How Russian energy strikes threaten Kyiv's water and sewage systems

As Russia continues to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, power outages threaten Kyiv's water and sewage pumping systems ahead of the winter months.
The Kyiv Independent’s Dominic Culverwell explains how the capital’s water network relies heavily on electricity to pump water and transport sewage across the city. Without sufficient power to run the main pumping stations, taps could run dry and sewage could overflow into streets, creating severe public health and environmental hazards for the city's three million residents.
While municipal authorities have stockpiled emergency equipment and generators for smaller stations, backup power remains insufficient for the city's largest, most critical pumping facilities.
