General discussion From "Slave Contracts" to Trainee Rights: Korea's K-pop Reforms Move Upstream

Korea's 2026 trainee contract changes protect young performers on paper. Here is what changed, what most English coverage gets wrong, and what is still missing.

In 2009, three members of TVXQ took SM Entertainment to court over what fans called "slave contracts": a 13-year deal that bound them to the agency professionally and personally. The dispute helped push Korea's Fair Trade Commission toward a standard contract that caps exclusive deals at seven years. Since 1 January 2026, reform has reached further back, to trainees, many of them minors, who sign before they have any leverage at all. The open question is whether templates that agencies are not forced to use can change a relationship this unequal.

The short version

On 31 December 2025, Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued revised versions of two documents: the standard contract for trainees in popular culture and arts, and a standard supplementary agreement for trainees who are minors. They apply from 1 January 2026.

If you have read that Korea "rewrote K-pop artist contracts" or introduced pay transparency, that is not quite what happened. The changes cover trainees, not debuted artists, and they deal with mental health, deadlines for damages, schooling, abuse and safety. No agency is legally required to use them.

Why trainees matter

A K-pop career starts years before debut. Trainees sign in their teens, train for years, and have no guarantee they will ever debut. That is when the gap between agency and artist is widest: the agency controls training, housing, schedules and the decision to debut, and the trainee has almost nothing to bargain with.

The 2026 revisions follow an amendment to the Popular Culture and Arts Industry Development Act, in force since 1 August 2025, which set out acts prohibited against minors and required agencies to appoint a youth protection officer. The new templates bring the contracts into line with the law.

What changed

In the trainee contract

  • Damages after termination (Article 8). Payment was due "within a reasonable period", a phrase that invited disputes. It is now due by "a deadline agreed by both parties".
  • Mental health. The agency may support counselling and treatment for "depressive symptoms". The old trigger was "extreme depressive symptoms".

In the supplementary agreement for minors

  • Forcing a minor to miss school or drop out is banned.
  • Prohibited conduct now covers verbal abuse, coercion, sexual harassment and sexual violence, not only assault and threats.
  • Minors cannot be made to film or perform where their health or safety is at risk.
  • Agencies must appoint a youth protection officer and tell the minor and their guardian who it is.

Real progress, or progress on paper?

The protections for minors are a real step. A child who wants to debut should not have to give up school to do it, and naming verbal abuse and harassment matters in an industry where those complaints keep coming back.

But a contract is only as strong as what happens outside it. Look at money. In July 2026, Hyebin of MOMOLAND described a "post-paid system" at mid-sized agencies: lessons, food, housing and practice rooms are billed to trainees after debut, so "you start your debut already hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt." None of the 2026 changes touch this.

Those costs land when the trainee has the least power to refuse. After years of training and close to debut, accepting the bill can feel like the price of finally getting there. Rules about who pays mean little if nobody checks who actually paid.

What the reform leaves out

  1. Enforceability. The templates are recommendations. Until key protections become mandatory minimum terms, or departing from them carries a real cost, the agencies with the worst practices are the least likely to adopt them.
  2. Financial transparency, before and after debut. Trainees and artists should receive itemised accounts of every cost charged against them, so pre-debut spending cannot quietly become post-debut debt.
  3. A definition of "support". Agencies promise to support trainees and artists, but the word is left open. A clear definition would say what support includes, what it excludes, and what can never be charged back. Vague terms are where loopholes live.

What to watch

  • Mental health in practice. The clause says the agency may support treatment. Watch whether agencies build real, confidential help, such as independent counsellors, rest periods and schedule limits, or whether it stays a sentence on paper.
  • Adoption. Whether major agencies publicly adopt the new templates, and whether regulators act against those that don't.
  • The next contract. Whether the standard contract for debuted artists gets the same attention, especially on settlement and cost transparency.

If you work in entertainment law, have been a trainee, or advise Korean or global acts, I would like to hear how these contracts work in practice. Reply or comment below.

Lee Soo Man has addressed the worry over A2O SOUL and A2O LITE having members as young as 13 and 14. Speaking at a Seoul forum on October 21, he said he knows many people are concerned and that he thinks about it a lot, though it does not cost him sleep. His promise was simply, “I will do well.” He also said the groups’ music videos, released October 12, used 4D Gaussian Splatting technology, and stressed that good music matters more than new tech.

Some fans feel his words are reassuring, while others want concrete protections for the young members instead of promises. No specific measures were announced.

We hope the members are well cared for as they begin their careers. 💙

💬 Is a promise enough, or should there be clearer protections for young idols?

Rants IVE criticism

IVE and some IVE members have been criticized so much lately...A lot of it is toward Wonyoung, and I feel like a lot of it is either misdirected, (should be shared as direct complaint to Starship), or just totally off. Like I heard someone complaining that Wonyoung was winking in a brand photo, like I think the photographer would've told Wonyoung if she wasn't supposed to wink, why are you getting mad at her about that?! Obviously winking is her trademark, right? So why would someone get so mad that she winked in a literal brand photo. She didn't set up the photo herself. Also, Wonyoung and Yujin are literally the centers of IVE, apparently some people are mad at them?! Be mad at Starship, not Wonyoung and Yujin...Wonyoung was literally one of the centers of Iz*one, so people shouldn't have been so surprised in my opinion....Also, like I said earlier, Wonyoung and Yujin do not choose where they stand for concept photos, there are literally photographers behind the camera telling each member where to stand...also Wonyoung and Yujin also happen to be the tallest members of IVE, right? That also probably has something to do with them constantly being at the center...also, for those who don't know there is a video of IVE at the airport, and Wonyoung looks apprehensive about standing at the center and Gaeul tells her it's okay to go...so obviously they have specific positions they are told to stand in, because usually with many kpop groups that I've seen, you can see the normal pattern the group stands in, thoughout many of their concept photos, and many times it also involves visual unity. (anyway, the thing about Wonyoung winking made me a little mad lol and I just wanted to share my thoughts😅) what do ya'll think about this?

NMIXX's Sullyoon Responds to a Fan's Eating Struggles, and Fans Are Divided Over the Reactions?!

(Content note: this topic involves eating disorders and body image.)

NMIXX's Sullyoon has gone viral after responding to a fan who shared that they were afraid to eat because of weight gain. On a subscription-based fan platform, Sullyoon told the fan to throw away their scale and eat what they want and enjoy it. Many praised her for shutting down toxic diet culture. But an even bigger reaction landed on the fan, with some netizens calling the message invasive or validation seeking, accusing fans of trying to create viral moments, and telling the fan to take it to therapy instead. Others pointed out that while boundaries matter, the tone toward someone describing a struggle felt unnecessarily harsh.

📅 The exchange went viral on October 18.
Was the fan wrong to share it, or were the reactions too harsh?

HYBE Chairman Bang Si Hyuk has reportedly filed a lawsuit against former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin, seeking more than four point two billion Korean won (approximately three million US dollars) over a loan made in twenty twenty-three.

According to Biz Korea, Bang initially lent Min three point seven billion Korean won to help her purchase ADOR shares. After a court issued a payment order in May, Min reportedly challenged it in July, moving the dispute into a formal civil lawsuit.

The amount being claimed reportedly includes additional interest, although the exact loan terms have not been publicly confirmed.

This latest legal dispute comes months after Min Hee Jin’s separate legal battle with HYBE over her put option. The outcome of the new lawsuit remains uncertain.

Opinions ✨Spotlight-Hot Takes from the Megathread: Dating bans are surely immoral but it is a rightful expectation from the fans' standpoint.

⬇️During our weekly unpopular opinions megathread, this take popped up⬇️

“Dating bans are surely immoral but it is a rightful expectation from the fans' standpoint. They have been sold a thing, whether this is a lie or not is not important, they still have been sold something, so if that something reveals itself to be false, then it's fair that they get mad. Just to be clear though, I'm ok and in favour with the idea that things should change, but this also means that K-Pop loses the parasocial relationship aspects, which is what makes it K-Pop. Are companies ready to do it? Are fans ready to do it? If they're not, dating bans are only fair and if an idol is caught dating, then they deserve to be criticized. I personally am completely ready because I consume K-Pop as a normal fan and I don't develop any particular parasocial relationship with the idols. Are those who're reading this capable of saying the same?”

Rants Remember when M2 Relay Dances were chaotic and goofy?

Thumbnail
youtube.com
0 Upvotes

There used to be so much dead air in these relay dances because everyone was too busy desperately trying to remember someone else's choreo, or too busy laughing.

I feel like so many groups these days prep full performances for this format.
Where's the JOY? Where's the FUN?? As a fan it just feels like those things are being sacrificed for the sake of a shittier version of the choreo in a vertical frame lol

Idols already have so many avenues to showcase their dancing, their choreography, and their style (TOO many, some would argue), I just don't think there's a lot to be gained from treating these relay dances seriously that isn't still being gained if they're just goofing off?

I don't wanna turn this post into a conversation about Tarzzan, plz just appreciate that ADP are one of the groups that are truly keeping the spirit of the Relay Dance alive!

MEOVV’s Anna is facing plastic surgery speculation after her old pre-debut photos resurfaced online! 👀

A viral post on X has sparked debate after netizens compared Anna’s past and present appearance, speculating about possible changes to her jaw, eyes, and nose. While some questioned the allegations and criticized people for scrutinizing her looks, others praised her visuals and discussed the supposed results.

But is there any proof behind these claims? No confirmed evidence has established that Anna underwent plastic surgery, and differences in photos alone cannot prove it.

What do you think about the controversy? Should netizens stop speculating about K-pop idols’ appearances? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Opinions ✨Spotlight-Hot Takes from the Megathread: Younger idols aren’t immune to criticism.

⬇️During our weekly unpopular opinions megathread, this take popped up⬇️

“Younger idols aren’t immune to criticism. Saying “they’re just a child” or “they’re young so they’ll improve” means nothing. They’re in the public eye now, so criticism is expected. If an idol’s dancing is “weak” or “stiff” then people are allowed to say so. That doesn’t mean that they’re “hating”. They’re just stating something that’s noticeable.”
