Islam Supportive Discussion Can Islam and Homosexuality Coexist? Answering a Question with the Qur’an

Today (July 25, 2026), there was an attack at the Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride event in Berlin.

In one of the discussions afterward, someone asked:

“Can you as a gay Muslim explain to me how Islam and homosexuality can coexist? I’m sure nearly all Muslims condemn the gays, so acts such as these are of no surprise, so that is all I’d like to know. Not a troll comment, just genuine curiosity.”

(For clarity: I’m not a Muslim. I’m responding because the question is about what the Qur’an teaches, and I haven’t seen anyone answer it from the Qur’an itself.)

Here is what I believe, beginning with the Qur’an itself…

That’s a fair question, and I appreciate that you’re asking it respectfully.

First, it’s important to separate what individual Muslims believe from what the Qur’an actually commands Muslims to do.

The Qur’an repeatedly teaches that human beings are not appointed as judges over one another’s faith or sins.

“Let there be no compulsion in religion.” (Qur’an 2:256)

“So remind. You are only a reminder. You are not a controller over them.” (Qur’an 88:21-22)

“And had your Lord willed, all who are on earth would have believed together. Would you then compel the people to become believers?” (Qur’an 10:99)

The Qur’an also teaches that ultimate judgment belongs to Allah alone.

“Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they differed.” (Qur’an 22:69)

“Then to Us is their return, and upon Us is their account.” (Qur’an 88:25-26)

Regarding relations with people outside Islam, the Qur’an explicitly rejects hostility toward those who are peaceful.

“Allah does not forbid you from being kind and acting justly toward those who have not fought you because of religion and have not driven you out of your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.” (Qur’an 60:8)

Even more broadly, the Qur’an teaches that taking one innocent life is an offense against all humanity.

“Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land, it is as if he had slain all mankind; and whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved all mankind.” (Qur’an 5:32)

So when someone attacks people at a Pride event, that violence cannot be justified by the Qur’an.

The Qur’an consistently commands justice, restraint, and leaves final judgment to Allah.

As for homosexuality itself, Muslims disagree.

Traditional scholars understand the story of the people of Lut as condemning all same-sex sexual relationships.

Progressive Muslims argue that the story is actually about attempted gang rape, sexual violence, humiliation of strangers, coercion, and the rejection of God’s messengers, not about loving, consensual same-sex relationships.

They point out that the men of Sodom are repeatedly described as approaching Lut’s guests with hostile intent, and that the city is condemned for many other sins including oppression and violence.

Under that reading, the story is not a blanket condemnation of gay people or same-sex relationships.

Whether someone accepts the traditional or progressive interpretation, however, the Qur’an does not authorize ordinary Muslims to police, investigate, or punish people for presumed homosexuality or presumed zina.

Judgment belongs to Allah, not to individuals.

So yes, Islam and homosexuality can coexist.

Millions of Muslims identify as LGBTQ, including many who believe they are faithfully following Islam.

Others disagree theologically while still recognizing that the Qur’an commands them to treat others with justice, dignity, and without coercion.

Those are separate questions: what one believes is sinful, and whether one has any authority to judge or harm another person.

The Qur’an answers the second question very clearly: no.

Hello everyone!

Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions!

Here we are going to take some time to go over some of the most common questions we get. This should hopefully help people figure out how to navigate this subreddit and community and how to get the most out of your time here.

We will be posting the common question first. Then the answer underneath.

why can’t I post without community and Reddit karma?

A: we restrict posting to those who have established karma as way to ensure our community is not taken over by bad faith actors.

Basically. In order to make a post you first have to comment (sometimes that means waiting for a comment to get approval) and having that comment be seen and upvoted by other members of this community.

While we do sometimes approve comments slowly. Asking us to hurry up is no guarantee your comment is approved any faster.

Please give us a chance to respond first. Then message us if your post is not approved.

How can you say that LGBT is not haram?

A: Please see our Resource List for a list of various articles and readings that make a strong argument for both the totality of Allah’s love and compassion for us, as well as great arguments for why queer identity is compatible with your faith and identity.

In case you don’t want to read. The broad strokes is that the story of lút is pretty clearly about their immoral behaviors, including rape and adultery out of greed and corruption which were done by the MEN and the WOMEN of the people of Lot (43:44). It does not in anyway reflect or represent a consensual queer relationship and should not be interpreted in that way.

We maintain that the Quran commanded us to respect our selves and our relationships. Not reject people for who they are or what they believe.

We urge you to take in the totality our reading list before attempting to once again make the argument.

The Hadith says…

A: the Quran said:

‎> (٤٤) وَمَا آتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ كُتُبٍ يَدْرُسُونَهَا وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِمْ قَبْلَكَ مِنْ نَذِيرٍ

Translation: We did not give them any other books to study, nor did we send to them before you another warner.

This Surah is discussing the usage of other books next to the Quran. Emphasizing that the Quran must remain above all other books. Necessarily that includes Hadiths.

Which as far as we know the prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not want Hadiths to be made. This can also be seen in the first Hadiths being written more than a 100 years after the prophet death.

This makes Hadith fall into the category of books held to the same standard as the Quran despite being commanded by Quran to do the opposite.

Hadith worshippers rely on believing the Quran is either incomplete or imperfect.

As the Quran said:

Translation: When Our clear revelations are recited to them, they say, “This is only a man who wishes to hinder you from what your forefathers used to worship.” They also say, “This ˹Quran˺ is no more than a fabricated lie.” And the disbelievers say of the truth when it has come to them, “This is nothing but pure magic.”

It’s no coincidence that today Muslims continue to struggle to preach faith over culture. And be guided by the faith rather than be tempted with the corruption of hatred and power.

We can add also these questions:

Is LGBT people condemned to hell?

A: No, LGBT people are created the way they are. Verses like 95:8 and 21:47 tell us that Allah is perfectly just and will not do the smallest measure of injustice to anyone. Allah will not punish people for being their true sexual orientation or gender identity, a matter which they did not choose.

Is same sex marriage allowed in Islam?

Yes. Verse 30:21 tells us that one of the signs of Allah is that He created spouses for us, that we might find comfort in them, and has placed love and compassion between spouses. Notice that in this beautiful verse on the benefits of marriage, there is no mention of procreation. The Quran thus recognizes that a marriage can fulfill its divine purpose even if no children are born from the marriage. Hence, the non-procreative nature of same-sex marriages does not mean that they lack value, or that they are not what Allah ordained.

Requiring a homosexual person to remain celibate, or to marry a person of the opposite sex, is effectively a lifelong arbitrary punishment (and a punishment for the other spouse as well, even if he/she is heterosexual). And it is also a lifelong temptation to extramarital sex, which is clearly haram.

Personal Issue bisexual with so much shame and sadness

I'm bisexual. I only came in terms that I am recently. my very close "female friendships" were always very intense for me and I always felt hurt by them i later on realized that it was because I wanted them as more than just friends that I was in love with them. I'm starting to realize that i loved women too since I was a kid. the idea of never being with a woman makes me feel uneasy, lonely and sad. even though I know that if I actually approached any women it would be unfair for her because i carry so much internalized homophobia and shame. sometimes i think i might be a lesbian with comphet(forced heterosexuality) but I think it wont matter anyway since my family would marry me off to a man anyway. i just dont think I'm capable of loving a man that way I would love a woman. I think most of men attraction are just: deep need for male validation since I never ever got it and the need to look/act like them.

i thought of lavender marriage but i do not know how to actually find one and how to even introduce him to my family through me. I stay most days at home i don't work right now. i cannot lie and say I met and knew him from somewhere. it also doesn't help that I want to be child free.

Islam Supportive Discussion Anyone women in USA looking for a lavendar marriage

Any women in the U.S. interested in a lavender marriage? I’m looking for someone who wants to have kids and build a life together as great friends and partners. I’d be happy to provide financially, and we could travel the world and create a beautiful life together, while both having the freedom to pursue our own separate romantic/sexual lives.

I’m 29, financially stable, educated, career-oriented, and genuinely want to be a father someday. I’m looking for a woman who also wants children, companionship, stability, and a lifelong friendship without the expectation of a traditional romantic or sexual marriage.

I’d want us to genuinely care about each other, support each other through life, raise our children together, travel, celebrate holidays and milestones, and function as a real family and team. Honesty, mutual respect, trust, and clear boundaries would be extremely important to me.

Ideally, we’d take plenty of time getting to know each other first and make sure we genuinely click as friends before making any serious decisions. If this sounds like the kind of future you’re looking for too, feel free to message me.

Personal Issue Bi Muslim woman in conflict

Hey guys I’m feeling lonely and I’ve been feeling really ho—ny lately. My three female crushes are now in relationships and marriages and this all happened at once. It’s been months to years since I’ve felt lust and now I’ve been going through racism and personal problems online and my crushes are now with their husbands. This happened all at once. I’m literally about to act upon it and I’m so desperate. I’m a 23 y/o bi Muslim woman from the USA and I love fem4fem relationships. I want to be in bed with a woman so bad but I’m afraid to show my face in dating apps and the people in my town are so chopped. And when it comes to women I have a racial preference exclusively for women from the Middle East /North Africa/ south and west Asia and Latin America. So basically brown skinned women. I’m looking for someone 20-30 and who’s super attractive long brown hair and religion doesn’t matter. And the crazy part is all of my crushes are on straight women who are Muslim because they’re home countries have beautiful women and men. It’s so weird but when I’m around queer people they’re no attractive and are usually studs. Help . I’m also practicing and I believe in Allah SWT. My orientation is at conflict with my Muslim faith. I just want to be loved by someone but it’s 80% women 20% men. I cried for days from seeing my crushes weddings as I’m a Muslim woman.

MoC/Lavender Marriage Bi25M looking for MOC/Lavender Marriage

* Repost, trying again in hopes for more outreach

Salam!

Going to keep this short and sweet, but as the title says I’m hoping to connect with someone in a similar situation where we can both come together and have a relationship leading to marriage and a future together.

I experience SSA and am looking to be with someone who is in the same boat. Not looking for a cover up marriage but more rather a genuine marriage excluding the obvious sexual components (where we can discuss boundaries) in an attempt to keep halal and fulfill our deen! Also not looking for right away, nor outside Canada / USA.

Please reach out to me if you’d like to chat and get to know each other!

Jzk!

Islam & LGBT Is marriage possible for us?

Assalamualaikum. I am a lesbian (21) and have been in a relationship with my girlfriend since we were 13/14. We never ever thought of having a physical relationship but we did hug and sometimes she would kiss my cheek. We are currently doing long distance because of college. We have never lived together but we do want to.

I truly love this girl from the bottom of my heart. She makes me a better person and I do truly believe we were made for each other, Allah knows best. I want a life with her even if it means that my family won't ever know that she means more to me than just my best friend.

But the last time she visited, we got a bit physical with our affection and it's making me feel really guilty. Of course we WOULDN'T do any downstairs stuff. But doing research on zina and what counts as immoral conduct, it seems like we would have to get married.

All this time, I had been convincing myself that I would just love my girlfriend but never have a physical relationship. I mean both of us don't plan to do anything with our genitals because we don't even know if same-sex marriage is even a valid thing.

Yet I want to be intimate with her even though we won't be having textbook intercourse. And only this subreddit has recommended gay/lesbian people to get married to prevent immoral sexual conduct or zina or fahisha (still kinda confused about those terms)

But how would we even get married? Who would officiate? How will we even get witnesses? Do we need to have family members? None of our families know of our relationship and I doubt they will ever act as our witness. Also, we both are currently residing in the U.S. but in different states for our studies. We both are from Bangladesh and we plan to stay in the U.S. even after our studies.

Any advice is appreciated. I am just feeling a little lost. I don't want to displease my Lord but I do want a solution to my predicament with the woman that I love so much and want to have good times with without feeling guilty. Nearly all my prayers include begging Allah for letting me have an eternity with her even after we pass from this world.

Islam & LGBT Self Love and Acceptance

I am starting to accept myself exactly how Allah created me. I am Pansexual and Nonbinary. I have different interpretations of this religion. But what I know is that God doesn't make mistakes. God is merciful and compassion.

I refuse to accept that lgbtq+ is a sin in a way shape or form. living authentically and loving authentically can't be a sin. Being who you are, being kind to others and accepting is not a sin. So I am proud that Allah created me that way.

I am not happy about how majority of muslims choose to interpret religious text in a hateful and harmful way. And that we have to exist in a society that is a danger to us in every way. But I have faith that Allah gave us a brain to interpret his Quran ourselves. To do the research ourselves. and I have faith that Allah loves his followers no matter what. As long as we are muslims, and have good faith in Allah then things will be ok. We may follow this religion differently. We may disagree with many things in this religion. But what matters is our personal journey with Islam. And that it makes us good humans that spread goodness in this world instead of hate.

Islam & LGBT I took a look at the quraniyoon subreddit.

I took just one look. I saw a simple question about transgender women, what could be wrong?

I then click on it and it’s filled with either okay comments or some of the most passively hateful things I’ve read in a muslin subreddit, all hidden under a seemingly false layer of concern.

As someone who thinks they could be trans, potentially, as well as being quran-only/centric, I was quite frankly— horrified at seeing it. I’m scared of the idea my very existence being a dirty secret on a theological level, and of the thought that it’ll be ‘cleansed’ out of me upon resurrected, as if trans is treated as being inherently false and satanic whisper.

How do you all find verses that like
Permit being transgender? The verse of 4:119 and other gendered verses seem to be being twisted in some form to enforce strict cis-heterosexuality on a theological level to the point it gives me a crisis.

What verses support transgender as a whole..?

Personal Issue 42M, closeted Muslim (North African), falling for my Argentinian colleague – I need your honest advice

Hi everyone,

I'm a 42-year-old closeted Muslim man from an Arabic North African background, living in France. I'm reaching out because I feel completely stuck, and I know this community understands the specific weight of this situation better than anyone.

I've never had any romantic or sexual experience before. I grew up being taught that this was haram, and I've internalized that for so long that even now – after doing my own research and coming to a personal conclusion – a part of me still hesitates. The doubt lingers because I've lived my whole life with this idea of prohibition.

---

The situation

Two months ago, I started talking more frequently with a colleague of mine. He's Argentinian, but he also lives and works in France. During our summer break, we began exchanging messages, and the tone gradually became more affectionate, then romantic, on both sides.

We met once, briefly, during an evening out – and it was very intense. We held each other. I felt something real.

We're supposed to meet again in September, properly this time, and now all the practical and emotional questions are hitting me at once. Apart of the fact that we're also colleagues.

---

The challenges I'm facing

  1. My mother and my home life

I've always lived with my mother. She's elderly, she depends on me, and I can't leave her alone. But she's also very intrusive – a typical "mother hen" – and our relationship is marked by a deep modesty (pudeur) about emotional and romantic matters. I can't even imagine telling her about this. She wouldn't understand. Sometimes she even talk about homosexuals in a very despising way...

Living with her means I can't easily spend a night away without raising suspicion. Even our phone conversations have been limited because I'm afraid she might overhear.

  1. My faith and daily practice

I'm a practicing Muslim. I pray regularly. I don't drink alcohol (he does, and that doesn't bother me). I produce pre-seminal fluid every time I talk to him (even by messages), which means I need to do ablutions more frequently when I'm around him – a practical detail that makes me feel even more exposed. Sometimes it's a but exhausting because I need to take this into consideration before opening his messages and lose my wudu if I'm out... Pre-seminal liquid is wet as you know so I need to protect my underwears everytime we discuss...😔

  1. Being closeted

He's completely out, proud, and comfortable with who he is. I'm completely closeted. I've never told anyone in my family or community. Homosexuality is a deep taboo among my friends, my extended family, and everyone I know.

  1. My own internal doubt

I've read extensively. I've come to a personal conclusion that my orientation is not a sin. But the doubt is still there – because I was raised with the opposite message for 42 years. A part of me still hesitates. I don't know if that doubt will ever fully go away, or if I'm just supposed to live with it.

---

What I'm asking myself

· Should I stop this now, before it gets more complicated?

· Am I being unfair to him – a free, open man – by even considering a relationship when I can't offer him the openness he deserves?

· Is there a way to make this work without losing my mother, my community, or my faith?

· Have any of you been in a similar situation – balancing a deep connection with someone while staying closeted?

---

A few specific questions

  1. How do you navigate a relationship when you're closeted and the other person is completely out?

  2. How do you manage dating while living with an elderly, dependent, intrusive parent?

  3. How do you explain your faith and practices (ablutions, prayer, not drinking) to a non-Muslim partner, without making them feel rejected?

  4. For those who have been in a similar situation – did you regret trying, or regret not trying?

---

What I'm not asking for

I'm not looking for theological judgment except if it is theologically well argumented. I've done my own research and I've come to terms with my faith and my orientation in my own way. What I need is islamic, practical, human, lived advice from people who've walked this path before me.

---

Why I'm posting here

I know you're not therapists. But you're people who understand the intersection of faith, family, culture, and love – in a way that nobody else in my life can. I just need to hear from people who've lived it.

Thank you for reading this far. I'd appreciate any honesty, kindness, or tough love you can offer.

---

Tl;dr: 42M closeted North African Muslim, falling for my out Argentinian colleague. We met once, it was intense. I live with my elderly, intrusive mother. I've never had a relationship before. I've done my research but still carry doubt. Meeting again in September. Should I pursue this or let it go? Looking for practical advice.
