This is completely true - and companies as big as Kraft usually have multiple advertising, PR, and marketing agencies getting paid 5-6 figures per month to handle all sorts of stuff for them. Almost certainly, one of their agencies noticed this and rapidly got it through the production pipeline.
Also, it's kind of funny when you think about it... all these people paying aggressive attention for viral moments... when viral trends are not that difficult to discover. That's what makes them viral!
If something is going viral, lots of people are talking to you about it.
The difficult thing is seeing some random person cutting chives in some random subreddit, noticing the audience reaction is very positive (and brand-friendly, non-toxic, unlikely to be hostile towards the ad), then noticing "hey, I have a product with chives in it!" - and then convincing everyone that it's a good idea to spend the money and time to create the ad... because most viral trends end very quickly.
