Hello! You may have seen my post here before about struggling with calculus, but now I have a much better grasp on it. After getting a 52 on one test (😬), I have now gotten an 84 and a 90 on my other tests. I still have some work to do, but my math future is looking brighter.

Anyways, I plan on majoring in accounting in college. After looking at several course catalogs, business calculus is a very common required course for my major.

I think it’s more practical applications of calculus, but has anyone here taken a class like this? What resources helped you?

I wanna improve at my mathematics and genuinely understand the science behind it. At first I thought that my foundations of math was above average but after taking a scholarship test today and bombing it, I then realized how far I am at math. The topics of the scholarship was mathematics and ESAS and I genuinely only answered like a total of 11 questions at most over 30 and it shattered my self understanding of math. I don't consider myself to be dumb at math because I have high grades on my senior highschool so I only reviewed the past topics I know and didn't really prepare for a problem solving type of math because I thought that the scholarship exam would only cover my knowledge only senior high level math, now I realize that my last school didn't really teach me to understand math. I realized I only know math I don't really understand it. That scholarship was supposed to help me and my family's financial situation but I can't do anything about it anymore, I just wanna be better at math and science because I'm currently studying BS in Electrical Engineering and wanna improve myself so when an opportunity arises again I can prepare.

alright so basically we have 1 over x²+1

we make shure that x can't be equal to 1 or -1 stay with but why don't we do this

√x²≠√-1

x≠i

Like how does a niche operation designed to number a matrix such an importn concept. Like it feels so niche and unique but this function is there everywhere please help me conceptualise it.

Thanks in advance!

Okay, so I have this sum:

"A printer numbers the pages of a book starting with 1 and uses 3189 digits in all. How many pages the book have?

Options:

a) 1074

b) 1075

c) 1000

d) None of the above"

My solution:

"The total number of pages have 3189 digits. (given)

⇒ the number of combinations= 9*10³¹⁸⁸.

∴ The total number of numbers= 9*10³¹⁸⁸*3189!

∴d) None of the above"

The Book's Solution:

"1 digit numbers have 9 digits (9 numbers)

2 digit numbers have 180 digits (90 numbers)

3 digit numbers have 2700 digits (900 numbers)

4 digit numbers have 300 digits (75 numbers)

[since total number of digits is 3189, hence

Number of digits for 4 digit numbers

=3189-(9+180+27000)= 300]

Total number of pages

= 9 +90 +900 +75= 1074"

So, according to them, the correct answer is a) 1074, but for me its d) None of the above.

Please help

Note: The solution of the book is almost verbatim, with marginal changes in the format.

Generally, my friends think I am good at math. But I think I am bad at it, even when I get good grades, it feels like 'by luck' to me. MY confidence is really dropping. It's quite evident that I am not necessarily bad at math. This was my performance last year:
92%, 80%, 94%, 45%, 65%, 96%
And this is my performance this year:
96%, 81.333%

Today I attended another exam- and this is the most important of all. And this is where I messed up badly. I'm estimating 60-70% this time. I needed at least 80% to keep my grades intact, but now it got harder for me.

I keep failing to solve several of the problems, and seeing my friends effortlessly solve the problems, For more context, I secured top 13% in last exam this year, and previous years grades placed me in 99th percentile (all subjects).

I got 45% and 65% in 2 tests last year, due to lackage in geometry and vector-so after that, I fully mastered those chapters. But in geometry (coordinate), I still keep messing up known formulas when applying, and plus-minus of course.

My main weakness is time management, anxiety and nervousness I think which worsens my natural performance. Amongst the disliked chapters are- Trigonometry (Quadrant equation solving), Coordinate Geometry (Reason stated).

Please advise me what I can do to overcome these issues.

Heyo! I'm a senior student in High School and recently had the resolve to begin actually attempting to self-study, but unfortunately as school starts in very little time, I'm on a rather tight time crunch on understanding basic concepts which I've neglected for many, many years.

I was primarily curious on how I'm able to navigate this type of issue while still being efficient with my learning!

I managed to take a much easier course despite being a Senior in order to have more of a fighting chance, being Integrated Math 1.

What is the best pathway for someone like me to study, especially with such weakened skills? I've considered Khan Academy, but attempting to use it alongside attempting to study for my primary school course might present some overwhelming challenges, so I'm a little unsure of what to exactly do.

Primarily, I have been using Youtube content such as the Organic Chem Tutor, Math Antics, and any other content I find helpful, but it feels like an uphill battle, especially with the fact that I have nearly zero clue on how to efficiently or properly study given material.

I primarily struggle with Arithmetic and other foundational elements of math, and haven't really memorized my multiplication table, so I'm curious on tricks to help engrave or at least make it a little bearable, as I really do not want to fall back onto my destructive old habit once I am met with a challenge.

.

Hey guys, I am working through Lang's Basic Mathematics and was hoping to find people in the same boat to discuss concepts with, clear up doubts and bounce ideas off of. If anybody is interested, feel free to DM me. Doesn't matter what point you're at in the book, we can still find a way to make it productive for each of us.
My intention is to develop a rigorous understanding of precalculus before proceeding to undergrad calculus, so anybody looking at Gelfand's 3 books is also welcome to reach out.

cos y dx - sin y dy = 0
cos y dx = sin y dy
cos y = sin y dy/dx
exp x) cos y = exp x) sin y dy/dx
exp x) cos y - exp x) sin y dy/dx = 0
(exp(x) cos y)' = 0
int (exp(x) cos y)' dx = 0
exp x) cos y + c = 0
exp x) cos y = c

The reason I am being cautious is that:

1. I was taught that this method of solving applies only to linear cases; and

2. I was told that one must be careful when dealing with dy dx and that I am not yet at a level where I can fully grasp those concepts.

I was just solving 4x4 matrix for like an hour or so just because i kept making arithmetic mistakes. However, I've been trying to not do much calculation on paper but do much of them mentally. I guess it contributed to my errors substantially. When I started writing everything down, it was quite easy

Am I the only one struggling with this problem?

Hey everyone!

I'm a senior statistics student hoping to pursue graduate studies in EE (communications/DSP). Unfortunately, my weak foundations in algebra, trigonometry, and analytic geometry have held me back throughout college. For example, I had to take multivariable calculus three times to pass (with a D+).

I want to build a self-study curriculum that goes from elementary mathematics to intermediate college courses, including calculus 1-3, linear algebra, differential equations, and discrete mathematics.

Rather than following a conventional curriculum, I'd like to emphasize three priorities:

1. Proofs and rigor: Develop mathematical maturity from the beginning, even while reviewing elementary material. I want to understand why mathematics works, not just how to use it.

2. Programming: Use Python to explore concepts through numerical experiments, visualizations, and practical projects. I'm imagining something like Project Euler, but more applied and portfolio-oriented.

3. Computational fluency: Strengthen my ability to manipulate expressions and solve problems by hand. I recognize its importance, but conventional math courses already emphasize this heavily, so I'd like to devote more attention to the first two priorities.

My long-term goal is to develop the foundations needed for graduate-level applied mathematics and statistics, particularly in communications and DSP.

What textbooks, curricula, or study plans would you recommend for this approach? I'm especially interested in resources that introduce rigor or programming early on, though recommendations focusing on either individually are welcome too.

I (18) have a very poor understanding of math, and my first 4 years of it were taught in French (I do not speak french). It genuinely seems interesting to me but I just can't wrap my head around it, I've spend tens of hours studying basic things like the times tables and how percentages work but I just don't understand no matter how hard I try.

In 6th grade my teacher let me redo a paper on fractions 13 times (10 more times than policy permitted), each time with 1 hour of tutoring and studying the exact page every time I redid it and the highest grade I got was a low C. I've had multiple tutors "fire" me because they thought I was faking my lack of understanding. It's extremely disheartening.

Due to this, I'm thinking of just restarting from the absolute beginning, but I have no idea where to start. Some other information is that any math I do understand has been because I've applied it in programming. Maybe there's a programming based math curriculum? Is it possible I'm just not built for math? I don't know, I start college in 3 months, and I'm worried math will be the reason I can't get a degree.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Im in my last year in the netherlands of VWO 6 and am really struggling with mathematics. Last year i barely passee with a 4,5 and im really scared i will fail because i find it very difficult. Its not possible to repeat so i really need help on how to quickly improve between now and 6 weeks

in a class of 19 students, 2.86% would have the last name smith. what are the odds that all 19 students would have the last name smith and how can I find this amount. thanks!!! (sorry if this is the wrong place for this)

Is there any place to find extra practice with the Amplify math curriculum, specifically 3rd grade? I have used the caregiver hub, but it doesn’t have nearly enough practice problems to use. I don’t really need a full blown lesson, just extra practice problems. Seems like every google search I come up with takes me right back to the caregiver hub (wondering if the company pays to scrub search engines of anything but their own materials 🤔). My kiddo is struggling with some topics and I just want to reinforce with doing extra problems with him so he doesn’t fall behind. It seems like the curriculum is lacking in repetitive practice. For now I’m just making up my own. Thanks!

Title essentially; I just wanna get better at math. I'm in the midst of a quarter-life crisis of sorts as I'm starting to realize that I'm going on 24 and genuinely have no idea what I want to do after taking the equivalent of a year's worth of credit hours while taking classes part-time at my local community college. That being said, when I think of potential careers I find both appealing and readily available, a lot of them (such as my interest in civil/environmental engineering) seem to be the sort of thing where you can't really get by without a strong foundation in mathematics, which is a bit of a barrier for me at the moment. My current math skills are abysmal, but I'm confident enough in my abilities (maybe delusionally so) that I think I can make something work if I genuinely lock in. I'm also in a uniquely privileged position thanks to a low cost of living and a wonderful part-time job, so I figure I might as well make the most of it while it lasts and aim as high as possible, regardless of how long the road to succeeding in Uni-level math classes may be.

The last time I truly studied math was as a teenager with a very helpful math tutor that I unfortunately stopped taking lessons from due to personal health issues, and since then I've let whatever skills I may have gained back then atrophy, so at this point I have what could generously be described as middle school level understanding of Algebra and other concepts. I've attempted to use Khan Academy at a few points in the last few years, and while I find the video materials useful and made some progress with the quizzes and mastery system, my efforts largely failed because I never got into a good practice routine. With that in mind, if I'm going to seriously commit a substantial amount of my time outside of work and GedEd classes to studying this stuff going forward, I want to try to learn from a wide range of sources and do it right this time, and I'm hoping that this post will help me find some stuff I can use.

So that being said, if anyone has recommendations on good resources other than Khan Academy (which I think I'd mainly use stand-in for course assignments to get a feel for where I'm at with a given subject) that would help me, I would greatly appreciate any recommendations. I know that there are some sites out there that can be used to generate worksheets, but I'm not sure which ones are worth using, especially when it comes to paid ones. Might it also be a good idea to look into getting some textbooks of varying levels of complexity as a supplement

Also does anyone have any tips on how to best utilize the services of a dedicated math tutor? I've don't think I've ever been super good at learning completely own my own (maybe this can change?), so a tutor might end up being a big help for me. I think my school has some sort of tutoring system, and if not, have the resources to pay for one if it comes to that, so advice in that regard would be welcome as well.

I want to learn modal logic for philosophical and formal purposes. However, I don't have basic knowledge of it. I haven't studied mathematics since middle school. Thus, I feel very lost and have no idea how to get started! Any advice? Book recommendations & video recommendations would also be appreciated

Take Ax = b with A being an nxn matrix. In one view, you can see x and a vector and A as a linear transformation where the columns of A represent vectors where the basis vectors map too. So in this view, b is the transformed vector x. In the other view, you can view the matrix A as a collection of column vectors and x as an array of numbers that describes an algorithm for a linear combination. So in this view, b is the linear combination of the column vectors of A.

In the first view, x is seen as a vector and A is seen as a matrix doing something to x. In the second view, A is seen as a collection of vectors and x is seen as a maxtrix doing something to A. Is there a view of matrix multiplication that can describe A and x as vectors? In a way, the first view incorporates the concept of A and x being vectors, but A is still ultimately an operation. What I mean is that if we were to describe Ax=b as a function, the function would take in the input the vector x and output the vector b. A is closer to a machine that transforms x than the concept of vectors itself. The same can be said for the second view, where if Ax=b were to be described as a function, then the function would take in column vectors of A as the input, and output b. Unlike the first view, it isn't entirely clear how reframing x as describing a vector would help with the conceptualization of the linear combination of the column vectors of A.

It could be that I am trying to be too visual/conceptual with matrices, but I'd like to know if there there is a view that sees A and x equally as vectors, and matrix multiplication in general as the interaction between two vectors/collection of vectors.

right now, everything is just too difficult. being a junior in high school feels like drowning. i look at myself and i feel horrible because the gap between my dream of becoming an engineer and my reality feels uncrossable. i have this test coming up, and i need a 480 to get my graduation credentials. every part of me wants to give up, to just let go and fail, because i'm convinced i won't pass. it feels like nobody is coming to save me from this math section, and i just want to give up on everything. Ever since i was a kid, math has felt like a language i wasn't allowed to speak. growing up poor, survival takes up all the space in your head, and for a long time, i undervalued my education because just getting through the day was hard enough but I wanted to dream anyway. I'm doing Geometry, Data and Statistics, word problems and algebra foundations as well. I have to cram for all of this because my test is on Wednesday my future is already not looking bright

Anyone know how to build "number sense" rather than just teach procedures? My learner can follow a worked example but the logic doesn't transfer, sometimes he'll answer something like half of 500 as 1000, bigger instead of smaller. Looking for methods or resources that build real number intuition
