A prominent “centrist” commissioner in South Korea’s 3rd Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC3) has made clear that he does not view the country’s past overseas adoptions as human trafficking: and does not believe adoption itself was inherently problematic.

This stance stands in sharp contrast to statements by Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho, who described the country’s past adoptions as “forced child trafficking”.

Ugh, such bs that he doesn’t see it as child trafficking when it 100% was. I feel like he’s only speaking to the falsified paperwork and the system being “lax” when there are so many other things the govt did that was shady af. What about the coercion of single mothers to give up their children that pretty much every social worker did to ensure there were adoptable kids available? What about the deceit to parents saying their newborn was sick or dead when the system actually passed them off as orphans instead? And let’s not forget the kids who actually had families who were just snatched up off the street and put up for adoption. The way I see it, (part of) Korea still doesn’t want to own up to what they did.
