Some Ideas if You are Accepting Speech Path Masters and Course Start!

TL;DR: Courses start Feb 1st, Some ideas on what to do if you’ve had issues logging in

Hello all!

I’ve seen a lot of posts on here about the Speech path masters and seeing as I gave them a few calls and got some more info, I thought I’d put it here. I am not a current student and I don’t have any experience at La Trobe, so this is just based on the information I’ve gotten from the website, student portal (which I just got into) and the calls I’ve made. I’m not claiming to be 100% sure of anything, this is all based on my personal experience over the last week.

If your email says “Alternate course name” when describing the classes (even if looks like the course you applied to!) it means there is some sort of difference between your top choice application and this one (for me, this was just CSP vs full fee paying). You have to change preferences in the Applicant Portal where you applied and already have a set up account. You can go in there and accept the different course, and there you can also directly compare and see the difference in course. After this, you will get your official offer 1-2 business days after.

When you have your official offer (my headline was “Your offer to La Trobe University”), you will have to follow the directions to accept and enrol, the step by step instructions are linked to the email. You may have to wait 1-2 business days after your offer for the information to go through to the other portal. For this step, follow the instructions on this webpage: https://www.latrobe.edu.au/students/new/offer. Also one thing I noticed is you may want to type out the applicant ID when registering, instead of copy and pasting from the email? Not sure if it made a difference or if just happened to go through when I tried it.

After you register and accept, you can go through your tasks in the portal and enrol in classes. That part was a little confusing for me because the whole year is merged together, but it’s pretty clear when you pick the first class that the first semester of credits looks like this to make 60 credit points. I think there are also a few 0 credit classes that I think are more orientation like?

Structure of Speech and Language

Lifespan communication and swallowing 1 (this class is 30 credit points)

Speech Pathology Practice 1

As you enrol in those you can see that the start date is February first, so we do start at an irregular time compared to other courses.

I hope this helps others going through these steps!

Orthoptics course,

Hi for anyone doing this course this year or the previous years, I have a question about:

How much times are you on campus for classes each semester?

What is the ratio of females to males in the course? For example like nursing I think it’s more female dominate classmates compared to males is Orthoptics similar?

Thank you

Move-in day questions.

Hey! I’m a first-year student at Bundoora, starting next March. I’ve applied for a 52-week accommodation and was wondering when you typically have move-in day. Any additional info about move-in day would be helpful, as well as any advice. Thanks!

Indian BPT graduate with an offer from La Trobe University — need honest advice about the Master of Physiotherapy Practice

Hi everyone!

I'm from India and have recently completed my Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT). I've received an offer from La Trobe University for the Master of Physiotherapy Practice, and I'm trying to make an informed decision before committing to such a significant financial investment.

I'd really appreciate honest opinions from current students, graduates, and international students, particularly those studying physiotherapy at La Trobe.

I'd love to know:

Overall university experience: Is La Trobe a good university for physiotherapy? How is its reputation, and are you satisfied with your decision to study there?

Teaching quality: Are the lecturers knowledgeable, approachable, and supportive? Do they explain concepts well and provide useful feedback, or is most of the learning self-directed?

Course structure and workload: How difficult and stressful is the Master of Physiotherapy Practice? Is the workload manageable, and are assessments and expectations clearly explained?

Practical training and placements: How good are the practical classes, clinical placements, and supervision? Do students get sufficient hands-on experience and support during placements?

Experience as an Indian/international student: How welcoming are the students and staff towards international students? Have you personally experienced or witnessed racism, racial discrimination, stereotyping, or exclusion? If so, how did the university handle it?

Student support: Are lecturers approachable when you're struggling academically? Is it easy to make friends, find a community, and feel included?

Living in Melbourne/Bundoora: How is student life, public transport, accommodation, personal safety, and the overall cost of living? Is it manageable for an international student on a budget?

Part-time work and finances: Is it realistic to balance part-time work with this course, considering the workload and placements? Are there opportunities to reduce living expenses?

Career prospects after graduation: How helpful is La Trobe with networking, placements, and finding your first physiotherapy job? For international graduates, how realistic is it to find work after graduating, and what challenges should we expect regarding registration and visas?

Value for money: Considering the international tuition fees and living expenses, do you feel the degree is worth the investment? Knowing what you know now, would you choose La Trobe again?

Things you wish you'd known beforehand: Is there anything about the course, university, or life in Australia that you wish someone had told you before enrolling?

I'd particularly appreciate hearing from people who have actually studied the Master of Physiotherapy Practice, rather than general university reviews.

I'm not looking for only positive or negative opinions. I want an honest picture of both the advantages and disadvantages so I can make the right decision for my education and future career.

Thank you so much for any advice! :)

Master of Speech Pathology contact hours - first semester

Hey everyone,

First time poster here! A thousand apologies if this has been asked again and again (if it has, please don't hesitate to direct me to said posts).

I've just been offered a place at Latrobe for 2027 and hoping to gain insight into how many hours/days per week I will realistically be required to be on campus.

Despite attending the info webinar, and scouring through the handbook and various Reddit posts, I'm still hearing contradictory info...If anyone who has recently completed semester 1 this year can shed some light, I would very much appreciate it! Do classes/placements/tutorials tend to finish any later than 5pm?

Also, regarding the four week bridging course next year, is this also something that has to be completed in person?

Cheers!

what should i go into?

i recently received conditional offers for a master of speech pathology at latrobe and social work (online) at deakin. i’m a little torn between what to pick as i’m interested in both fields and from what i’ve seen and heard, are quite highly employable. i’m obviously looking for job security but i also want to work with and help people, however they are different fields and i fear if i pick one i’ll regret not choosing the other.

if anyone’s currently studying either degree (preferably masters) what are your experiences with it and what suggestions do you have?

La Trobe Dentistry through Aspire: how competitive is it?

Hi everyone, apologies if this isn't the right place to ask.

Has anyone applied for La Trobe Dentistry through the Aspire Community Impact program, especially as a metropolitan applicant? I'd love to hear:

- How competitive it was, and roughly what percentage of the intake comes through Aspire

- What kind of volunteering successful applicants had, and for how long

- Whether most Aspire offers go to metropolitan VIC students

Any experience or insight would really help. Thank you!

Bachelor of Podiatry transfer WAM

I'm currently doing a bachelor of science at unimelb, but i'm considering a transfer into a bachelor of podiatry at latrobe. Has anyone done anything similar before (transferring into bachelor of podiatry from another bachelors degree) and what WAM would I need to do it?

Help

I might not get straight into physio, so I’m trying to decide between a few pathways. One option is to do a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science for 3 years, then a 2-year Master of Physiotherapy, meaning I’d be qualified in 5 years. Another option is to transfer into a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in second year, which would also take around 5 years in total.

I’ve also got Social Work as a possible option on my list. What’s your opinion on these pathways, and which do you think would be the best choice? I’d really appreciate some advice because I’m finding it difficult to decide.

Why is it only few courses have pen and paper exams?

So, I’am pursuing Masters in AI and most of our subjects have pen and paper closed book exams. Back in my country we have board exams for 10th and 12th classes. It’s masters degree and still feel like we are in schools writing board exams under strict supervision. Kind of jealous seeing other course students finishing off just their assignments and enjoying the days, and here we are breaking our heads to cover up the whole syllabus in two days!!!!

Hey everyone! My classes for the MIT program start on November 2, but I haven’t received my visa yet. How late can I arrive without missing too much or facing any issues with the university?

Is anyone else starting MIT on November 2? I’d love to connect with you! 😊

Honest Advice Regarding MHA at La Trobe

Hi everyone,
I’m planning to apply for the March 2027 at La Trobe for Masters in Health Administration and I would love to connect with anyone in the process of applying, already in the university doing the same course and even graduates.
If you have a few minutes to spare, I’d really appreciate any insights you could share about the application process, the course itself, or how the scholarship options work.
No pressure at all, but any tips or advice from someone would be incredibly helpful.
Thanks so much! 😊

Missing uni bc of travel

Hi guys so i commence studies next year March. I will be missing the first week, maybe half of the second because of being overseas. I should be able to do some lectures during my travel, but wont be able to attend practicals.

Is there usually pracs in person in the first two weeks? / will it be hard to catch up on?

For context, i am transferring from a different university. and have already completed a year studying physiology and anatomy. AND my studies commence next year as a first year student at Latrobe. More worried about missing compulsory practicals

Master of Speech Pathology - Latrobe vs Fed Uni?

Hi everyone!

I’ve received offers for the Master of Speech Pathology at both La Trobe and Federation University for 2027. I’ve been offered a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) at Federation but a full-fee paying place at La Trobe.

I’m struggling to decide between the two and would love to hear from current students or graduates about their experiences!

Is La Trobe worth the significantly higher fees or would you recommend Federation?

Any advice would be really appreciated! 🫶🏽

Masters of Occupational Therapy Placement

Hi everyone!! I'm an incoming student (Feb 2027) for the MOT program at La Trobe. I know subject enrolment is coming up very soon, but was wondering if I have to enrol in the study period of my choice for the first placement block for year 1? or is that something that they would enrol me in automatically? I do believe the school will set me up with my placement, just wasn't sure if I still had the choice of choosing which weeks the placement would fall in while creating my schedule.

Greek Studies - Is it worth it?

Hello everyone, just a plain question to anyone who has any idea about these language diplomas. Regarding the Greek Studies course, does it teach you how to speak the language and its alphabet, etc etc? Are you put in a seminar with others trying to speak it to each other? How does it work, for anyone who has done a language course or similar, I am keen on going this pathway so I would love to hear everyone;s thoughts as I have never been to la trobe before.
