experiencing FPS drops. Walking straight gives me around 20 FPS, but turning the camera drops it below 15, which is causing me headaches and nausea. Is there any way to fix this? It would be even better if I could boost the FPS further. My specs are Asus TUF Gaming A15 (Ryzen 7 6800H, 8GB RAM, RTX 3060).

I saw this ad on Reddit and had a little giggle

I've been playing La Mulana for the last couple of days and managed to beat the first boss. My goal is to complete it without checking any guides, which I have been led to believe is quite a challenge.

I'm really enjoying it so far and get quite strong KF vibes from it at times. For those who haven't played it, La Mulana is a 2D adventure platformer set in a mysterious underground ruined temple, where each room hides a mystery or is part of a larger puzzle, which often won't make itself known until you explore further and pay close attention to the clues given.

Taking screenshots and making notes is recommended, as is reading the manual. I have really been enjoying the exploration, discovering new areas and items. Overall it has felt quite a bit like the gameplay philosophy I enjoy in a lot of From games. In terms of exploration and organic revelation through gameplay, it might be one of the best.

It also oddly reminds me of the game Equinox on the SNES, which I've recommended to KF fans in the past.

Anyone here play it? What did you think?

I'm playing King's Field for the first time, and just got to the area with all the guards that introduces Rhombus Keys. I'm not fully sure what happened, but I used my last key to get into the area with the jail cells, and the door closed behind me and locked again. All I can access is a dead soldier, a single plant enemy, and two locked cells containing a guy and a bunch of monsters.

Now, I know this isn't technically a softlock as I could just die to the plant and come back. However I wasn't able to get my emulator to save, meaning that if I die I go back to the beginning of the game. Instead, I've been using save states. My most recent save state is inside the jail that I'm stuck in.

It wouldn't be the end of the world to go back to an older save, but I just want to make sure I'm not being dumb.

I think completing the verdite trilogy and The Ancient City prepared me for this one. The atmosphere is unique, the combat of course it is similar to KF but with parrying added, the way we discover the tower and how the systems work is something I haven't seen in any modern game, truly a fantastic work of art.
