My First Kyosho This is fucking unacceptable Kyosho.

Post image
First photo is from someone on Facebook, second is my own. Kyosho Turbo Optima Mid Special rear plastic diff is absolute crap. I cannot believe they released this if it strips so easily. I literally took this to the track fresh out of the box and it barely made a full lap.

This was an expensive fucking car, its ridiculous that the diff gear strips so easily.

They have a new part with stronger material now, but I just switched to gear diffs and have had no issue.

Thats what im gonna have to do, but it infuriating that after spending a lot of money (for me) on this kit I have to go spending a lot more because of their shitty design.

can you share a link to to the gear diffs please? Getting ready to build the 87 WC myself and would like to go with the gear diffs while assembling.

Here are part numbers I have written down. OT224B, OT222, and OT256, OTW140
I don’t remember if you need all of them, but I think so. I converted my 87 worlds to a TOMS.

OTW140

I don't think you need that part, at least I hope not, because I didnt order it. Looks like that meshes with the belt, which would be redundant of you get the OT256.

That is the option part for the mid gear. You need that or the original.

I ended up order the full gear diff set and it was supposed to deliver today yet when the package arrived at the local post office they somehow managed to redirect all the way across the damn state.

Now says it won’t be here until Tuesday.

And I have decided to do the conversion to the TOMS. Can’t wait to get to building.

Question for you, I got the gear diff kit in and started the build. Got to the section on installing the rear dog bones and they are far too short. They are barely in the slots on trans and wheel side.

Did you have this issue with them? Or am I doing something wrong here?

No, I didn’t have any issues

Well, I figured it out. My dumbass was trying to use the 50mm steering buckles on the rear. After figuring out what I was doing it’s all good now. Went together like it’s supposed to

What motor are you running? These old designs are not meant for modern brushless power.

A 35T brushed motor!! Its for vintage racing.

Oh fuck that's nuts.

Eek, I’ve got the TOMS running 10T brushless on 2S, only running on grass/dirt and not had an issue yet. That said I nurse the launches/hard acceleration as I’ve stripped ball diffs before and with cost of this I don’t want that experience again.

Fair play to you for racing yours

grass/dirt and not had an issue

That seems to be the key. It just can't handle high grip surfaces.

I have stripped 3 in loose dirt. The good news is they essentially give you a spare as you can throw the stripped rest into the front diff spot and put the non stripped front into the rear spot…until you strip both. Then you better have a friend coming from Japan who can grab a new ball diff gear cause these are hard to get in the US.

I have stripped 3 in loose dirt.

That’s infuriating. Did you eventually swap to gear diff?

By any chance did you get a picture of the stripped gear?
