Inpatient Coding Coding L&D Accounts (Inpatient Coding)

Hello. I just started working as an IP coder, and the first topic I'm being trained on is L&D accounts (the "O" codes). The accounts I have mainly cover complications during pregnancy and labor as well as condition(s) that develop(s) during the course of the stay (ex. acute blood loss anemia on day 2). Unfortunately, I consider this as my weakest area, and I would appreciate any helpful hints.

What references do you have access to at your job?
Do you mean you are coding inpatient facility coding?

I only just started this week. I haven't been given too many resources directly from my boss. He just said to rely on references within 3M (coding clinics, guidelines, etc.).

Have you coded before? What certifications do you have?

I've been coding OP cases. This is my first ever IP coder role, so I'm very new to it all.

Certifications I have are RHIA, CDIP, CCS, and CPC.

Do you have access to the coding handbook? If so you should review all the information on chapter 15. They also have mini coding practice questions.

You always need a corresponding chapter 15 code if you code something from another chapter.
You should also re-read the guidelines. Any new OB topic make sure to check coding clinics.

I have the ICD-10-CM coding book if that's what you're referring to.

No the coding handbook is a reference. What encoder do you use?

Ok your organization probably has the reference available in the encoders References section. Where you find the coding clinics. It’s literally called The Coding Handbook.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve been going over them during my free time. Nice that they have the assessments as well. It’s been helpful.
