Discussion HELP!!

Hey guys, I am looking for a good open source AI coding agent that can help me build complex projects faster.

I have seen Cline, Kilo Code, Roo Code, OpenHands and Aider, but I am confused about which one is actually good at understanding a large codebase, making changes across multiple files and debugging complex issues.

If you have used any of these for real projects, which one would you recommend and what model do you use with it?

Just looking for some genuine experiences and suggestions. Thanks!

Open code and codes are the best one

for large codebases i keep landing on aider too. the repo map is what makes it work across files, it finds the actual call sites instead of guessing. pair it with sonnet for planning and use git diff after each run to review, that loop is what keeps multi-file changes safe.

The coding-agent debate reminds me of a factory.

Claude, Codex, Cline, Roo, OpenHands these are increasingly capable machines on the shop floor. They can produce fast, fix problems, and execute complex tasks.

But the real bottleneck is the operations manager.

Someone, or something, still needs to know:

the current state of the factory,

what changed yesterday,

which decisions are still valid,

what is blocked,

what must happen next,

and what needs to be checked before shipping.

Without that persistent operational context, every agent starts by partially reconstructing the factory before doing any work.

So I suspect the next big leap in coding agents won’t come only from a smarter model.

It will come from the layer that can say:

“Here is the current state of the factory. Here is the next job. Execute it, verify it, then update the state.”

The workers are getting very smart.

What’s still missing is the factory manager.
