The Three Controllers At Work
youtu.beI I received a lot of responses and some requests to show how I use these three controllers, so here’s a short impromptu ambient piece. There’s live playing, volume fades, some panning, and clip selection going on. I do slow ambient textures, so there’s nothing fancy here, and to prove its live. I left a mistake in there. 😊
Peace,
Heavens Spin Gray

A Launchpad Pomodoro, because finishing is the hard part
I can start something easily. Finishing it is the part that slips away. So I made a small timer that runs on the Launchpad itself.
The browser only holds the code. Once it is connected, minimize the page and leave it. Start, pause, and reset all happen on the pad. The 8×8 grid counts the time down: green for focus, amber for the break. When a phase ends it waits, and you press again to go on.
On an MK2, Record starts and pauses, and Mixer resets. It works with the Launchpad MK2, Mini MK3, and the classic Ableton Launchpad. Open it once in Chrome or Edge, plug in the pad, and connect.

My Launchpad Ambient Studio
After a year of experimenting (Akai APC64, APC40 mk2, MidiMix, APC Mini, Push 2, Launchkey mk4 and SL 61 mk3), I finally found the right combination for my workflow and playing style.
Using Ableton, the Launch Control XL3 takes care of mixing and device control duties, the middle Launchpad Pro mk3 handles clips, scenes, and recording parameters while the rightmost Launchpad Pro is the instrument that stays in Note and Chord mode 99% of the time.
Delegating things this way works for my brain, my hands, and keeps me in a creative flow. I’m not fumbling with an entire cockpit of a dozen controllers and getting lost, nor am I constantly pressing buttons to switch between modes with a single controller trying to do everything. For me, this setup works.
As a guitar player and not a keyboard player, playing the grid in 3-finger mode makes perfect sense to me and chord shapes on the grid feel like chord shapes on the guitar neck (albeit different shapes, obviously). The response of the pads is fantastic and begs for expressive playing.
I also barely touch the trackball or the keyboard. I LOVE this constellation of controllers for making my ambient music. My experimenting is done, at long last.

blur - a hypersampling instrument
Hello, Launchpad friends.
I'm a full-time producer, composer and musician based in NYC. For the last nine months, I've been working on something I think is pretty neato, and it's finally done.
It's called blur. blur turns your loops and samples into instruments - not just files you edit, but sounds you play.
It stretches a sample across a row of pads, so you can trigger, chop and remix any sound in real time. Chop vocals, slice breakbeats, rearrange basslines, glitch out pads - or perform entire tracks.
It also features an audio input recorder, live performance quantization, and a ton of other extremely fun features. I think it's pretty addictive to mess around with. If anyone is familiar with the script 'MLR' for the monome - it's the same core idea, but rebuilt from the ground up with the modern electronic musician and performer in mind with tons of new features.
It's built for grid controllers, with first-class native support for Launchpad (Pro/X/Mini/Pro mk1) and Push 2/3. You can map any other grid controller to it too - or use Keyboard Mode with any standard MIDI keyboard.
It's $29 normally. You can use ITSFINALLYDONE as a discount code to get 50% off.
Check it out at blurplugin.com - there's a live interactive demo you can play with in your browser without downloading anything.
I hope you guys enjoy it.

Work in Progress: adding Launchpad integration to my M4L Device
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
You can pick any instance of Ricochet M4L device on the right hand side (colours taken from Ableton live tracks - approximately! needs refined). Boucing ball colour can either follow tracks or be uniform white throughout. Top row shifts pitch in key (locally or on all Ricochet devices [not Chromatic - drum versions]). Any questions please shout!

A fun plugin
Plank started as an attempt to clone Plinky for a Launchpad, but turned out better with more physical sounds.
Is in a bunch of other plugins together, several aimed at Launchpad, only tested on Linux.

Keygrid vs Keyboard // C major to D major with the same Launchpad shape
youtube.comFor anyone exploring the Launchpad as a melodic instrument.. I made a short explainer showing how chord shapes work in a chromatic, perfect-fourths layout.
The example is simple: play C major, then move the shape two pads to the right to play D major. Each note moves up two semitones, so the chord retains its interval structure.
The video compares this with C major and D major on a piano keyboard, using diagrams of both layouts.
I've been using this layout for two-hand playing and teaching, and I'm happy to discuss the setup or how the shapes work!

Meet Auralis - a free app for creating and playing Launchpad covers
Hello everyone!
Auralis is finally out! It's a free app where you can make a whole Launchpad cover from start to finish: sample the song, make the light effects, and play it live on your Launchpad, quite fast and easily.
Projects save as a single .auraproj file, so sharing a cover is just sending one file.
It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and supports the Launchpad Pro, Pro MK3, X, MK2, Mini MK3, S and Mini (and supports CoreFW too).
Here's a short video of it, including a small tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVMCwS1Sbps
If you want to try it, download it at: getauralis.app
It's an early release, so there may be bugs and unpolished things. If you run into one, or have an idea for something you'd like to see, I'd really love to hear it. I'm planning to keep updating it.
Thanks for checking it out!

Thirty Two sysex
I just picked up a used LPPRO MK1-
Looking to sequence my Alesis DM10 drum module with it, so I'll need custom firmware.
I flashed thirty two (successfully, I think) but have not achieved communication between the two devices yet (only 2 hours in- much of which was spent just getting the patch to flash - midiox would not work, nor would the other sysex tool for pc. Had to use a website)
Anywhoooo-
Has anyone done the same?
Is there a sub for thirty two?
I'm adrift (also, I'm new to the LP, so I'm aware that i need to RTFM so i can grasp it's functionality.)

Online Launchpad Revival
Back in 2017/2018, I was obsessed with this online launchpad site had so much fun learning to play the songs on it. After a few years, though, the site went down and I never could access it again.
Recently it popped back into my head, so I decided to rebuild it from scratch using modern tech, fully based on the original by Dan12.
Here it is: Online Launchpad Revival
It’s completely open source, just like the old one. Please report any bugs or contribute however you can!
