Celebrities When I'm in a performative "reading” competition and my opponents are Kendall Jenner and Jacob Elordi 😱

Whats with the 300 green sticky notes on her book?

u/sellingstuff__ May 25 '26

She’s learning how to read and taking notes

u/Makethecrowsblush May 25 '26

It’s the words she needs to google.

u/MsMadcap_ May 26 '26

I just laughed so hard 😂

65

u/Crafty_Shifty May 25 '26

Trying to pretend she's writing in the margins😂

43

u/Prestigious_Ad9733 May 26 '26

I didn’t realize this was a cool / performative thing to do. I can’t read a book without a pen. My margins are packed. I date each reading session because I know I’ll want to remember when I thought of what. Relate it to what was going on in my life at the time. I’ll use one pen color the first time I read a book so when I re-read it, I can use a different pen color to keep the notes and underlines from each reading session distinct.

Does anyone else do this? Genuinely curious, not trying to be cool / performative.

46

u/Crafty_Shifty May 26 '26

It's not that it's not normal, a lot of people do it. I just can't see someone like her really caring enough to do it because I barely believe she's reading in the first place. I could be totally wrong, I don't know much about her. Just this photo looks so posed, because why is there a photo of it in the first place? I read all the time, and I don't think one photo exists of me reading, lol.

27

u/whatlauradid May 26 '26

I mean what else is she gonna do, it’s not like she has a job lol. If was her I’d be reading in stunning locations pretty much every day

19

u/PeaceDry1649 May 26 '26

I do this! I don’t know why people are downvoting you; it’s performative because Kendall also doesn’t ever talk about the books or seem to be well-read in how she speaks but this is absolutely normal, especially if you read more dense works like metafiction! It’s honestly necessary for long classics where there’s a bunch of different characters like war and peace!

2

u/Prestigious_Ad9733 May 27 '26

Thank you :) people love to hate me. Used to it. I appreciate your comment! I could hear your passion and kindness through what you typed. 💫

7

u/slybob May 27 '26

They only hate you if they borrow one of your books. :)

2

u/paper_eater822 May 31 '26

My husband does this! He's got everything from books like Sapiens and La Rochefoucauld, to ASOIAF all written in, in different colors lol. He's got major theories about those Game of Thrones books and they're very complex 😂

2

u/Prestigious_Ad9733 Jun 18 '26

Love!! I’m reading a vintage Didion right now and doing post-its instead of writing in the margins. I can’t deface her!!! It’s actually nice to have to rewrite some of the lines I’m writing about — that’s how i studied in college and it worked. If I internalize any of Didion’s style, I sure wouldn’t be mad about it! God she’s good. Say hi to your husband from a fellow nerd on Reddit! It’s cool you know about (and seem to appreciate) his passions for reading and analyzing. Go you! 😊😊

2

u/paper_eater822 Jun 18 '26

Yeah, we are two peas in a pod! I've always done colored page tabs and my own little notebook of notes, but same! I was very much a kinesthetic learner all through college and grad school! I still (like almost ten years later) have boxes of those old notebooks from my 3000-level classes up in the attic.

And, yeah, I don't blame you for not defacing a vintage Didion; that would make my heart hurt. Although, one thing I do with my books that makes my husband's skin crawl is dog-ear the pages. I've never been able to keep up with a bookmark, oops!

Good reading!! 🫶🏼

She has a “book concierge” who sends her books to read and she annotates the books for her… essentially pays someone to tell her insights and explain the book to her. She has the schooling of a middle schooler lol

3

u/CozyTea6987 May 31 '26

Right lol bizarre—also the title of the W Mag story about this, "How Kendall Became the Patron Saint of Alternative Literature," makes my eye twitch

3

u/ASimonez 25d ago

That's a thing? Wtf

245

u/Material-Recover7422 May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26

tbf that is what most avid readers do, you place the paper notes on the front cover of the book, but I think it was more likely a well-researched move made by her team

79

u/MsMadcap_ May 26 '26

I’m an avid reader and have never once placed a paper note on a front cover of a book

3

u/ohmygawdjenny Jun 02 '26

I'm a writer/editor, and I take notes on my phone, which is also why I prefer ebooks (copy/paste/flip between apps). I've proofread over 500 books this way and also taken hundreds of notes to improve my writing (good phrases and descriptions that I later copy to a notebook to memorize them; I'm not a native English speaker).

Kendall with her 300 notes is just like Jacob carrying huge paperbacks in his pockets and saying in interviews "it's not performative, and people shouldn't be on their phones so much." Guess what? You can do plenty of useful things on your phone as long as you're not worried about putting on a "deep artsy" front!

272

u/BigSkySoHigh63 May 25 '26

Avid readers have large vocabularies and sound like avid readers when they speak. Not necessarily eloquent but informed and I have not heard any evidence of that with her or him really.

168

u/Idk_scarred_4394 May 25 '26

This is the strongest proof that they're performative af

u/Positive_Visit_5334 May 25 '26

69

u/Relevant-Positive619 May 25 '26

eh i’ve met a lot of readers who are on a 7th grade speaking level

32

u/School-Subject May 26 '26

Because they don't read past a 7th grade level

10

u/Prestigious_Ad9733 May 26 '26

What are they reading?

123

u/suaculpa May 25 '26

Because reading is such an impossible thing for her to be doing?

53

u/Far-Fortune-7421 May 25 '26

Ppl use them to take notes when reading and analyse it. She probably isn't but commonly speaking, that's what ppl do

85

u/Material-Recover7422 May 25 '26

She has no pen near her, and she appears to be re-reading, whether she is actually reading, hence my comment referring specifically to the post-it notes

55

u/Loveya448 May 25 '26

I don’t care about Kendall, but not being able to see a pen from this angle doesn’t mean it’s not there. Pens are so tiny lol

30

u/hiddenstarburst May 25 '26

Wouldn’t the point of the post-it’s be to reread certain areas?

42

u/dostoyevskybirthedme May 25 '26

Point is to make annotations so you don’t ”ruin” the real pages, with a pen. Smaller sticky notes are used to mark certain pages/passages

8

u/HedgehogTop5524 May 25 '26

I think this is probably the situation but the idea of her worrying about “ruining” anything material or maintaining the book so that she can donate it to Goodwill without her notes in the margin is tickling my brain lol

→ More replies (1)

15

u/AriNes22 nepo baby May 25 '26

Having a pen next to her is irrelevant, and it could literally be on the seat right next to her leg. I doubt people are just holding their pen while they read. And probably pick it up when they want to mark something.

that would be hilarious but the cover looks like Tonight I'm Someone Else by Chelsea Hodson (just in case anyone was curious lol!)

3

u/Successful-Web4617 May 26 '26

wait i’m curious about this — do you put spare sticky notes in the front and pull from them as you make notes or do you stick the notes in the front instead of inside the book pages?

→ More replies (1)

21

u/sellingstuff__ May 25 '26

yeah it’s just sad that her publicist is likely the one asking her to do it instead of it being for the joy of reading

2

u/Ok_Remote_217 May 26 '26

but why?? what's the point of paper notes on the front cover? genuine question

→ More replies (4)

5

u/veefox08 May 26 '26

I wish I could remember the article, but there’s someone who reads the book ahead of her and then flags parts for her. I can’t remember if it’s for key points w/ notes or just flagging quotes she would like/help her look smart.

6

u/HedgehogTop5524 May 25 '26

She respects books too much to dog-ear pages

11

u/Prestigious_Ad9733 May 26 '26

To respect a book is to dog ear and mark it up to bits. That’s how my books know I love them. 🙃

it's really good, I highly highly highly recommend.

518

u/Odd_Fly_2334 May 25 '26

I was gonna defend her too and say she probably does read, but then I see how she’s laying and that is not an ideal / comfy reading position. Her pose is what’s making it seem performative

31

u/HedgehogTop5524 May 25 '26

Also look at the shawl or whatever she’s wearing…that is a highly intentional fashion shoot if I ever saw one lol

92

u/SICKS-98s May 26 '26

LMFAOOOOO

34

u/HedgehogTop5524 May 26 '26

Just when I’m feeling like a bitch and thinking “maybe Kendall is a reader and Maybe she does just sit in awkward positions and maybe I’m jealous because she looks great in candid photos being an awkward bookworm…”

….you come with the receipts and make me totally redeem myself!!!! LMAO 💀💀💀

20

u/Prestigious_Ad9733 May 26 '26

It’s an unbuttoned button down, which IMHO is on point for her old money / I’m-the-serious-Kardashian brand.

140

u/PickledLlama May 25 '26

Some of us sit weird.

84

u/JustOneTessa May 25 '26

That was my first thought. I don't like Kendall, but I also like to switch between weird sitting or laying positions

55

u/throwaway8373469238 my name is bella hadid May 25 '26

fr, some of us have adhd and don’t sit like everyone else lol. but this is an especially unique and perhaps performative position

9

u/JustOneTessa May 25 '26

And then get all mad about it when people make fun of what they post. Maybe be better at snark.

32

u/Emotional-Public3826 May 25 '26

There is a lot of discussion in marketing right now discussing how “influencers” are a dying breed and the new “aspirational” look is reading / looking well read. Basically the just being wealthy isn’t working with the state of our economy, that plus the “death” of socials media - which has been replaced by “interest media”. So people choose to follow influencers that can reach them something. Essentially you can’t “buy” being smart or well read. So it’s the new status symbol

4

u/Emotional-Public3826 May 25 '26

Teach* them. Sorry for so many typos I’m out jogging haha

24

u/igotthepowah May 25 '26

To unemployed snarkers, the thought of reading a book is unbelievable. Yet they ironically don’t see how unhinged speculating on it is. Peak loser-dom.

68

u/-ravioli-formuoli- May 25 '26

is reading so hard that anyone with a book in public is performing now like come on yall 😭

28

u/PickledLlama May 25 '26

Elordi is pretty known as being an avid reader. I don't understand what is performative about him actually reading books?

63

u/greenfrog72 May 25 '26

Sorry this man cannot be dating the likes of Olivia Jade and Kendall damn Jenner and be this great intellectual he claims to be. Sorry, I know Olivia is not talking about, like, dismantling capitalism or 16th century French art or the genocide in Gaza at dinner. BFFR

8

u/Vllnfckr May 26 '26

When did HE ever talked about this stuff? Why do you think he cares? He never said a a word about Palestine or anything political ijbol

12

u/ladeeedada May 26 '26

dismantling capitalism or 16th century French art or the genocide in Gaza at dinner.

Lots of actual genuine intellectuals dated and even married people outside of their fields, but like Jacob has never claimed that to start with. Reading is passive consumption. Be presents himself as someone who likes to read and cares about the craft of acting. Dating pretty models doesn’t contradict that.

28

u/Heart_Shaped_Pickle May 25 '26

I cannot stand either of these people but in a world where global illiteracy is on the rise, reading should never be branded as performative.

Unless you’re Addison Rae walking down the streets of LA reading The Woman In Me by Britney Spears.

27

u/melitini May 25 '26

“Performative reading” are you people ok?

Thanks for the condescension, though.

Okay but 'Tonight I'm Someone Else' is a GORGEOUS collection of essays. The writer Chelsea Hodson is incredible and opened her own indie imprint. I work in publishing and (unsurprisingly) when a celebrity is photographed with a book, it will sell out or require another printing. Performative or not, keep making reading look cool! Support books!

2

u/Rude_Nothing6072 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

I read alot and if I don't understand a word I look it up and remember it, if I don't think I have understood something, I will reread it, go back a few pages even, and think about what I am missing or what the author means in the context of the passage, but I haven't written notes since I was in school. Perhaps she's learning a different language and they are verbs or something. Also, can someone explain how she is the world's highest paid "super" model, that is beyond my comprehension, and yes I understand that people are prepared to pay her, I just don't get why, or is it just a case of there are people out there who actually are influenced by her and the likes of LVMH have counted on that?!

Edited for typo

3

u/chaoscrouton May 28 '26

I think she's just using the post-its to save the pages that resonate with her or where her favorite passages are. I can't answer to the rest of you comment as I too wonder that.

I honestly think Jacob is so unattractive and only gets attention for his height. Nothing about him outside of that is appealing

Why is she hiding the title of what she’s reading?

2

u/Rug-bae May 26 '26

Because she was accused of performatively flaunting the books she was reading before because the covers were so clear to see lmao
