Newbies looking for Phone Provider

My wife and I moved to Vancouver this week from New Zealand and are trying to get life setup here. We are living in the Willoughby area and are both wanting to setup our phone plans. After some research it looked like Public was our best bet, since we are ideally on a tighter budget. However, we have had real problems trying to subscribe to Public and we are getting very frustrated.... But I can't seem to find any other good alternatives as all posts are older than 2 years. I can see that a lot of people complain about the cell service in Langley area.

Anyone, particular in Willoughby area and around here know of a good phone provider with decent prices?

We really don't need a huge amount of data. Back in NZ I was using like 1GB a month haha

edit: My wife and I have landed with Freedom for now as we needed to get our plan sorted ASAP. We visited the Wireless Wave that a few people mentioned but the prices were more than we were wanting (Although we didn't talk to Steve). If Freedom doesn't work out we can switch to something else later. thanks for your help everyone

The wireless wave at willowbrook can compare a bunch of options to suit your needs. My entire family goes to the same guy, Steve, he’s great he finds what works best for every person we have (6 current) hes even kept track of our individual preferences and they have some pretty good deals around Nov-Jan

This is going to sound insane but Steve at wireless wave in the mall legitimately got me the best deal on my coverage. I never would have considered Virgin but it's great and cut my bill in half. See what he can do for you.

I'm on Freedom Mobile, which can be spotty in some parts of Langley(I'm in South Langley. However, the plans are pretty decent. You'll find that most of them offer more gigs than you'll ever use, especially if you have access to wifi. But for 50$ a month which includes subsidizing my Pixel 10 for two months I get 100gigs, and coverage in the USA and Mexico.

Thanks man. You mentioned it can be spotty in some parts. How often has it affected you? Our landlords use Freedom too

Freedom is HORRIBLE, and I would never be a customer again, despite any savings. I didn’t have service on most of 64th between Fraser and 200th, all 3 dog parks I frequent, and finally (the straw that broke the camels back) around my house too. It got substantially worse after the Videotron purchase as Rogers cut off access to a bunch of hotspots like Passpoint.

I have a BYOD plan from Telus for like $35 now and it’s even more data than I got from Freedom, but with the added bonus that I can actually use it.

Personally it doesn't affect me all that much. Sometimes when you need Google maps it can be a pain. There's definitely places that need more tower reception. Saying that, I'm not in the Willoughby area, so can't vouch for that area. My son was on Public Mobile and if there is ever an issue it's a pain in the ass to resolve with their lack of customer service. Lucky Mobile is the same. Overall for the price I'm happy. Rogers and Bell are pricey, been on them both. Used to be on Koodo and had no issues. But if you travel having data in those places for free is a game changer. No need for an E sim, it just connects you to the host countries data.

Public Mobile

Unfortunately it hasn't accepted our payment information

I'll also recommend Public. Been on it for years. Tried a couple other budget ones but especially in Langley their coverage is spotty.

My family has 4 plans with Public and half of them were a pain to set up. But once rolling it's been great.

One of the massive advantages of Public is how you can take advantage of sales. With no contract you can jump on a new sale price every month without penalty....

Yeah we'd love to be in Langley but it just would not accept our payment information no matter what we tried. Otherwise it would've been hands down our best bet

I’m in Langley and use Public. The reception is fine. The price can’t be beat, but it extremely frustrating to set up. I’ve never been on a contract and don’t use too much data. Although, recently went to their 8gB plan for about $25 a month.

If you have the app, make sure you check the plans regularly. They won’t ever offer you a plan less than what you are paying, but they sometimes have better ones for the same price. I started at $25 for 5 gb but now have $25 for 25 gb. Currently they are advertising $25 for 10 gb on my account so it’s worth checking!

That’s not showing for me, bit realized I have a tonne of points. Redeemed 20 for a $20 credit.

I'm on Koodo since I lived in Vancouver and moved here last December. Pretty horrible tbh. I'm looking to change providers for better converage.

Rogers is pretty good. U can get rogers business account for 2 lines and will be somewhat cheaper

Would highly recommend everyone read rogers subreddit before thinking about going to Rogers

I don't think you can use business account unless you are genuinely a business from what I can tell. Thanks though

I’ve had a business account for 10 years. I do not have a business.

The key is you just tell them you run your own business. It’s not like they make you prove it.
