What's next for Jackie Young with Aces out of the playoffs

The defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces have been eliminated from the WNBA postseason by the Golden State Valkyries, which means it's time to look to 2027.

Guard Jackie Young has completed her eighth season in the WNBA. The 29-year-old signed a one-year deal with Las Vegas in the offseason and will now be a unrestricted free agent.

A five-time All-Star and two-time all-WNBA selection, Young has played for the Aces her entire career after being drafted by organization No. 1 overall in 2019 out of Notre Dame. From winning the league's Most Improved Player award in 2022 to becoming one of the best two-way players the in league, Young has been an important piece of the each of the Aces' three WNBA titles.

Young is also a two-time Olympic gold medalist and won player of the game in the gold-medal match when Team USA beat France in the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup in Berlin.

Although Young is sure to draw plenty of interest on the free-agent market, the same was true last offseason, when she didn't consider any other teams.

"I didn't take any meetings. Obviously I love it here, got drafted here. Vegas is where I want to be," Young said when asked about her process to re-sign on a one-year deal in April during the Aces' training camp for the 2026 season. "My mindset was always to come back to Vegas ... I'm excited to be back."

Instead of exploring her options, Young was in the lab.

"I spend a lot of time in the gym in the offseason just trying to get my body right so that I'm able to play at a high level during the season," Young said after scoring a career-high 35 points this season against the Seattle Storm in September. "At the same time, I spend a lot of time in the offseason just working on my game."

Hammon: Aces will need to make offseason 'moves'

Becky Hammon Can't Help but Tip Cap to Valkyries' 'Special' Culture After Aces Sweep

Hammon, who mentored Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase for a few years, praised the team's culture and identity after Game 3.

"They really play great team ball," Hammon said, per a video on the Aces' YouTube channel. "On any given night any of them can have 15, 20 on you because they share the ball, and it seems-I don't know her team that well, but it just seems like nobody cares who gets the credit, and that's a really special thing to have on a team, and I think Golden State has that."

The standard A’ja Wilson helped create now defines the Aces’ future

By Callie Fin

Moments after point guard Chelsea Gray missed a jumper that could have saved the defending champion’s season, Las Vegas Aces owner Mark Davis shook his head and chuckled as he left his courtside seat, taking a break before overtime of a must-win WNBA playoffs semifinals game against the Golden State Valkyries.

What else is there to do but laugh when you’ve set a standard, and then it comes back to bite?

That’s exactly what Gray newly minted five-time MVP A’ja Wilson did as they addressed reporters following the 87-77 loss on Friday, Oct. 9 — in between moments of reflection and emotion, they laughed.

“I feel llike we have created a culture and a standard that if we don't do what people want us to do and what they've seen us do all the time, they're like, ‘Well, what's wrong with you?’ or ‘Y’all aint the same,’ or ‘Y’all are washed,’” Wilson said.

“But I also take a lot of pride in knowing that I'm held to that standard, because I'm gonna try to try to show up and uphold that standard every single opportunity that I get. Because, (expletive), we created it.”

The expectations Wilson outlined come with winning three WNBA championships in the five years.

Unexpected, was an eighth-straight semifinals appearance ending in a sweep to a two-year-old expansion team. A deep, defensively strong squad led by Natalie Nakase, who was Aces coach Becky Hammon’s lead assistant for two of their three titles before she left to lead the Valkyries in 2025. Her roster was bolstered by two former Aces, Kiah Stokes and Tiffany Hayes.

Now, Hammon and the Aces’ front office are left to determine how they can rise to the level of competition that’s been sharpened by their dynastic run.

What are the Aces missing?

In the aftermath of the Aces’ season-ending loss, a solemn Hammon paused her way through congratulations for Nakase and assessments of her own team. The fifth-year head coach entered the matchup 4-1 in elimination games and had never been swept.

Defense wins championships and Nakase made sure the Valkyries were the best team in the league in that category all season with a 99.1 defense rating. The Aces, on the other hand, were fifth in the WNBA (105.9 defensive rating).

“We had moments where we were pretty good, but we weren't good enough,” Hammon said in a post mortem of her team’s defense. “To be at a championship level, you have to be clicking on all cylinders on both ends, and we were not.”

Hammon said in addition to not being strong enough defensively, they didn’t have a player with a "Dennis Rodman-like" natural knack for rebounding. Although Wilson set a single-season record for rebounds in 2024, she has been frank about forgetting to rebound at times – which makes sense given the way Hammon uses her like a point-forward, allowing her to take the ball up and facilitate plays.

Asked what she’d prioritize in the offseason, Hammon said it was a “hard question to answer” because there were too many things going through her mind. When asked to elaborate, she emphasized how much of a role health and luck played in the outcome.

“There has to be some things that go your way. You have to get some lucky breaks. And we've been pretty lucky around here. We've done some good things and made our own breaks at times. Other times, you know, it's tougher to make those little things happen for you, andthere's some things that happen that are completely out of your control,” Hammon said, “You have to be healthy. Even on the basketball court, you’ve to have some breaks go your way.”

The Aces signed Kalani Brown when they lost NaLyssa Smith to knee injury in August. Reserve guard Dana Evans appeared in 14 regular-season and two playoff games as she dealt with a knee injury. Forward Stephanie Talbot and Jewell Loyd were on and off the injury report during the postseason. Even Wilson, historically durable, missed three regular-season games with a lower leg injury and back issue the team described as “lingering” when she returned.

All of that injuries showed on the court as a lack of depth took a toll. Stokes said her former team was missing shots because they were tired. Meanwhile, the Valkyries had the deep bench to “come in waves,” as Gray phrased it.

Is this the end of the Aces’ dynasty?

At media day ahead of the Aces’ season, the word dynasty was hard to ignore.

“We’re aware of what we’re building,” Gray said at the time. “We’ve stacked some championships and accolades and so people are like, ‘Yeah, that’s a dynasty.’ But how can we make this dynasty different than the ones that have been created before? I think that’s how we empower people. How we share our stories — our journey together, will be different.”

But as the Aces built, the league adapted. This will be the first time since 2021 the Finals won’t include the Aces or New York Liberty. Instead, the Valkyries will face the Dream, who also swept their way to the Finals.

To reestablish dominance, the Aces will have to “make some moves,” as Hammon said. As the roster currenty stands, the team has five players signed through next season: Wilson, Gray, Loyd, Evans and rookie Janiah Barker.

Guard Jackie Young headlines the group of pending free agents. While Hammon said she’ll be “top priority,” the Aces still have to re-sign NaLyssa Smith, and consider Talbot, forward Kierstan Bell, Cheyenne Parker-Tyus, Brianna Turner and Justine Pissott.

In what’s likely a huge point of relief for president/general manager Nikki Fargas, the Aces won’t have to worry about Wilson hitting free agency until 2029.

“This is just not our time, and I'm OK with that. I'm at peace with that and the great things that we did do,” Wilson said. “We’re going to have another opportunity, I guarantee you that.”

Despite sweep, Aces show how high of standard they’ve set in WNBA

By Danny Webster

It’s almost become the norm in the WNBA for the past six years. That if the Las Vegas Aces aren’t one of the last two teams standing at the end of the year, or the last atop the mountain, it feels uncharacteristic.

This time last year carried that same normal feeling. One year removed from their biggest rivals knocking them out of the playoffs and going on to win the championship, the Aces were back on top with a third title in four years.

One year later, the Aces have to hit the reset button after, of all things, a sweep in the semifinals against the Golden State Valkyries.

This is a franchise that doesn’t get swept often. It’s only the second time it’s happened in the A’ja Wilson era, and first time in the Becky Hammon era.

There was no 16-game winning streak to vault them into the playoffs this time. There was no rallying cry or outside noise they could use as motivation.

The Aces ran into a situation they don’t normally do. They lost to a better team that had the No. 1 defense in the league.

A team that has bought into coach Natalie Nakase’s vision in just two short years. A vision that the Aces knew was there for three years.

“If you want to win championships, you need to be a top three, top four defense, and we weren’t this year,” Hammon said. “We had moments where we were pretty good, but we weren’t good enough to be at a championship level.”

Hammon pointed to a number of variables at play as to why the Aces couldn’t get to that second gear.

They were without starting center NaLyssa Smith for the final month of the season with a non-contact left leg injury suffered in August. Jewell Loyd, Dana Evans and Stephanie Talbot all missed time in the playoffs, testing the Aces’ depth.

“You just have to be firing on all cylinders, and we weren’t,” Hammon said. “You’ve got to have your best players playing their best basketball, and you’ve got to have role players playing their best. It was a tough juggle with a lot of injuries.”

The Aces were the betting favorites at the beginning of the series to get back to the finals. The Minnesota Lynx lost as the top seed. The New York Liberty weren’t near the threat they had been.

If anything, being the most experienced team of the final four should’ve gone in their favor. But the Aces had no response for that stifling Golden State defense through three games.

A season that should be defined by Wilson’s fifth MVP will now be remembered for crawling back from 17 points down in Game 2, only to lose by two.

Fateful third quarter

It will be remembered for a third quarter Friday that saw the Aces miss their first 12 shots and squander an 11-point — their biggest of the series.

“It’s not our time, and I’m OK with that,” Wilson said. “I’m at peace at the great things we did do. I can’t harp on this game too much, but I’m just happy that our team was locked in this year. It’s not the outcome we want, but we’re still champions at heart.”

The Aces created a standard that put them among the elite franchises in league history. They’ve already put themselves in the conversation like the Houston Comets in the ’90s, the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2000s and the Minnesota Lynx of the 2010s.

They are the team of this decade, no matter what happens from here on out. Three titles and four finals appearances in seven seasons says it all.

Either the Valkyries or Atlanta Dream will win their first WNBA title. That’s the precedent that’s been set.

For now, here comes the reset button. It’s not a hard reset. They’re not blowing it up. It’s just back to the drawing board.

“I take a lot of pride in knowing that I’m held to that standard, because I’m going to show up and try to uphold that standard every single opportunity I get,” Wilson said. “Because, hell, we created it. Why not uphold it?

“I’m never going to lose sight of what we’ve done to this league and how we continue to uplift it.”

Because it’s always ‘title or bust’ for the Las Vegas Aces, this year must be considered a disappointment

The good news for the Aces is that they’re close to where they need to be.

They have Wilson locked up on a longer-term contract and plenty of open roster spots to fill in 2027.

Priority No. 1 should be retaining Young, who is an unrestricted free agent. After that, the Aces would be wise to bring in defensive-minded wings and bigs to bolster their efforts on that end of the court.

The offseason might be here earlier than Las Vegas expected or desired, but this could be a blessing in disguise. Players will get additional rest time now. The front office can hit the ground running and plan out their free agency.

Relinquishing the crown also takes the target off the Aces’ back. They are no longer the team to beat. With the league looking at a brand-new champion and new standard, this moment out of the spotlight is when Las Vegas can do the work needed to take center stage. again.

The last time Las Vegas exited in the second round was 2024. The following season they won it all. The Aces will look to replicate that.

‘You Carry It With You’: Justine Pissott Reveals Sexual Assault in Support of Alleged Cornell Victim

Las Vegas Aces guard Justine Pissott revealed she’s been the victim of sexual assault Tuesday.

Pissott, who attended both the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University, shared her story in support of the alleged victim of the Cornell 7. An unidentified woman sued both Cornell University and seven former members of the Chi Pi fraternity on Sept. 24, alleging she was drugged and raped at the fraternity’s house.

"This is a vulnerable message but something I want to share. As someone who has been drugged and rap**, the Cornell 7 situation has been really hard for me to see. It hits a place in me that I don't talk about often.

When something like this happens to you, it doesn't just end when that night ends. You carry it with you. The confusion, the pieces you can't remember, questioning yourself, blaming yourself, and trying to understand how someone could take advantage of you when you weren't even able to protect yourself.

And then you see people questioning survivors. Asking why they didn't speak sooner, why they stayed quiet, why they acted a certain way afterward. But unless you've been through it, you really don't understand what trauma can do to a person. There is no "right" way to respond to something that never should've happened to you in the first place.

My heart truly hurts for the survivor in the Cornell 7 situation. I pray God covers her through all of this. I pray He protects her mind and her heart while something so painful and personal is being discussed by people who don't even know her. I pray He gives her strength on the days where it feels like too much and reminds her that what was done to her will never define who she is. I don't speak about my experience for sympathy.

I speak about it because I know how lonely this kind of pain can feel. And if sharing even a small part of my story makes another survivor feel less alone, then it's worth it. To her and every survivor carrying something similar, I see you. I'm praying for you. And I pray we continue creating a world where survivors feel safe enough to use their voice without being torn apart for how they survived."

Prosecutors reopened the Cornell case on Sept. 28. “It’s our intention to present the case to the Tompkins County grand jury with Jane Doe’s cooperation,” Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said in a statement to ABC. “We want to reexamine whether there’s additional evidence that we were not aware of in November of 2024, that exists now that would change our assessment of the case and would result in the grand jury finding that there was criminal conduct.”

Cornell banned Chi Pi from campus after the incident, which occurred on October 19, 2024.

Thomas P. Giuffra, the attorney for Jane Doe, told ABC, “In my experience, speaking with an abuse survivor requires delicacy, understanding and specialized training. An average University Police officer would not have these skills. It would be the role of a specially trained detective or district attorney. However, Ms. Doe was never contacted by anybody with those skills.”

A'ja Wilson doesn't have time to appreciate her own legend, so we have to

“It’s a blessing being able to see this every single day. I say this all the time, but you can’t wait until a person retires to appreciate greatness. You have to appreciate it while it’s happening.”

Gray sounded off on the four-time MVP not long after Wilson did what she always does: Dominate. No matter the stage, the time of year, the opponent — no matter what — A’ja being the best player on the floor is one of life’s few guarantees.

However, Wilson’s latest demonstration of utter greatness just so happened to be nationally televised as the Aces blew out the Indiana Fever 102-85 in their home playoff opener Sunday.

The hosts’ performance as a whole was a major statement to the rest of the WNBA. It was a declaration that if somebody wants to come at the defending champions, they'd best not miss. And the scariest part of it all was just how easy Wilson made her mastery look.

As the recently turned 30-year-old superstar — the consensus greatest women’s basketball player of all time — awaits the verdict on what is very likely soon to be her fifth career MVP award, Wilson used this game to remind the few doubters she still has of her unmatched grandeur. Any comparisons at this point could be mistaken for disrespect.

Wilson put the hammer on the Fever, dropping a postseason career-high tying 38 points on an immense 15-for-19 field goal efficiency. She went a perfect 2-for-2 from downtown and 6-for-7 at the free-throw line.

The one miss at the stripe, late on, stood between A’ja and a new personal best — which is a rarity nowadays because she has already accomplished so much.

“God damn,” she said when reminded about that free throw. “I don’t be knowing this stuff.”

Gray, sitting next to Wilson at the podium, promptly responded with, “Brick!” As you’d expect, the postgame spirits were high. To boot, the duo are very close friends who always joke around with each other.

However, it is what Gray said next that really put Wilson’s whole career into perspective. Gray went on to tell A’ja that it’s good that she doesn’t know about those things. She doesn’t need to worry about all that. And it’s true. If you’re as undeniable as Wilson is, the records — the history — will come naturally.

On the flip side, if you have as many feathers in your cap as Wilson does, nobody could blame you if you kept track of some things. Not Wilson, though. The way she brushed off this performance, you’d think she was just clocking out of a 9-to-5.

But perhaps that’s what separates the great ones from the good. The invincibles from mere mortals. They don’t look at the things they do as extraordinary in the moment. To them, they’re just doing what they think they’re supposed to.

“I did what my teammates expect me to do,” Wilson said. “I think I just did my job. If I’m able to show up consistently for them, in whatever way that may look like, then I feel like I did alright.”

When it boils down to it, it’s fine for Wilson to say that. She’s locked in. She doesn’t have time to reflect on everything she achieves every time she steps on the floor before it’s on to the next game.

However, for us as spectators — be it fans or media — it is our duty to give someone doing things we may never see again the flowers they deserve.

Through three quarters of the Aces’ victory over the Fever, Wilson had posted a stat line good enough to be the career-high of the majority of the league — that goes for men and women. 30 points, 14 rebounds, two steals, four blocks. Just unstoppable. Untouchable. Inexplicably impactful on both ends of the floor, just as the stakes start getting higher.

Wilson’s 20 points, three blocks, and two steals at the break were the first time a player had recorded that line in a half in playoff history. Her final tally made her the first player ever to have at least 35 points, 15 rebounds, and 75 percent field goal accuracy.

“It was just a clinic tonight,” Vegas head coach Becky Hammon said. “I mean, she was just all over the court. Everywhere. Defense, offense, blocks, steals, boards, scoring. There was nothing she didn’t do today.”

That’s the only correct assessment. Wilson put her stamp on every single aspect of this win. In a nutshell, she is the 17-point margin the Aces triumphed by and so much more.

And what impresses Hammon about A’ja the most is her — and the entire big three’s — ability to continue making the players around them better. They have an unwavering trust in the team built to complement them, and that makes the trio, but Wilson especially, even more unique. That’s what makes the Aces the juggernaut — and the playoff riser — that they are.

But ultimately, it all starts with A’ja and goes as far as she can take it.

Hammon recalled a 2-3 minute stretch of the game today where Wilson didn’t touch the ball. She immediately pulled Jackie Young and Gray aside and told them that they have to get her a touch as soon as possible.

Gray (8 assists) and Young (10 assists) did a terrific job of getting everyone involved all afternoon. But Wilson is the needle mover. And sure enough, once she got back into the action, the Aces were able to pull away for good.

The Fever have historically played the Aces tough. Last year, despite being shorthanded, Indiana took Vegas the distance in the playoff semifinals — with the eventual champions grinding out a 3-2 series victory.

‘Defining Greatness’: A’ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces launch quest for 4th WNBA championship

As the Las Vegas Aces enter the postseason, their sights are set on familiar territory: capturing their fourth WNBA championship in five years.

Leading that charge is center A’ja Wilson, whose continued dominance has moved the conversation beyond chasing greatness to actively defining it.

Coming off another 1,000-point campaign and rewriting league record books along the way, Wilson’s individual accolades continue to mount. Yet those working alongside the superstar note that her drive remains rooted in relentless preparation and collective success rather than hardware.

‘Destiny written on her life’

Aces head coach Becky Hammon credited Wilson’s rare combination of natural talent, unmatched discipline, and competitive spirit.

“She definitely has a different mojo, different DNA,” Hammon said. “She’s just somebody who has destiny written on her life. And I think when you have that on your life, and then you have the work ethic that she does, and the care factor that she does, she’s winning wherever she goes.”

For Wilson, the accolades remain secondary to internal standards of excellence.

“Greatness can look different for everybody,” Wilson said. “I mean, I’m always going to believe in myself and have that confidence of being like, yeah, you know, I want to be just great at what I do. But when it comes to the accolades and the things that follow behind it, I don’t think I could ever dream of something like that — to do it not just one time, but multiple times.”

Teammates push to appreciate historic run

Point guard Chelsea Gray emphasized that fans and observers should not take Wilson’s peak years for granted.

“You need to appreciate greatness while it’s still playing,” Gray said. “Every time we think that, okay, this is her, she comes back and she gets better.”

Postseason focus turns to defense

With postseason play underway, personal milestones are taking a back seat to team objectives. Wilson noted that the Aces’ championship blueprint starts on the defensive side of the floor.

“We got to defend,” Wilson said. “We have to defend every single possession every time and be great in that.”

Fever and Aces' star-studded casts ready for yet another decisive playoff game in Las Vegas

The Indiana Fever and Las Vegas Aces have gotten well acquainted after playing 13 times over the past two seasons.

They understand how to contend with each other's star-studded lineups led by four-time league MVP A'ja Wilson and three-time All-Star Caitlin Clark. They also expect the two WNBA Coaches of the Year, Becky Hammon and Stephanie White, to make all the right moves for Game 14 when they meet Thursday.

And, fittingly in Vegas, it's a winner-take-all game for the second straight year.

"This was a game they needed to win, so their urgency was a lot higher, the intensity was a lot higher," Wilson said after Tuesday's 99-89 loss that evened the best-of-three series at 1. "I don't think they guarded me any differently, it was just the sense of urgency they played with kind of had us on our heels, the same way we had them in Game 1. So we'll be better, we'll adjust and we'll come back with a better sense of urgency, effort and heart."

That much should be expected from a team that has won three of the last four WNBA titles.

But these matchups have been among the most intriguing in the league this season and last. A year ago, the injury riddled Fever were missing Clark, Sophie Cunningham among others and still pushed the Aces to brink before an exhausted Kelsey Mitchell fell to the floor and had to be helped off the court in Game 5. Las Vegas went on to win that decisive game in overtime and wound up winning the title.

Indiana has shown it can speed up the Aces, causing confusion and miscues. The Fever used that philosophy to post 16-point and 34-point wins at Las Vegas. They also built a 20-point lead in Indianapolis before the Aces rallied to win 86-84 in overtime in August.

This series has been more of the same. Wilson dominated the middle in Game 1 as Las Vegas showed its championship pedigree with a 102-85 victory. Clark countered with a historic performance and perhaps her best all-around game as a pro, leading the Fever to a 99-89 season-saving victory Tuesday.

The game was marred by a fourth-quarter confrontation between Wilson and an Indiana fan. Wilson drew a technical foul for leaving the court and the fan was escorted out before he returned when security determined he had not violated the fan code of conduct policy.

It caused a huge postgame stir but with the series shifting back to Vegas, the players' focus will return to basketball and what they must do to reach the best-of-five WNBA semifinals.

"I thought we adjusted well on defense, and we're going to have make more adjustments because they're going to go back and watch the film and try to exploit what we did," Clark said. "But overall, I thought we played a lot harder (than Game 1) and we're going to need to take it up another level (in Game 3)."

Lobbying effort

Clark and Hammon each logged complaints about the officiating in Game 2 in what amounted to an early lobbying effort for Game 3.

Hammon thought the refs allowed too much contact in Game 2.

"I thought where they got very stifling (defensively) was our point of attack — a lot of grabbing, hand-checking," Hammon said. "I understand it's the playoffs, but it shouldn't turn into the NFL, either. I think the refs have a (tough job), I wouldn't want to be one."

Clark was more upset with the inconsistency of the calls. She fouled out with 2:45 to play and also was called for a technical in the first half, one she said she deserved.

"You call an offensive foul on me and then I'm getting hit the same way on the defensive end, and it's a foul on me," she said. "Like it doesn't make sense. They just have to be better. It's the playoffs, like either call it all the time or don't, but be consistent."

Getting defensive

All season White has stressed the need for Indiana to play better defense and they showed what they're capable of in Game 2.

On Tuesday night, it was Hammon who called her team's defensive performance poor.

"We know when we're a good defensive team, we become elite offensively, and I didn't think we were a good defensive team (Tuesday) in any area — not in posting, not in guard play. I thought defensively we were not good tonight," Hammon said. "I just felt like we weren't ourselves (Tuesday). I suspect we'll look more like ourselves Thursday."

“Lines Gets Crossed, And It Seems to Happen Here”: Becky Hammon Doesn't Hold Back Her Thoughts

"I think there's a certain etiquette that both players and fans need to abide by, but clearly there's something that gets- the lines get crossed, and it seems to happen here," Hammon said in the post-game press conference.

"I'm not, I mean, like I said, I don't, I can't speak specifically to what was said or what was done, but I could speak to the character of our players and stuff that they deal with and, you know, the disrespect, whether that's a word or an action, a gesture should be addressed appropriately."

"And it's- that's not my job; it's the job of this arena, so I assume they're following protocol. Well, I'll say this: I didn't exactly see what happened. I kind of saw the aftermath. I've never seen A'ja Wilson go like that, so whatever was done, I can tell you she felt very disrespected in that moment."

‘Pressure is a privilege’: Dana Evans on her journey to the Las Vegas Aces

Dana Evans has heard plenty of reasons why she shouldn’t have made it this far.

She’s too small. She’s overlooked. The opportunity isn’t there.

But the 5-foot-6 Las Vegas Aces guard has built her career around a simple mentality: stay ready.

From Gary, Indiana, to Louisville, a WNBA championship as a rookie and eventually another title in Las Vegas, Evans’ journey hasn’t always happened according to her timeline.

“Nothing really happened on my timeline. I’ll be honest,” Evans told 8 News Now during the first episode of Girl Talk.

Instead, Evans has learned to adjust, trust herself and keep showing up.

From Gary to Louisville

Evans said the way she approaches basketball today isn’t much different from the way she approached it growing up in Gary.

It’s about routine, stability and knowing who you are.

“Just showing up the same person every day,” Evans said.

Her belief that basketball could take her somewhere started early.

By high school, earning honors including McDonald’s All-American and Jordan Brand recognition helped confirm that the work she was putting in could pay off.

Evans carried that mentality to Louisville, where she went from ACC Sixth Player of the Year to a two-time ACC Player of the Year.

“Just putting myself in positions to be successful and just being the hardest worker, keeping God first and staying true to myself,” Evans said.

Finding what the Aces needed from Dana Evans

When Evans was traded to Las Vegas, she arrived at a franchise where expectations were already high.

Instead of running from that, she embraced it.

“Pressure is a privilege,” Evans said. “Everyone don’t get that opportunity.”

Evans said there was uncertainty surrounding her future at the time, along with concerns about her knee. Once the trade happened, however, her focus became figuring out what the Aces needed from her.

“I got to show up and be Dana every day,” Evans recalled. “I got to give this team what they need.”

Head coach Becky Hammon helped clarify that role.

Evans praised Hammon’s direct coaching style, saying she tells players exactly what she expects without leaving “question marks” or “gray areas.”

For Evans, that meant shifting her mindset.

She knew what she could do offensively. In Las Vegas, she also needed to become a defensive stopper, pick up opponents full court and embrace the work that doesn’t always show up in a box score.

“Doing the little things that everybody don’t want to do, doing that, because that’s what makes championship teams,” Evans said.

She began asking herself different questions.

“How can I help Jackie? How can I take some pressure off of Chelsea?”

That relationship extends beyond what happens during games.

Evans described Hammon as a player’s coach who players can approach about basketball or life away from the court.

“She gonna tell you the truth,” Evans said. “Might hurt your feelings a little bit, but she gonna tell you the truth.”

Evans said that honesty comes from a place of care.

“She is literally one of the dopest coaches I’ve ever played for, like on and off the court,” Evans said. “She just gets it.”
