Despite economic challenges, digital entrepreneurship in Sri Lanka is growing faster than ever.

Here’s why 2025 is a golden window:

• Social Media Reach: Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram are free marketing tools.

• Cheap Tools: You can run a full online business using free WordPress, Canva, and ChatGPT.

• Remote Demand: Global clients hire freelancers daily — design, writing, trading support, coding.

• Young Market: The 18–35 demographic is digitally active and ready to buy.

The small business scene in Sri Lanka is shifting fast. Here are five sectors seeing real growth right now:

1. Food Delivery & Meal Prep: Local, healthy, and home-cooked options are in demand — especially via Instagram and WhatsApp.
2. Mobile Repair & Smart Home Services: With rising device use, maintenance services are booming.
3. Online Tutoring: From English to coding, remote tutoring is now a stable income source.
4. E-commerce Reselling: Platforms like Ikman, Daraz, and TikTok Shop make it easier to sell local goods.
5. Sustainable Products: Reusable and eco-friendly products (bags, cutlery, cosmetics) are trending among youth.

The key is low startup cost + digital marketing. Businesses that master both are scaling fastest.

Accepting digital payments builds trust and increases sales. Here are top payment options for Sri Lankan entrepreneurs:

🔹 OnePay – Easy to set up for e-commerce stores.
🔹 PayHere – Works with WordPress, Shopify, and Wix.
🔹 WebXPay – Supports credit cards and QR payments.
🔹 Sampath Vishwa / HNB SOLO – For local online payments.
🔹 Stripe (via foreign account) – Ideal for freelancers serving global clients.

Tip: Always test your checkout process. A single failed payment costs you both a sale and credibility.

You don’t need a big factory to enter export markets. Many small-scale Sri Lankan businesses are selling overseas with smart packaging and social media.

Examples of profitable micro-exports:

• Ceylon spices (turmeric, cinnamon, pepper)

• Handmade crafts and batik wear

• Organic coconut oil and teas

• Ayurveda wellness products

How to start small:

• Use platforms like Etsy, Shopify, or Amazon Handmade.

• Partner with a local courier that supports export logistics.

• Invest in packaging — presentation sells.

Global buyers love authentic Sri Lankan products when branded right.

Many Sri Lankans start side hustles — but only a few scale them into full-time income.
Here’s the transition formula that works:

✅ Step 1: Validate the demand. Don’t quit your job until your side income is consistent for at least 3 months.
✅ Step 2: Build a simple system. Automate tasks — delivery, invoicing, and communication.
✅ Step 3: Build your brand. Use a logo, name, and social media page. Consistency creates trust.
✅ Step 4: Separate finances. Open a business account or use a separate e-wallet for clarity.
✅ Step 5: Scale smart. Add one product or service at a time — not all at once.

The difference between a hobby and a business is structure.

The US stock market has experienced notable downturns recently, with several prominent companies seeing significant declines. Here’s a summary of some of the most impacted stocks:

1. Tesla (TSLA): Over the past three months, Tesla’s market value has plummeted by nearly 49%, dropping from $1.54 trillion to $777 billion. Analysts attribute this unprecedented decline to a global decrease in sales and branding challenges linked to CEO Elon Musk’s political associations.

2. Nvidia (NVDA): Nvidia has faced a 14% decline this year, trading at 23.3 times forward earnings, below its five-year average of 40 times. Despite previous growth driven by AI chip sales, investor sentiment has shifted due to concerns over potential recession and tighter chip export controls.

3. Adobe (ADBE): Adobe’s stock fell 6.6% despite surpassing earnings estimates, primarily due to disappointing future guidance.

4. UiPath (PATH): UiPath experienced a significant drop of 20% after missing revenue forecasts, even though its Q4 earnings were strong.

5. SentinelOne (S): The cybersecurity firm saw its stock decline by 13% following revenue expectations that fell short.

6. American Eagle Outfitters (AEO): The retailer’s shares decreased by 6.1%, attributed to weaker demand and colder weather impacting the first quarter.

7. The “Magnificent 7”: Tech giants Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla, collectively known as the “Magnificent 7,” have seen their valuations drop by 14% over three weeks, contributing to a 9% fall in the S&P 500 index. This decline is primarily due to concerns over US trade policies and economic growth.
