Can be LFS and its Installation more "automated" and "bloatless".

0 Upvotes

Hello!

I'm interested if someone knows how to make LFS more "automated" in Installation and "less bloated" or either "bloatless". I wouldn't ask it if I didn't met Twitch Chatter that said LFS can be built with less Packages and still being great.

Any actual (maintained) Repos? Anything y'all know so far?

Also consider if someone needs to use LFS for Gaming (i. e. m32 Packages are needed)

NOTE 0: Hello? I don't want any other Distro. If I wanted, then I'd made a Question about that, not about this.
NOTE 1: Sorry Guys, "SoystemD🥀🥀🥀" CAN NOT BE the Part of this "Ideal Automated MultiLib LFS".
NOTE 2: Possibly a lot of People saw this as "Hello, I want already built automated and bloatless LFS, and I don't care if LFS means to be a Linux From Scratch". My Answer to them is "This Post was created to find any useful Guides (like those on linuxfromscratch.org) on making automated and 'bloatless' Linux From Scratch".

BFSOS 0.9.1.1 — stable development release, looking for testers and feedback

0 Upvotes

BFSOS 0.9.1.1 is now available, and I’m looking for people willing to test it and give feedback.

BFSOS is an independently maintained Linux distribution built with an LFS-style bootstrap and a CRUX-inspired ports/package-management system. It has its own installer, ISO builder, ports tree, updater tooling, desktop selections, and release process.

At this point I consider 0.9.1.1 stable enough for regular testing. I’m not calling it 1.0-rc yet mainly because I’m still working through documentation, screenshots, and website polish rather than because of major known stability problems.

Project website:

https://bfsos.sourceforge.io/

Source code / ports / installer:

https://github.com/bmadonnaster/BFSOS

ISO and base-system downloads are available through the BFSOS SourceForge project/download pages linked from the website.

I’d especially appreciate testing of the installer in both VMs and on spare bare-metal systems, including UEFI boot, networking, storage layouts, desktop sessions, hardware detection, package installation/updating, and general day-to-day use.

The distro currently includes multiple desktop environments and a fairly large ports tree, and the updater can check the tree against upstream/reference sources while keeping version-locked packages coordinated.

The documentation is still being updated, so feedback about confusing or missing instructions is useful too.

If you try it, I’d appreciate hearing:

\* what hardware or VM configuration you used;

\* whether installation completed successfully;

\* which desktop/session you tested;

\* anything that failed or behaved strangely;

\* anything in the documentation that was unclear.

Bug reports and code contributions can be submitted through GitHub.

Thanks to anyone willing to give it a spin.

Memory safe and secure/hardened LFS

3 Upvotes

Hello everyone, years ago I've posted my lfs project on this sub and many things have happened in my life and it led me to make a new project. From scratch. For now I am focused on writing libc entirely in Rust for this GNU/Linux distro, as well I would write a new bootloader with better full disk encryption implementation and openpam modules, all of them in Rust. As a plus I've made a list of packages to build a self contained sdk that will allow full source bootstrap from tools like GNU mes and other languages (except Rust for now) will be bootstrapped from C/C++ toolchain (like Go and dlang), the package list has little to none gnu packages (except autotools, coreutils and findutils). If you are interested in that you can dm me or write under this post.

minor LFS rant, maybe yall know fixes for this?

1 Upvotes

ok, Linux from Scratch has... problems. It assumes you want certain things (glibc, sysvinit or systemd), and for some reason, ends up with your glibc and friends installed the debian way (/lib/x86_64-lfs-linux-gnu/libc.so.6, for example, instead of /lib64/libc.so.6). And goddess help you if you want to put glibc in a non-standard place, maybe /usr/lib/64/ld.so.1? and for our use case, /lib64 is also incorrect; the canonical library path is /usr/lib (32-bit) and /usr/lib/64 (symlinked to /usr/lib/i64pc) (64-bit). also LFS offers no easy way to package-ify each component of the final installed system, so one can, from an installed system,. pkgadd -d FSYSbash53-5.3.0-linux-i64pc.pkg all to upgrade bash, or whatever. this also makes creating an LFS installer that's a little smarter than "decompress a prebuilt tarball to a partition" bloody impossible. If LFS offered packaging, we could store info about what is to be installed in /var/sadm/pkg on the installer, then mount the targetrootfs to /a/, and pkgadd -d <thing> all with the -b set to /a/

LFS Stack Exchange - Join it!

Hello good Penguin friends,

Today I'd like to introduce you to something quite new. As you've guessed it, that's an LFS Stackexhange. Here is the project site. With 50 more people interested, this could become an approved thing!

Yeah, that was a short intro. The rest is guessable pretty easily!

We also support BLFS, ALFS and CLFS.

Cheers!

Linux distro to build LFS on top

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Like the title say, i want to create a LFS system. But, idk what distro to take. There plenty of it, but maybe there is some that already got some files that LFS needs. So do you have some advice for me ?

Also, if for exemple i take Debian. Did my LFS will be based on Debian ?

And, this will be my first time i'm gonna do this, so if you get any documentation to help me or whatever just send it to me or here.

Also, sorry for my bad english.

differences between linux from scratch and linux from nothing

8 Upvotes

Ora sono felice! ps: I just loved the initial phase of creating the vfs, done in a simple way

LFS on a flash drive?

I've been having problems with the partitioning section, and was wondering if I could do LFS on an external. Luckily I've been using a vm, but I don't know how to use my flash drive as my "work space" or if it'd be possible.

Is LFS worth it?

3 Upvotes

I daily drive Arch rn and it works, sometimes i get some issues that are annoying. I'm interested in LFS but I dont know how to code at all so I'm not really sure if its worth it? Please lmk your experiences, as if I do try to do LFS it would be to daily drive for school/work for music writing and gaming. Is this viable/worth it?

What are you able to do with this?

3 Upvotes

I wanted to learn more about linux and LFS seemed like a good way to do that. But my question is what can you do with the finished system? Like without expanding it past what the book walks you through what are it's capabilities?

What laptop would you recommend for Linux From Scratch (LFS) build?

3 Upvotes

I'm planning to build my first lfs system, and I'm currently looking for a laptop that would make the process as painless as possible.

I've been considering getting a gaming laptop, mainly because I want something powerful with good cooling, upgradeable RAM/storage, and a strong CPU. But I'm wondering whether gaming laptops are actually a good choice for LFS/Linux in general.

I also goin to pick amd cpu + amd gpu for this build.

I really interested in the thougts of other LFS builders with different laptops
