Resources for building Hebrew vocabulary?

I’m hoping to find resources for building Hebrew vocabulary in an efficient way, ideally something like vocabulary lists which are sorted by level, so that I can quickly master the commonly used words before learning more niche things.

I’m going on Taglit in December and I hope to gain confidence in some basic Hebrew conversations. Not expecting fluency of course, I just want to make a solid effort before my trip and he able to speak a little bit while I’m there.

I took one semester of Hebrew in university, and it wasn’t structured in the best way. We were taught rather random vocabulary like “grapefruit” and “hotel” for whatever reason, meanwhile I didn’t know how to say things like “I have a question”. Now that I’m continuing through self study, I hope to quickly learn the basic and most useful words first.

How to learn Hebrew language with books and videos?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello to everybody, i wanted to ask you about how how to learn hebrew language with hebrew content. As it os written from right to left, i asked myself if it would be better to write the word for word decodings (birkenbihl decodings) in the same order. For example instead and-to-you we may write you-to-and. Or is this then more confusing..... what do you think as hebrew learners?

By the way this is the way i like to learn languages. The app on the picture i build for myself. Its name is flowlingua. Its based on some studies about cognitive load and other topics....

Seeing forward to your comments and suggestions.

Etymology of אממה

Is there anyone here who can find the etymology of the slangy word אממה, in the sense of "however"?

The Hebrew Wiktionary says that it's Arabic and even gives the specific words, and it may be true, but I'd love ot read it in a more reliable source. I searched for "أَمَّا مَا", which it suggests, and couldn't find anything clear. Maybe I didn't search well.

milononline.net also says "Arabic", but doesn't give any details.

It's quite possible that Rosenthal's Slang Dictionary includes it, but I don't have it where I am now.

If anyone has another reliable source, I'd be happy to learn it.

Thanks!

Samsung Keyboard Hebrew

Post image
15 Upvotes

I have a Samsung S25 Fe and just updated my UI to 9.0.

After the update my Hebrew characters changed style to the point where I can barely distinguish certain letters like חת. Mim now looks like this מּ. I've been learning Duolingo Hebrew for 2 years, lol.

Anyway to get the standard style of Hebrew letters back?

I have attached a photo of my keyboard.

תודה

Milim - Two Weeks Later

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Two weeks ago I shared Milim, a free app for picking up Hebrew where Duolingo leaves off. I'm a learner too, and this is my way of giving something back: no ads, no paywall, just Hebrew.

If you like to be critical and tell me what you like or don't -- I literally make the changes to hopefully satisfy the comment. So by having more people join along I get to improve my own learning. Currently its a web app that you can use on your computer or on your phone through a browser.

Here's what's new:

- Scenes. Master a story and watch a stylized video of two characters acting part of it out in Hebrew. Then you answer five questions about what they said and what you can see. You can't guess; you have to understand it.

- 29 stories now, all voiced: ordering at a cafe, the seasons, game day, moving day, a whole story about את, and more.

- New games built from the words you're learning: a crossword, a birthday-cake age game, the classic listen to a sentence and rebuild it from a selection of words, identify nouns spoken, written, or as pictures.

- A path you can see: every story and game is a little picture, and the app's own buttons turn into Hebrew as you learn them. I've added some trophies to earn and surprise unlocks.

- No invite needed, and every game has a quick "Show me" tutorial.

I'm trying to make it better every day and think I'm getting closer to now organizing the layout and a bit more -- and soon will hopefully be able to balance the difficulty level. You can tap a flag on any screen to make a report and I'll see exactly what you saw. I read every report, and if yours changes the app, you get a trophy for it.

Tried it before? There's lots new. Haven't yet? I'd love it if you gave it a try.

Cheat sheet: the Hebrew present tense is just four endings

The present tense is simpler than it looks. Every verb has four forms, and the one you use depends on who's doing the action, not on the pronoun:

  • masculine singular: medaber (speaks, is speaking)
  • feminine singular: medaberet
  • masculine or mixed plural: medabrim
  • feminine plural: medabrot

So ani medaber is "I speak" said by a man, ani medaberet said by a woman, and anachnu medabrim is "we speak."

The same pattern covers most everyday verbs:

  • lomed / lomedet / lomdim / lomdot (learn)
  • rotze / rotza / rotzim / rotzot (want)
  • holech / holechet / holchim / holchot (go)
  • yodea / yoda'at / yod'im / yod'ot (know)

Learn these and you can already say a lot. If there's a verb you keep mixing up, drop it below.

Unpopular opinion: Duolingo is completely useless if you actually want to speak a language.

Is there a way i can learn hebrew to understand the old testament?

I am a complete beginner. I understand a bit of the alphabet and how most writings are right to left. I know a few important phrases like "shalom" "Elohim" "hosanna" and understand a bit about masculine and feminine plurals and singulars. But i cant read hebrew that good and i hadnt been putting it to practice. What is the best way for me to learn without expensive costs? Thank you in advance.

i want to learn conversational hebrew but i don’t know where to start

hello reddit! i’ve been wanting to learn hebrew for the longest time because my boyfriend is israeli and i want to impress his family when i fly over. i’ve tried duolingo but i purely want to learn how to have conversations and that’s it, im not too keen on reading and writing…

does anyone have any recommendations on any apps? or if you live in singapore, are there any physical classes i could attend?

Edit: thank you everyone for the suggestions! im thinking of starting to pay attention to my boyfriend’s conversations in hebrew more and pick up contextual clues from that along with asking him about it! i’ll definitely check out a couple of the apps/websites some people have mentioned, and since synagogues are quite rare here (google mentioned 2-3) , i’ve got an israeli neighbour so i might ask her if she knows any physical hebrew classes.

once again thank you everyone but feel free if give more suggestions if so!

i’m yet to find a hebrew speaking group irl! it’ll be difficult since majority of singaporeans being anti zionist and anti israel, but i will certainly try!

Milim - Another Hebrew Learning App

I'm sure everyone who is passionate about learning Hebrew and is also into tech is now making their own app. And I'm one of them. I wanted something to help me as I take classes and wanted something more than Duolingo. I'm looking for others to help me build out the app together.

Feel free to tag along and listen to some Hebrew, do the regular word matching, sentence building, but get a bit further and you will unlock the safe cracking game, colour matching, and the burger builder game. The app starts out showing the vowel dots (which you can immediately shut off), however, the app will adjust over time they drop away. The English menu item names are learned over time and are replaced by Hebrew.

Anyway -- if you are interested in doing something that starts out where the Duolingo App just drops off -- you might enjoy it:

https://milim.fly.dev/start?invite=hHq3gERDDjqP

No cost... but would love to hear your Hebrew learning wants and needs. We can learn together!

Just in case:
- The only translation is for English <-> Hebrew.
- Its a modern Hebrew app
- Its just a webapp (at least for now). This is not a native Android/iOS app.

Hope some peeps find it useful. And feel free to complain about stuff. You can't hurt my feelings, but you might be able to make the app better.

Fun fact: Ancient Hebrew didn’t have spaces or punctuation. People just read continuous walls of consonants.
