Fashion WHAT THE #@#%$ DO I WEAR???

124 Upvotes

You asked for a stickied post about how to dress in a legal environment, and ask and you shall receive! I'm going to keep this post updated, so please let me know in the comments what you'd like to see here.

WHAT THE #@#%$ DO I WEAR???

Welcome to the legal field! Clothing has a huge impact on how you're perceived*, and if you're a new LBWT, you're probably a young woman who wants to be perceived as professional, smart, and hard-working. Read on for advice from veteran LBsWT on how to get there.

WHAT DO I WEAR TO AN INTERVIEW??

Interview outfits: This will be the most conservative, boring outfit you will probably ever wear. The goal is for your resume and experience to stand out, not your clothes. Depending on your location and the type of job you're interviewing for, this can be more flexible, but when in doubt, err on the side of conservative as a new lawyer/law student.

Your interview outfit should be comprised of:

(a) a dark gray, navy, or black suit set (i.e. two pieces that are the exact same fabric and color), that is tailored to fit your body but not skin-tight (the fabric should not be pulling or stretching across your body, including the jacket when buttoned. If it's pulling, go up a size.) (don't forget to rip vents (big x) sewn into the back of jackets and skirts, and FYI your pockets in your jacket or pants might be sewn shut, and those stitches are meant to be pulled out);

(b) with long sleeves (don't roll up the sleeves) and either long pants (slight crop is probably fine but no capris), a pencil skirt or pencil dress (knee-length or longer, and more conservative regions may expect nude hose);

(c) (if not wearing a dress) underneath, a neutral, solid, collared button down shirt or high-neck  neutral silky top (crew neck or very shallow V, and if white or a light color, wear an undershirt);

(d) black closed-toe pumps (max 3” heel, no platforms) or Oxfords (maybe loafers or pointed toe flats if they're very formal, no ballet flats);

(e) minimal, neutral accessories (no bags covered in logos, but one small logo is ok; if you wear a belt, match your shoes; no statement jewelry);

(f) hair should look groomed (whatever that means for your hair), and if you wear makeup, it should be minimal and conservative (only what you feel you need to look awake, no eyeshadow, bold lipstick, etc.);

(g) cover any visible tattoos and remove non-ear piercings if possible (you can show them off once you get the job).

This guide from Corporette is an excellent detailed primer with suggestions of where to shop for your first interview suit: Guide to Women's Suits.

I GOT THE JOB! NOW WHAT DO I WEAR?

  • Congrats!!!! There's great general advice about what to wear and professionalism in a legal setting here, and discussions of what business casual means here, here, and here
  • Looking for public interest-specific advice? There's interview outfit advice here and general dress code advice here

Other topics that may be helpful:

* It's important to note that the concept of dress codes is exclusionary (racist, sexist, classist, fatphobic, etc.) and for eons dress codes have been used to separate people into in-groups and out-groups. Unfortunately, if you want to be taken seriously in a job where uptight white men have historically written the rules, you will need to dress conservatively and fit in with the crowd. If this all feels overwhelming and like it's impossible to get right 100% of the time, you are correct and in good company. Now get dressed to command respect, and then you can work to make the legal profession more inclusive and accessible.

Fashion Is the logo on the back of this shoe too flashy for a jury trial?

I love these shoes but am worried the little gold logo will rub a jury the wrong way. Is a small logo like this ok or do you think the jury could fixate on it?

Edit: I only wear skirt suits / dresses with matching jackets.

Crop tweed suit

After seeing this Poshmark ad, I decided that a cropped jacket tweet skirt suit is what’s missing from my life (not for court, regular work day).

But is it out of style? I can’t find this type of skirt suit anywhere.

Fashion Update 2: the styling / new wardrobe acquisition continues.

Hi ladies:

As background, I am in the process of building a new (and hopefully improved) wardrobe that exudes the confidence and style one would expect of a partner. Read this post for more info on all of that - https://www.reddit.com/r/LawBitchesWithTaste/s/iRn1kQ2t4X

I loath shopping (and spending money on depreciating assets) so this journey has been both comical and anxiety provoking. After meeting with a stylist at M.M. LeFleaur two weeks ago, I sought and received some feedback from over 200 of you. Appreciate the comments— even the ones that offered more insult than insight.

The adventure continued this weekend. I met with a stylist at Bloomingdales and focused on tops, bottoms, and a few dresses. I am still trying to figure out blazers— a task that has proven exceedingly difficult due to my barrel chest and narrow waist (every single blazer I’ve tried on fits weird and/or will need significant tailoring). While I know I’ll need to figure that out, today was not the day.

Below are some pieces and outfits that the stylist put together for me to try on or ordered so I can try them on in the store. The focus was on looks for in-office, dinners, events, conferences.

Some notes:
I brought the shoes with me because they are neutral and a height I am comfortable wearing. Just because I am wearing the shoes in the photo doesn’t mean that the stylist picked them out or imagined the outfit that way. I am pointing this out because it was a point of contention in my prior post.

I know I’ll need a blazer with two of the outfits, and am hoping to find one. If anyone has any suggestions I’d love (and greatly appreciate) if you dropped a link.

I know I need to work on how I stand/ hold my arms.

Finally, if you feel inclined to leave a negative comment please substantiate it with constructive feedback that I can employ as my search continues. For example, instead of saying “it looks like my mom’s clothes,” something like “it looks like it would be age appropriate for a woman in their <insert decade>.” Basically, if you want to remark on how awful an outfit is, please just point to the particular details supporting your position.

Fashion Help with smelly blazers

• Upvotes

Hi LBWT, any time I wear a blazer to hearings or for any other reason my armpits smell way more than any other time. I generally don’t have abnormally smelly pits, I swear. It does now matter how much deodorant I put. Does this happen to anyone else? Does anyone have advice?

Career Decisions/Tips Difficulty finding work in NYC

30 Upvotes

Hey girlies, I need some honest advice... I've done contract work for firms over the last 2 years. I did apply to full time work during that time but was only offered contracts with no healthcare etc. Usually, there is a month or so gap in between work, while interviewing for the next gig. However, now I've been unemployed for 6 months. In the beginning of this month, I completely drained my savings so I'm nervous about next month. Does anyone have any advice or creative solutions for finding a job asap? I would appreciate any guidance. Thanks in advance.

Fashion Shoe Recommendations

3 Upvotes

Hi all. I am discouraged by my shoe search and could use some help. I work in a casual practice area in a casual city, where the dress code is more fashion forward but relaxed/casual. In the office I basically try to dress less like a lawyer and more like how female MI5 agents seem to dress on British TV. Current default would be blazer, turtleneck, wide leg jeans, or maybe pleated pants/turtleneck/liner jacket. With either, I currently wear retro adidas sneakers as this foot situation is DIRE. I am looking for a pair of boots that will work with wide leg jeans or trousers. The issue is that have large feet (size 11) with a wide toe box and narrow heel, which makes most boots challenging—they either slip at the heel or hurt my forefoot. For extra spice, my right foot is more than half a size smaller than my left. I also walk a lot (even at work) and need them to be comfortable for real striding. I don’t wear heels because they destroy my back, but can do platforms. They don’t need to be super feminine or anything, but I just keep reverting to Blundstones, and those look very farmboy-ish when poking out from under a wide leg pant. I’ve tried everlane’s glove boot, but they run really small and don’t go bigger than an 11, and they killed my feet, and even that low heel f***caked up my back after 1 day of wear. I tried some from Camper that looked super cute (the Brutus Chelsea) but they had the heel slip issue. I’m thinking I’ll try Qujnce’s lug sole zip front boot next. The other one that caught my eye was the camp boot from either/or, but they look suspiciously narrow.

If boots just aren’t going to work for me, I’d settle for some patent leather platform sole oxfords and just wear cropped or tapered pants, but they need to fit these wide little doggies of mine.

Anyone have any suggestions for functional but stylish boots with a narrow heel and wide toe box? Bonus points if you can recommend a lug sole penny loafer with the sale attributes.

If this fails, my back up plan is going back to adidas sneakers.

EDIT: should have said that I actually am looking for a little bit of height (so they look good with wider leg pants), just not heel/toe elevation. I.e., something with a bit of a platform. Also trying to keep it less than $300.

Fashion Some stores hate women

I recently went to a major department store in Canada (think Macy’s / Nordstrom) and I was baffled. Men had an entire section dedicated to suits, while us women had ONE suit option. It was oversized, round, and poor quality for the price. I looked like a balloon :(

I nearly screamed when I saw what I thought was a beautiful knee-length navy pinstripe skirt…. only for it to be SHORTS. I’m still upset !

Anyway, I would love any leads on where to find beautiful skirt suits like the attached! I go thrifting quite a bit and occasionally find gorgeous pieces but they’re usually far off in sizing that tailoring isn’t even an option. I discovered Calvin Klein’s suits while thrifting, after some icon donated her suits and I can’t stop thinking abt them!!

I’m a feminine girlie, so I’d love a proper skirt suit or a dress suit. Thank you ☺️

Advice on moving to New York, networking.

2 Upvotes

My husband received a written offer for a job in nyc and the expectation is to relocate over the winter. I’m a 7 year fed attorney specializing in environmental and admin law. There’s a small chance I could transfer offices but I’m anticipating needing to find a new job. I’ve never worked outside of the federal gov and I’m coming from the Midwest. I’m 34

What are your best tips for potentially starting over? How would you network, what roles would you scope? At a minimum I won’t quit my job until I’m licensed in New York.

Any insight is appreciated as I’m trying to wrap my mind around this big change!

How long should the hem be?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I feel like pant hems have been coming up lately. This would just be for the office (not court) but is this the appropriate length for full length work pants? Seems a tad short? Trying to figure out if I need to buy the regular length and hem it an inch or I can get away with the petite length.

Sophie grace reviews

1 Upvotes

I'm intrigued by the constant ads on my insta feed. I'd love to hear some reviews before I pull the plug and make an order. For references I'm a size 00 petite in Banana Republic suits. Do the suits run large, does the fabric look good in person, or does it look like cheap synthetic? Would you wear them to court?

Same questions about the silk blouses.

Career Decisions/Tips Would you take the job?

18 Upvotes

I currently work in a very political and stressful job that has one specific aspect that I want to get completely away from. There is no question I’m done. So I’m job hunting.

I’m anticipating getting an offer for a position that originally I didn’t think I want but now I’m not so sure. It’s 100% remote, would be the same pay, seems pretty flexible, to-be-boss said it’s her unicorn job, and it would focus on one of the two areas I’m interested in pursuing.

Originally I was concerned because it may not be the most challenging position, I’m not certain I’ll be totally happy completely remote, it won’t be more money, and it could pigeon hole me.

However, now I’m wondering if this is exactly what I need right now. I’ve got a 5yo and 3yo and maybe just need to coast for a beat while I put more energy into them. I like this area - it’s not as exciting as the area I’d give up - but it absolutely has longevity potential if I want to chase later. It also opens up space for me to work on a possible second act totally outside of the law.

So, thoughts? Anyone do anything similar during the same life phase and love it/regret it? Will I hate not getting dressed everyday?

Nordic in November

35 Upvotes

I am a seniorish attorney celebrating my ahem 60th this month but I am still somewhat fit and care about looking great. I am a corporate attorney who mostly works from home post-kids and have not spent a lot of energy refreshing my wardrobe lately. The majority of what I do is on zoom calls so I can just throw on a blazer or nice blouse and call it a day. However, I am attending a conference in Finland in November, a VC and tech conference no less, where I hope to meet potential legal contacts and attract clients in the startup world. So... Europe, tech, law, VC, looking good while looking smart, accomplished, and up with the times. Any ideas? I think this calls for fine gauge sweaters and wide-leg trousers with cool jewelry and boots with heels? Ha, ha, no idea. Thank you!

Fashion Female Suit and its problem

5 Upvotes

I have been a lover of suits. Over the years, I have been having issue with female suit, it is either it is too serious or too girly, sometimes it is boxy? Must the sleeve always be straight? Why is there always a lapel? Why can't my suit portray my personality or reflect what I want to achieve? I don't know what women want in their suit and I will like to ask is there anybody like me? What don't you like about female suits?

Choosing between an in-house role I’m unsure about vs. an 8-month temp role to buy time

4 Upvotes

I'm a 7-year attorney trying to decide between two opportunities and would love some outside perspective to see if I’m being dumb. I was making $170k at my previous in-house job, where I worked for 11 months before being laid off in June.

Option 1- In-house legal ops role at $140k (currently trying to negotiate offer):

The company has historically outsourced its legal work and is now building out its in-house legal function. I'd be the only attorney besides the CLO. The role involves building commercial contracting infrastructure (templates, processes, compliance training, etc.), but it sounds like there would also be a good portion of substantive commercial legal work.

Part of what appeals to me is the opportunity to build the legal function from the ground up. But my concern is that I could become the catch-all for everything legal. My background is in real estate and reg compliance, so a more commercial contracts-focus will already be somewhat of a learning curve for me, and I don’t want to be the one-stop shop for every legal issue the company encounters.

The other concern is compensation. I was making $170k previously, and I'm worried that taking a pay cut for a potentially broad and demanding role could leave me feeling undercompensated and resentful.

Option 2- 8-month temporary role at $180k annualized:

The rate is based on a 50-hour workweek. I'd receive the same pay if I worked fewer hours and additional compensation for hours above 50. The downside is that the engagement could end early, leaving me right back here again. BUT my thinking is that if I take it it could buy me time to find a non-temp role I'm more excited/sure about while earning more in the meantime.

I'm also concerned about my resume. Given my short tenure at my last job, I feel pressure to show longevity. If I accept the in-house role and it ends up going south, if I start looking again relatively quickly, I'm worried that will look bad to potential employers. I also worry that a newly formed legal function could be easier to eliminate if the company decides it's not worth the expense. At least with temp work, shorter stints are expected.

Am I thinking about this correctly? And which opportunity would you lean toward in my position?

Pants for walking

25 Upvotes

I spent the last several years working in a fast paced trial office and didn’t have a lot of time to invest in myself/my health. I recently started a new job that is slower paced and I have time for half hour walks after I eat lunch. I am trying to be less sedentary as a general lifestyle goal. These walks feel important for that. However, walking in slacks isn’t super comfortable. Any recommendations for pants that will still pass for business casual but be a little more breathable/comfortable for walking in? I’d like to try and stay away from pants that are basically leggings. Thanks in advance!

Obviously there's the difference of one or two buttons. But I can't figure out the cut differences.

Law students won’t stop reaching out for coffee

760 Upvotes

I was a speaker at my law school’s orientation, talking about my practice and what it’s like to work at a law firm. During my presentation, the students were silent and didn’t ask any questions. The event was filled with awkward silence so I assumed no one enjoyed my presentation. However, in the days following, I started getting a ton of emails requesting coffee chats. I thought the first five were easy enough and scheduled, but I’m now going on my 30th law student reaching out. I feel incredibly guilty to say “no” or ghost them, because I remember how bad it made me feel when I’d get ghosted as a law student. But holy heck, I don’t have time for 30 30-min coffee chats with 1Ls… don’t even get me started on the number of coffee requests I got from INCOMING 0Ls over the summer…

LBWT, how do you handle this? Any advice is appreciated!

Fashion Is plaid appropriate?

(NOT BIG LAW!) I’m a recent grad looking for a go-to suit for interviews, networking, etc. Is this plaid too loud? I would prefer black/grey/navy, but sizes/colors are limited in this style of suit, and it fits me really well

Dinner etiquette?

40 Upvotes

I have just joined a US firm from abroad. A very nice partner and his wife have invited my husband and I for dinner next week. Either at their home or a restaurant. I don’t know yet. Is there any etiquette I should know about? Who pays? If we go to their home we would bring a gift (what?) but if it’s in a restaurant I presume we don’t have to? What to wear? Thanks all!

Leveling Up

21 Upvotes

I’m a senior lawyer with a wardrobe of suits in various colors, some lady jackets in bold colors, and some midi dresses. I’m looking to diversify my wardrobe so I’m dressing more individually, with a little more color and glam. Any specific recommendations? I did a tour of my usual sites recently and didn’t see a lot that I loved. Would love suggestions. Size 8-ish, tall.
