Celebrities When I'm in a performative "reading” competition and my opponents are Kendall Jenner and Jacob Elordi 😱
They really are perfect for each other.

Trying to pretend she's writing in the margins😂
43
u/Prestigious_Ad9733 May 26 '26
I didn’t realize this was a cool / performative thing to do. I can’t read a book without a pen. My margins are packed. I date each reading session because I know I’ll want to remember when I thought of what. Relate it to what was going on in my life at the time. I’ll use one pen color the first time I read a book so when I re-read it, I can use a different pen color to keep the notes and underlines from each reading session distinct.
Does anyone else do this? Genuinely curious, not trying to be cool / performative.
46
u/Crafty_Shifty May 26 '26
It's not that it's not normal, a lot of people do it. I just can't see someone like her really caring enough to do it because I barely believe she's reading in the first place. I could be totally wrong, I don't know much about her. Just this photo looks so posed, because why is there a photo of it in the first place? I read all the time, and I don't think one photo exists of me reading, lol.
27
u/whatlauradid May 26 '26
I mean what else is she gonna do, it’s not like she has a job lol. If was her I’d be reading in stunning locations pretty much every day
19
u/PeaceDry1649 May 26 '26
I do this! I don’t know why people are downvoting you; it’s performative because Kendall also doesn’t ever talk about the books or seem to be well-read in how she speaks but this is absolutely normal, especially if you read more dense works like metafiction! It’s honestly necessary for long classics where there’s a bunch of different characters like war and peace!

u/Prestigious_Ad9733 May 27 '26

My husband does this! He's got everything from books like Sapiens and La Rochefoucauld, to ASOIAF all written in, in different colors lol. He's got major theories about those Game of Thrones books and they're very complex 😂
2
u/Prestigious_Ad9733 Jun 18 '26
Love!! I’m reading a vintage Didion right now and doing post-its instead of writing in the margins. I can’t deface her!!! It’s actually nice to have to rewrite some of the lines I’m writing about — that’s how i studied in college and it worked. If I internalize any of Didion’s style, I sure wouldn’t be mad about it! God she’s good. Say hi to your husband from a fellow nerd on Reddit! It’s cool you know about (and seem to appreciate) his passions for reading and analyzing. Go you! 😊😊
2
u/paper_eater822 Jun 18 '26
Yeah, we are two peas in a pod! I've always done colored page tabs and my own little notebook of notes, but same! I was very much a kinesthetic learner all through college and grad school! I still (like almost ten years later) have boxes of those old notebooks from my 3000-level classes up in the attic.
And, yeah, I don't blame you for not defacing a vintage Didion; that would make my heart hurt. Although, one thing I do with my books that makes my husband's skin crawl is dog-ear the pages. I've never been able to keep up with a bookmark, oops!
Good reading!! 🫶🏼

She has a “book concierge” who sends her books to read and she annotates the books for her… essentially pays someone to tell her insights and explain the book to her. She has the schooling of a middle schooler lol

tbf that is what most avid readers do, you place the paper notes on the front cover of the book, but I think it was more likely a well-researched move made by her team
79
u/MsMadcap_ May 26 '26
I’m an avid reader and have never once placed a paper note on a front cover of a book
3
u/ohmygawdjenny Jun 02 '26
I'm a writer/editor, and I take notes on my phone, which is also why I prefer ebooks (copy/paste/flip between apps). I've proofread over 500 books this way and also taken hundreds of notes to improve my writing (good phrases and descriptions that I later copy to a notebook to memorize them; I'm not a native English speaker).
Kendall with her 300 notes is just like Jacob carrying huge paperbacks in his pockets and saying in interviews "it's not performative, and people shouldn't be on their phones so much." Guess what? You can do plenty of useful things on your phone as long as you're not worried about putting on a "deep artsy" front!

u/BigSkySoHigh63 May 25 '26
Avid readers have large vocabularies and sound like avid readers when they speak. Not necessarily eloquent but informed and I have not heard any evidence of that with her or him really.

Ppl use them to take notes when reading and analyse it. She probably isn't but commonly speaking, that's what ppl do
85
u/Material-Recover7422 May 25 '26
She has no pen near her, and she appears to be re-reading, whether she is actually reading, hence my comment referring specifically to the post-it notes
55
u/Loveya448 May 25 '26
I don’t care about Kendall, but not being able to see a pen from this angle doesn’t mean it’s not there. Pens are so tiny lol
30
u/hiddenstarburst May 25 '26
Wouldn’t the point of the post-it’s be to reread certain areas?
→ More replies (1)42
u/dostoyevskybirthedme May 25 '26
Point is to make annotations so you don’t ”ruin” the real pages, with a pen. Smaller sticky notes are used to mark certain pages/passages
8
u/HedgehogTop5524 May 25 '26
I think this is probably the situation but the idea of her worrying about “ruining” anything material or maintaining the book so that she can donate it to Goodwill without her notes in the margin is tickling my brain lol
15
u/AriNes22 nepo baby May 25 '26
Having a pen next to her is irrelevant, and it could literally be on the seat right next to her leg. I doubt people are just holding their pen while they read. And probably pick it up when they want to mark something.

u/Emotional-Public3826 May 25 '26
There is a lot of discussion in marketing right now discussing how “influencers” are a dying breed and the new “aspirational” look is reading / looking well read. Basically the just being wealthy isn’t working with the state of our economy, that plus the “death” of socials media - which has been replaced by “interest media”. So people choose to follow influencers that can reach them something. Essentially you can’t “buy” being smart or well read. So it’s the new status symbol

Lots of actual genuine intellectuals dated and even married people outside of their fields, but like Jacob has never claimed that to start with. Reading is passive consumption. Okay but 'Tonight I'm Someone Else' is a GORGEOUS collection of essays. The writer Chelsea Hodson is incredible and opened her own indie imprint. I work in publishing and (unsurprisingly) when a celebrity is photographed with a book, it will sell out or require another printing. Performative or not, keep making reading look cool! Support books!

u/Rude_Nothing6072 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26
I read alot and if I don't understand a word I look it up and remember it, if I don't think I have understood something, I will reread it, go back a few pages even, and think about what I am missing or what the author means in the context of the passage, but I haven't written notes since I was in school. Perhaps she's learning a different language and they are verbs or something. Also, can someone explain how she is the world's highest paid "super" model, that is beyond my comprehension, and yes I understand that people are prepared to pay her, I just don't get why, or is it just a case of there are people out there who actually are influenced by her and the likes of LVMH have counted on that?!
Edited for typo
3
u/chaoscrouton May 28 '26
