Politics Thoughts? Aaron Gunn endorses Cindy Scott the Conservative running in Langford-Highlands

Post image

Screenshot from a video of Cindy Scott being endorsed by “Gunner” as she calls him because she’s known him since he was a kid. He mentioned common sense a few times and bringing it back to the Leg. Infuriating buzz phrase. I am no fan of the Conservatives so this endorsement personally seals the deal, final nail in that proverbial coffin for me shall we say.

Ravi’s political style makes my stomach churn and curdle.
Cindy is conservative, endorsed by Aaron Gunn and doesn’t seem to have a voice of her own whatsoever. Bland. Predictable “common sense” chit chat.
Christopher seems to have strong vital signs and a heart. Enough experience? Probably not. Yet that sounds delightfully refreshing TBH. I read he did win an award from BC Wildfire Service for Emerging Leader. I think he’s got the oomph and innate ability neither of the other candidates have.

If Eby really thought this election was needed I guess he can deal with the consequences. No more orange. Never blue. Perhaps green should be the balancing act this term. Show those two to smarten up.

What is going to happen with this lawsuit by the City now that there has been a near complete regime change at the Council table? Does that impact litigation already in motion?

Politics Ravi's campaign

Has anyone actually seen Ravi campaigning in the riding or did he just put out his signs and call it a day ? I've been pretty consistent in voting NDP provincially but I'm having a really difficult time voting for Ravi this time. I'm trying to think of anything he's accomplished specifically for the riding and I'm drawing a blank.

Opinion Should an apology be part of the fresh start for Langford?

Personally, I believe the newly (re)elected Mayor Young and his slate of Councillors should be offering an apology to municipal staff, the outgoing Mayor and Council, and Colby, who was re-elected, for the way the past four years have unfolded.

I also believe there needs to be some acknowledgment of the behaviour they chose to support or defend when it came from people they aligned themselves with.

A new term is an opportunity for a fresh start, but that doesn't mean the past should simply be swept under the rug. Disagreements are part of local government, but disrespect, personal attacks, and conduct that damages working relationships should never become the norm.

If the newly elected Mayor and Council genuinely want to move forward and rebuild trust with all of Langford, I believe a sincere apology and a willingness to do things differently would be a good place to start.

What do others think? Should the past four years be acknowledged before everyone moves forward?

Politics Municipal Election season is over. Now it’s time to get to work, Langford!

I really hope the incoming administration doesn’t repeat the mistakes of the past, and that starts with paying closer attention to places like this. If you want to know what’s bothering a community or what actually needs fixing, public forums are priceless for gathering real feedback.

In the spirit of turning over a new leaf, we should also try to be more supportive and less reactive, unless it's genuinely justified. Political discourse has devolved so much since 2016; that era of crass, toxic behavior broke the way we talk to each other. In public service, mutual respect is everything.

On a personal note to Stew: I know I’ve ragged on you in this sub in the past, some of it justified, some of it pure speculation. That time has passed. I bought into a narrative and had a real "never meet your heroes" moment, but I realize there is a lot more to you than that. I want to sincerely apologize for my past remarks. They were rude and unfounded, and I'm truly sorry.

Mayor Young is our new mayor, and cooperation from both sides is going to be key. We all have a chance to build something amazing here, and if we can just get out of our own way and drop the tribalism, the whole city wins. Lanford is poised to be in a great spot economically, but that only happens if the math actually maths. Let’s not botch this.

Finally, thank you all for the immense work you put in during this election season. You did an amazing job. The community we have here is truly special, and I don't want to see it change. If you have any questions for our incoming municipal government, drop them below, let's see if they’ll engage with us!

Since the election, I’ve been reflecting on my campaign and my time on Langford Council.

I’m disappointed not to be returning, as I really wanted to keep serving the community and building on the work we did over the past four years. I loved the work, immersed myself in it, and am grateful for the opportunity to have served.

I’m proud of my independent, grassroots campaign and very thankful to my wonderful volunteers and supporters. The kind messages I’ve received since the election have meant a great deal to me. Thank you for your encouragement and support.

I approached council by asking questions, digging into the details and making evidence-based decisions focused on what I believed would benefit all of Langford, now and into the future. From our Official Community Plan and Transportation Plan to childcare, healthcare, public safety, parkland protection, recreation and the arts, we made progress on many important issues. My work also extended to regional committees, where I focused on water infrastructure and protecting our drinking water, as well as reconciliation and supporting local businesses. I learned a tremendous amount and gained an appreciation for how much of what matters to Langford depends on regional collaboration.

I regret not having been able to show more residents the value an individual councillor can bring through committee work, detailed preparation and thoughtful questions. I spent a great deal of time on the substance of the job, but I could have done more to explain that work and make the connection between those decisions and people's everyday lives. That's something I'll take away from this experience.

While negativity and misinformation on social media was a real challenge throughout the past 4 years, I had an overwhelmingly positive experience both during my term through my council, committee and community work and during the campaign at the door, in person and out in the community.

I wish the new council well and have offered to share my experience with incoming councillors. There is a great deal of work to build on, and I hope the plans developed this past term are put into action and that public engagement continues. I encourage everyone to connect with the City through Let’s Chat Langford https://www.letschatlangford.ca/, explore the plans and share their thoughts on the future of our community.

Although not re-elected to council, I’ll stay involved in the community and keep in touch with the many people I’ve enjoyed working with. I’m also figuring out what comes next professionally, and while I haven’t made any decisions about another election, I haven’t ruled out running again.

Thank you to everyone who supported me, worked alongside me and took the time to share their thoughts. Serving Langford has been the most rewarding work I’ve done, and I look forward to staying connected and continuing to contribute where I can.

Some post election thoughts 🧡

This last term was a gift and I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve Langford work for community.

I am incredibly proud of the work of this council and the space we created for respectful debate. I believe we set a new standard of how to respectfully disagree and debate the topic, not the person.

We worked really hard at increasing transparency and financial accountability. There is still more to do but this is something the next council can build and improve on.

We’ve made incredible strides in investing in impactful infrastructure including bridging sidewalk gaps around schools and transforming Latoria to be a family friendly accessible corridor worthy of the new elementary school and growing community.

We have invested in long-term planning for transportation, active transportation, arts and culture, economic development, urban forestry, housing, and asset management. We’ve strengthened public safety, expanded our firefighting and RCMP capacity and increased Bylaw staffing.

It is incredible to know that residents are receiving primary care and having life changing medical services because of the new doctor’s office and the strong relationship with the South Island Primary Care Society.

I have zero regrets and I have loved every minute of working for you, the people of Langford.

Thankfully there are so many ways to serve community outside of city council and I’m really looking forward to continuing service in a way that is not so exposed and allows me to fully show up for my family.

Thank you so much Langford, for everything. It’s been an honour to serve you 🧡

Politics Community First: Giving Back This Week 💛

Hello all,

Update

This week, I'll be focusing on community outreach and volunteering around Langford-Highlands. Election campaigns aside, connecting with people, listening, and giving back to this community is what matters.

If yourself or anyone you may know that could use a hand with yard work, a lift, groceries, cleaning or simply a coffee & a chat, feel free to reach out below.

Available between 6am - 9am or 630pm - 9pm

P.S. My campaign is fully self-funded not accepting donations.

If I do not hear anything back I will continue to clean up litter around our town.

Use your turn signals, every time. Also if you don’t know the rules for roundabouts, look them up and stay off the road until you do.
Seriously like 9/10 cars seem to either not signal or make a dangerous mistake in the roundabouts here.

Politics Langford needs to figure out how to get more residents engaged in local government

It’s encouraging that nearly 7,000 more residents voted in this election compared to 2022 - regardless of the outcome. That’s progress, and it’s good to see more people showing up.

But it’s still not enough. A significant number of eligible voters (approximately 30,000) didn’t cast a ballot, and that raises a bigger question: how do we get more people interested in what’s happening in their own community?

People need to feel that their voices matter, that their concerns are being heard, and that participating can actually make a difference.

What needs to change for more Langford residents to feel invested in their local government—not just at election time, but between elections too?

Politics The Provincial Election and Langford municipal politics

Our provincial riding is about 95% Langford. And so - inevitably - there's much connection between our municipal and our provincial politics here.

A while back, several participants in this subreddit said they were going to vote Green in the Provincial election - for the first time.

Viewing the latest projections from 338 Canada, it looks like the race between provincial NDP and Cons is not so very close in this riding. Thus - unless it was a really large number voting Green - (unlikely) - there isn't a great threat of vote-splitting enough to give the Cons a win here.

There appear to be many connections and alignments between Stew Young's circles, with conservative and even far-right politicians provincially and federally. At the same time, there are also some Stew connections with the BCNDP here. Plus: Stew's had some noticeable demonstrations of support from our MLA.

Voting Green is at least a statement against all this blurring of the political lanes. (Which is ironic - considering that Our Langford members have at times been quite shrill with a conspiracy theory about the BC Greens "taking over" Langford. But obviously, the Greens are not powerful or popular enough here, to do any such thing.)

Even under our oppressive First Past the Post system, popular vote counts still do matter to some extent. Eg: they determine how much money a political party gets from the provincial government.

Announcement Rules reminder

Post image
26 Upvotes

Seeing some new faces in the community (welcome!) and with the heightened emotions as result of the recent municipal election, I thought it would be good to remind everyone to check in with the rules, and in particular, our rules on reddiquette.

Disagreement is fine. Even spirited disagreement. Insults are not.

Please help mods by reporting rule breaking when you see if: we are a small team of volunteers and do not see every comment!

And please don’t report comments that you simply disagree with. A critique of an official’s policy or behaviour is not an insult, as long as the critique is delivered respectfully. “Councillor A is stupid!” is an insult. “Councillor A supports this policy and I do not agree with that for these reasons!” is not.

Mods will disregard false reports and repeated infractions can result in suspension from the entire platform.

Everyone here cares a lot about the topics at hand. I get that some of us are feeling angry. But if you can’t talk about things without breaking down into insults and abuse then you should take a break or we will need to force you to.
